I have the cemetery books of Johnson Co. and found there are two Kerley Cemeteries. It seems that the bigger one is in the northeastern edge of Grantsburg Township. This one is still used.

There is another one in Bloomfield Township. According to the book I have this one hasn't been used in over 75 years.

I can't find any Dunns buried in either cemetery.

You are correct...I do not appear to have any of those names in my database, all my Smith were located in and around Goreville, Tunnel Hill.....some of theme are still living in the area, they married into the Web, Sullivan, Terry, and Walker families...but no Huckbery's. It never hurst to double check when dealing with the last name like SMITH...have you tried the LDS records...many Smith's were Mormons.

If someone has a copy of a cemetery book for Johnson County, Illinois, I need your help. I am looking to find the grave of Casander Albright who married John Albright in Johnson County in 1885. I am assuming Casander/Cassy was buried in the Albright Cemetery, but I don't really know. I can't find her in the 1900 census and am wondering if she died prior to this date. She was born sometime in either the 1830s or late 1820s. If someone can find her tombstone and give me the dates, I would be so very grateful and could hopefully return the favor. I live in Georgia and may have access to records someone is looking for.

John Cox was Aunt Cassie's neighbor out in Fairmount along with the farm of Pleasant Watts, and William Flemming's farm, also. John was an invalid
due to the war. She lived for one year with him, Laura Ann and Elizabeth in Calhoun. After John Cox died, it really was very necessary to walk to IL for relatives lived there. The battle of Resaca, GA and the Civil War claimed the men of the Hewitts. There did remain Susan Hewitt though with several children nearby up north of Fairmount. Sherman even dismantled the log church at Damascus and threw the logs of it over the OOstanaula river to cross over his troops and baggage of war.

Many of us in the O'Shields family stand with you and support you. We have seen the documentation of highest integrity that Jethro O'Sheal or O'Shields daughter was Elizabeth O'Sheal who married Rev. James Hewitt of Spartanburg County, S. C.

We are proud to be related and acknowledge the public and private records left by Jethro O'Shields family especially his daughter Elizabeth O'Sheal Hewitt of Spartanburg County, S. C. and later Gordon County, GA. Her daughter Cassander Hewitt Cox Albright was the one who went to Johnson County, Illinois.

Additionally, it is not only public records and private records that have proven the family of the Jethro O'Shields family including his daughter Elizabeth O'Sheal Hewitt, but DNA has confirmed this now.
We have the paper trail backed up with scientific proof for our family.

Thank you so much.

Jim O'Shields
Cassander Hewitt Cox Albright of Johnson Co, IL the granddaughter of Jethro O'Shields of Spartanburg County, SC

Cassander Hewitt Cox Albright and her niece Laura Ann Hewitt Johnson of Johnson County, Illinois are descendants of Elizabeth Osheal Hewitt, Jethro O’Sheal, Daniel O’Sheal, David O’Sheal, and John O’Sheal and Alice Apsley of London, Middlesex, England, with previous ancestry in Ireland. Cassander died childless, but had taken her niece Laura Ann Hewitt along with other war orphans from war torn Gordon County, GA to Missouri and then Illinois. The names James Hewitt and Elizabeth O’Shields are stated in Johnson County, Illinois public records as the parents of Cassander Hewitt aka Cassie Hewitt. Some background information on the family follows.

In 2001 I compiled a comprehensive research work on the Osheal family (the O'Shields) and it has continued to be expanded and enlarged with documentation on the various lines including court, land, legal cases of David O’Sheal and his son John O’Sheal who married Ann Boush, (later Holt), and other colonial, territorial documents and miscellany I have researched in connection with the O'Shields family. The title is THE OSHEAL RECORD, THE COLONIAL HISTORY OF THE OSHEAL FAMILY and part of the expansion includes updates of the lineages with DNA test results supporting the lineages and conclusions along with the traditional documentation. Current day descendants often use the O’Shields surname, but some have retained the older spelling of Osheal. I am the DNA Administrator of the O’Sheal and O’Shields family and coordinate with many O’Sheal and O’Shields researchers and their families, as both Y-DNA (paternal lines) and mitochondrial tests (maternal lines) are testing and confirmed for the study. I am a genealogical lecturer and In February of 2009 I gave selected details of some results from this on-going study at a special seminar held at Heritage Hall.

General Details of the class were:

Genealogy class Thursday at Heritage Hall
A genealogy class on finding your hidden ancestors is scheduled for 6-7 p.m. Thursday in Heritage Hall at the Pope County Library in Russellville. David Travillion Bunton will present the program. He published Ozark Pioneers, a book concerning the migration and settlement of a group of Alabama settlers into Arkansas Territory, and continued his research into the history and ethnicity of American immigrants at Cambridge University and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He also authored several family histories. Bunton will present case studies, tips and techniques for finding and documenting hidden ancestors using traditional and online sources. A question and answer session will follow. Reference:https://www.couriernews.com/archivedstory.php?ID=20685

Members of my family researched the Osheal family for many years. One cousin named Pearl began in the early 1900s asking her great grandmother, Lettie Hewitt Cowan, about the older generations of the family. Lettie Hewitt Cowan was a married adult woman by the time her grandfather Jethro Oshields died in 1846. She had immediate and valuable knowledge of her grandfather Jethro Oshields and well as his brother John Osheal and his family. Pearl had a natural curiosity since her mother had died when she was 6 months old and her grandmother Adeline Cowan Harris had died young as well, leaving the matriarch Lettie Hewitt Cowan to rear her daughter Adeline, granddaughter Tolitha, and great granddaughter Pearl. Lettie’s daughter Clarinda also had an interest in the family and in the summer of 1866 she asked her grandmother Elizabeth Osheal Hewitt questions specifically on the Osheal family. In part, here is what was recorded in 1866, the memoirs of Elizabeth Osheal Hewitt:

Jethro Osheal's daughter Elizabeth Osheal Hewitt states:I was born in 1793 on my fathers farm near Dutchmans Creek in Spartanburg District, state of South Carolina. My parents had a prosperous farm and my mother kept us with a comfortable and well kept house. At my wedding my mother gave me 4 double coverlids, 4 counterpanes, linens we had spun and woven together with laces, broadcloths, chintz, and drab cloth. My father made furniture for the neighborhood and gave us a fancy bed, fancy bureau, and table had had made from black walnut. He rived out chairs for us, and my mother made feather and shuck mattresses and gave a looking glass which belonged to her mother. We were well put up. My husbands people had already given much to my husband, but the Hewitts also gave us a cow and calve, and a horse, and between my father-in-law AND MY FATHER JETHRO OSHEAL, my husband received blacksmith tools to make a start on...Much later Elizabeth Osheal Hewitt states:In his youth my father was adventurous and I have heard him tell many stories of his service as a Revolutionary War soldier. The old neighbors often told of his bravery and strength in his service as a soldier. My father died in 1846 and had embraced the Christian faith and baptism for 43 years...-------------------

It has been a worthwhile endeavor to trace this family, as I have also discovered other public documents which confirm that Elizabeth O’Sheal Hewitt was the daughter of Jethro O’Sheal and further information on the early ancestors. I have gladly shared many of these documents privately and selected information to the general public.

In working to gather the history of the families of Rev James Hewitt and his wife Elizabeth O’Sheal Hewitt of Spartanburg County, SC, and later Gordon County, GA, it has been a pleasure to work with many O’Shields researchers and to help them confirm their family lineages.

I am proud that my ancestors relatives Cassie Hewitt Cox Albright and Laura Ann Hewitt Johnson located in Johnson County, Illinois where further records have been found and they leave a rich history of descendants.
Cordially yours,
David Travillion Bunton
Russellville, AR
travillion@hotmail.com

Hi Nan
Should you find further information on Casander Albright, do let me know. She was the sister of my ancestress Lettie Hewitt Cowan, and was an aunt of mine some generations back. They were both daughters of James Hewitt and his wife Elizabeth Osheal, daughter of Jethro Osheal of Spartanburg County, SC.
The family moved to Gordon County, Ga and Casander first married John Cox. After leaving Georgia with an extended group of people, they eventually ended up in Illinois. Casander's niece Laura married Jacob Johnson. My research with the descendants has provided some interesting info, but always looking for more on my relatives, and I would like to get a photo of Aunt Casanders tombstone.
Cordially yours,

David T Bunton
email is travillion@hotmail.com

This year is ending in a couple months so maybe I should state the guidelines for this Johnson Co IL Message Board and Johnson Co IL Mail List.
Suject Line: Must include WHO,WHAT,WHERE,WHEN no exceptions I will delete any general subject line such as LOOKUP, CEMETERY etc.
Proper subject line should be:Lookup Green Randolph Casey, Cemetery, Johnson Co IL.
Obituary Lookup:Green Randolph Casey, Johnson Co IL died 1900.
As you can see the subject is What, Who, Where and When.
I will open this message as it has a subject I am interested in as the CASEY Surname.
Many folks hit the reply button and it has nothing to do with the subject in their message. For example Albright Cemetery nothing is posted about Albright Cemetery.
now if I wanted a photo of John P. Moore tombstone my subject line would be Tombstone Photo:John P. Moore/Albright Cemetery/near Tunnell Hill Johnson Co IL. In my message I would ask if someone could take a photo of the tombstone. Of course being a Moore descendant I see the name Moore I am going to look at the message. I hope I have helped those who are new or have forgotten what a subject line should be. Remember Johnson Co IL should always be in your message. I will be monitoring all my mail lists more.
I am also adding the link to Ancestry.com Guidelines which I adhere to as you will also.
Please take this message as a guideline and helpful productive suggestion in your research. I do not like to police the board or mail list. I and you have better things to do than involve ourselves in others problems.
Don't have very much on the Frix/Fricks family, I am trying to find information on Flora Frix, she was daughter of Berry W. Gideon and is shown living in his household in 1860 Gordon county GA. census. She had two children Fabius/Fambino? and Susan A. Frix. She is not listed after that Susan was still listed with her Gideon grandparents in other census.
I know several Fricks lived in the area around Resaca and Sugar Valley GA. Micheale, Pleasant and others. They were large land owners in the area. They also apear on the old Civil war maps of this area* see attachment*

I believe that Talitha Caroline Gatlin's maiden name was Talitha Caroline Richards.

According to the 1850 Federal Census of Johnson County, IL:

1850 FEDERAL CENSUS
Enumerated: 09 October 1850
Page 334B, Dwelling 176, Johnson County, IL
NAME AGE	OCCUPATION	POB
Hannah Richards 56 VA
Michael 21	Farmer TN
Caroline Gatlin 22 TN
Orlena Territory Gatlin	2 KY

Hannah Richards was my GGG-Grandmother and Michael Richards was my GG-Grandfdather. While not yet proven, it is more than likely that Caroline Gatlin was Hannah's widowed daughter and Michael's sister. In the 1860 Federal Census of Johnson County, IL. Caroline is shown as being married to John Anderson and Orlena is listed as his/her daughter.

I doubt that he is related to your Smith's since yours were there so early on. Wm. Smith born 1850 Ill. moved from Jefferson Co., Ill. to Johnson Co. were he died. I think alot of his children probably died young. Wm. and wife are buried in West Eden Cem. I think they lived around the Cypress area.

Known children:

Kate 1880-1913 married James H. Huckleberry. West Eden Cem.
Olin 1883-1884 West Eden Cem.
Oscar born 1885.
Pearl born 1888.
Myrtle born 1890.
Fred born 1893.
male born 1893. Twin to Fred.

1900 & 1910 Johnson Co. census states Wm. and Mary Alice had 9 children with 5 living.

One daughter married a Smith and was probably dead by the 1910 census because living with her parents, Wm. and Mary Alice, is a grandson Roy A. Smith along with the 2 Huckleberry grandchildren.

Williams M. Smith had a sister Rhoda born ca. 1840/42 who married Thos. T. Modglin and she died in Union Co. Her death certificate did not list her parents.

Wm. M. Smith also had a brother James Smith born ca. 1831.

Thank you your reply and any help you can provide.

Patricia

Roberts or Matthews before they got to Johnson County?

I am a decendent of William Henry Roberts and his mother, Mary Matthews/Mathews/Mathis. Mary and her kids were in Johnson County, Illinois by 1850, if not sooner. I know there is a Mary Matthews/Mathis who married William Simpson II about 1837. I am not sure if this is my Mary or not. Wm Simpson and Mary were both members of the Gilead Church, so it may be. I show no sign of Mary, her kids or her husband, ? Roberts, before they came to Illinois. There is a John Roberts and Mary Matthews who married in Hopkins County, Kentucky in 1825 whos KY census records fit nicely with their family, but still unresearched. I've been stuck on this connection for 9 years...has anyone run across these names?
