The Plainfield Library may be able to help you. I have heard good things about the help people get from the Minooka Library. I live at the opposite corner of the county, so I don't have much going on down there : )

I am specifically researching in the Na-Au-Say area of Kendall county and the Plainfield area of Will county. My Vandervoort/Tubbs family moved there about 1847. I recently moved to western Illinois and I am not quite familiar with the geography of the area yet. Thanks for all your help and advice.

Hello,
Is there anyone on this list who is familiar with the area of Kendall county and can recommend where research can be done in person - such as a local library or genealogical society? I'm also looking into Will county as well - if anyone is familiar with that area too.

I don't see a reply. So I'll answer. Hope you're still curious. At the time you mention, there was a Bristol and a Bristol Station, in Bristol Township in the northern part of the county. Lisbon was and still is in the southern part of the county in Lisbon Township. It was about about 14 miles mostly south and slightly west of Bristol.

The town of Bristol was eventually swallowed up by Yorkville the county seat. Bristol Station was then renamed Bristol, just to confuse everyone. The current town of Bristol is what was then called Bristol Station.

They probably used the Bristol post office because it was only a mile or two off the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad line, which undoubtedly brought the mail from Chicago. It may have been the closest post office.

I am looking for the descendants of George W. Needham and his wife Anne (SHANOR). They married in Beaver Co. PA and lived in Mercer Co., PA, before moving to Kendall Co. Illinois in the 1850's. Needham children married HELMER, THROCKMORE, HOLLINGSHEAD and HECKMAN spouses in Kendall Co. In the 1870's the childrens' families moved to Whiteside Co. IL and later west to Boone County, Iowa. Some of them moved even further to Nebraska, California and Minnesota. Thank you. Dave Needham (I am in Centennial, CO since 2004.)
I am trying to find which William Gowanlock married Leah Eyer. From census records he was born Canada, his father born Scotland and his mother born England. I'm wondering if the following marriage registration would give parents names.

Illinois Marriages 1851 - 1900
Lea Eyre, Female, Spouse William Lowenlock, Marriage Date July 24, 1882, Kendall County
Comments: This record can be found at the County Court Records, Film # 1403534.

Thanks for any insight anyone can give,
Helen Bingleman

I had forgotten about the historical society being closed for the winter - thanks. I found Richard & Anna's stone in a small cemetery on Fox road east of Yorkville - could be Griswold - I was just southeast of Plano. There was no sign. I was coming from the Sacred Bluff Cemetery. You are correct - very overgrown. I couldn't find all the stones I wanted - some were heaped up, many unreadable, got a few pictures. Did not realize James & Catherine were at Elmwood. I'll go there next week for pictures. I've attached the picture - incase you didn't have it and wanted it.
Could you email me directly - maertha@comcast.net. I have a few small questions on some of these families.
Thanks, Mary
Mary

Ann Elizabeth SPRINGER and Richard Russell GREENFIELD, Kendall Co IL

Now, about Ann Elizabeth and RR. Ann Elizabeth SPRINGER was born 25 Feb 1933 in Cape May Co, NJ, and died 16 Sep 1890 in Fox Twp, Kendall, IL. Richard Russell GREENFIELD was bron 29 Jul 1823 in Swinefeet Near Hull, Yorkshire, England, and died 10 Mar 1901, probably near Sandwich, DeKalb, IL. Both are buried in the Griswold Cemetery, south of Plano, Little Rock Twp, Kendall, IL. They married on 6 Mar 1851 in Fox Twp.
RR's parents were Samuel C GREENFIELD, Sr., and Frances "Fannie" RUSSELL. They are also buried in the Griswold Cemetery.

Ann Elizabeth was the youngest daughter of James A. SPRINGER, Sr., and Mary Jane WHITEHEAD. Mary Jane died, possibly in Ohio, between 25 Feb 1833 (when Ann Elizabeth was born) and 16 Jul 1937 (when James remarried, to Catherine "Aunt Katie" MacMAHAN in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. Aunt Katie took over the raising of the children from the first marriage as well as those from this second marriage. [I think she was mar/1st to a Mr TUCKER but have no other info on that at this time.]

James A Springer Sr was the son of Micajah SPRINGER, Sr., and Mary [DAVIS?]. Micajah was born in Cape May Co., NJ. Both Micajah and Mary died in Tippecanoe Co, IN. The children of Mary and Micajah SPRINGER were: 1) Enoch, 2) James A., 3) Davis, 4) Elizabeth, 5) Micajah Jr, 6) Sarah,
7) Joseph B., 8) Millicent, and 9) Thomas N. From this is may be seen that the Eliza SPRINGER (Mrs. Enoch) DARNELL, [in my last message] was the niece of James SPRINGER Sr, and a first cousin to Ann Elizabeth SPRINGER GREENFIELD.
James and Catherine SPRINGER and several of their children are buried at the Elmwood Cemetery in Yorkville, Kendall, IL.

I have more information on most of the SPRINGERs and also on DARNELLS, GREENFIELDS, and the descendents of the Greenfield line. I would be happy to exchange information with others who are interested.

FIRST, SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO KNOW: The Kendall County Historical Society is closed for the winter, until at least the 1st Wednesday in April perhaps, and so you should not go in the next couple of weeks.

Yes, there is a connection between the Springers and the Darnells. Eliza Ann SPRINGER (14 Nov 1825, Cape May County, NJ--22 Mar 1906, Randalia, Fayette, Iowa) married on 28 May 1843, Kendall Co, IL, to Enoch DARNELL (5 Feb 1818, Wilkes Co, NC--15 Jul 1890, Sandwich, DeKalb, IL). Her parents were Rev. Davis SPRINGER and Mahala WHITEHEAD. Both were buried in the Darnell Cemetery, aka Sacred Bluff Cemetery, which is probably so overgrown that one cannot get into it. I have personally seen the fallen tombstone of Rev. Springer there a number of years ago. Enoch's parents were Benjamin DARNELL, Sr., and Fannie VIERS. They are also buried in the Darnell Cemetery.

I don't have this book but I am planning on going to Kendall Cty Historical Society in the next couple of weeks to check some other things. Interestingly enough, I just started researching Springer Family because of a connection to the Darnells. Then this past week I was cemetery hunting and found the stones for Anne Springer & Richard Greenfield. I have that picture of you are interested. If you know where James is buried I'd be happy to get that picture. I don't know where Catherine is buried and I don't have DOD. Again, if she's in Kendall County I'd be happy to get that picture also.
Let me know what you're looking for. I can look it up in the next couple of weeks.
Mary

Thank you for the leads! These are my ancestors, and its good to know where they were at the end.. Apparently, Samuel is presumed to be buried with his wife Catherine, but he died in a different county, so still more searching to do there. They were married in 1841, in Allen county, Indiana. From there, they went to Wisconsin. With this new info, I found them in the 1900 census in Plano, (although the name is badly mispelled), with a granddaughter, and I found a marriage record for one of their sons, Jonathon Wesley, also in Kendall County. He married Mary Etta (Bronson - first marriage?) Moe. Catherine Marquart is Samuel's mother, Catherine Bashore (married to Jonathon Marquart). She was apparently born in Kendall County.
Just a side about the name spelling; it was originally spelled 'Whitaker', without the first 'e'. Some of the branches added the 'e' to spell it 'Whiteaker'.
Again, thank you!

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

No, it was not Rufus' children, but Rufus D. Stephens himself who applied for the land. I have his complete file of "Records of the Veterans Administration. Unindexed Bounty Land Applications," from the National Archives. Also have copies of his Surrendered Warrant, showing he sold to a person who (based on further research) was a land speculator.

A search of the 1850 and 1860 census records shows no Rufus, Clarissa, nor other known relatives in Kendall or Grundy Counties.

I have not searched the probate records yet, since I only recently obtained the information on his bounty land.

Regards,
Marjean Holmes Workman

I have no direct information just some suggestions that you may not have tried.
1.-Is it possible that a child of Rufus applied for the land?
Have you seen the actual application?
I'm sure you've checked the 1850 census.
2.-Have you tried Kendall county for a probate record for Rufus & Clarissa?
Rufus D. Stephens

I am trying to find more information, and perhaps a death date and burial location of Rufus D. Stephens, who was a resident of Kendall County on 23 August 1852, when he applied for bounty land for his service in the War of 1812. He actually applied in Grundy County. He gave his age as 73, placing his birth about 1779. However, I think it is probable he was instead born in 1773. His wife's name was probably Clarissa.

Thank you

I'm sorry to say I cannot find Samuel in my database. In fact, the only Whitakers that I see are spelled without that first 'e'...if that means anything.

I do have Catherine Marquart (and am glad to be able to add her husband's name). I have her dying on 6 Nov 1890 in Plano, Kendall, Illinois. (Death Register transcribed by Elmer Dickson). I have her being buried at Morseville, Illinois.(an unknown source...and I don't know that place at all). But Elmer says that she was buried at Monroeville, IN.

It might be that Samuel is buried with her, if you can track her down from this info.

Hi,

I realize that your message is over one year old. I only found it a few minutes ago.

The two biographies you have cited probably relate to the same man. I am a descendant of Weir Sjurson Weeks and the information I have corresponds to the second of the "two men" that you describe. However, information I have also indicates that Weir was born on the Matre farm near Skanevik(Scaanevig) and that, as his mother died when he was young, he had to leave home and was brought up by strangers.

I don't know whether the father and mother you cite are the biological parents but they may be, based upon recurrence of the paternal name and that Weir named one of his daughters Alice. I have no knowledge that Weir emigrated with a sister. My information is that he emigrated with his wife and two children. His sister may have been a passenger as well.

I don't know why the surname Weeks was adopted, but note that it was common practice for immigrants to be assigned English-based surnames upon being naturalized. Usually these would be a derivative of the Norwegian farm name but probably, in some cases at least, nearly pulled out of thin air.

Paul

As I read thru our communications again, it occurred to me that you should know that Bob and Julia had three children... two girls and a boy. Both girls have passed away. The boy is living and I probably could find him through my brother (same class at school.) The girls would have been 68 and 66[?]... one on either side of me in school. There is also a sister of Julia that I know is still living (and a very nice person... married to my high school physics teacher.) Living in a small town makes for many of those unique connections. 8-)
I'm glad my information was helpful to you!
Kristy

I am not related and, at the moment, do not know why I put them in my database.
This book is definitely at the Kendall County Historical Society Library in Yorkville, IL. There is a small charge for research

This book is probably at the Yorkville Public Library. I don't know if they charge for research.

Then I noticed who you were looking for! Aunt Kate was my grandmother's grandmother's step-mother. That is Aunt Kate was the second wife of James A. SPRINGER. His youngest child with his first wife, Mary Jane WHITEHEAD, died at some point after Ann Elizabeth's birth.

Ann Elizabeth was raised by Aunt Kate as were her four siblings, and her six half-siblings. Aunt Kate appears to be well-liked from what I've read.

Ann Elizabeth SPRINGER married Richard Russell GREENFIELD. Their 4th of 6,
was Florence Elizabeth GREENFIELD who married Seymour TOOMBS. Their 2/2 child was Dora Etta TOOMBS who married William A. LAWRIE. Their
1/2 child was Robert Toombs LAWRIE who married Lydea Rebecca LINCOLN.
Their 1/2 child was me. My Grandma Dora loved her Grandma Ann Elizabeth dearly!

If I can help in any way let me know. Are you related to Aunt Kate?

NOTE: I have some info but nothing I have has been "officially proven"...tho I am as sure as possible that I've given you correct info in this message.
I don't have Bob's obituary but I do know some things about him. Robert Andrew DAVIS was born 18 Feb 1910 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was living in Plano by at least 1930, when he was 20 and living "at home" with George, his father; Bob died on 23 Dec 1994 in Aurora, Kane, Illinois, which probably meant that he was in one of the hospitals there. He was buried in Millington-Newark Cemetery in Fox Twp, Kendall, Illinois.
Bob's father was George DAVIS. He was born about 1876 in Wisconsin.
Re: Lyon Farm in Yorkville

You probably should talk to Marilyn who is in charge of the genealogy-history library owned by the same group. Unfortunately she is in process with some by-pass surgery so she is probably not able to answer you quite yet. If you will send me an address where she can reach you, I will give it to her and suggest that she write to you when she is up to it.

There really was a Lyon family. They really owned the property where the Lyon Farm and Historical Village is now. There is a web page for the Lyon Farm that might be interesting to you but I cannot recall seeing anything about the Lyon Family on it. Marilyn is usually the one who answers mail to that website so you may be able to get in touch with her there. But maybe someone is covering for her right now.

At any rate, if you need more assistance from me, feel free to ask.
Kristy
