I'm looking for any info on the Graves family. My Great-Great-Grandfater was William Raleigh (Rolla) Graves, son of Joshua Graves and Katherine Stewart. He was born in Ripley Co, Mo on March 22, 1852. However, he and his family moved to Goreville where he met his wife, Narcissus Hubbard. William and Narcissus had three children that I know of. Oscar, Jessie, and Arson Raleigh (Rolla). Oscar was born March 19, 1878 in either Goreville or Pulley's Mill.He married a gal named Mamie. I know nothing of Jessie. Arson was born July 31, 1881 in Pulley's Mill. He married Bertha Ann Francis. Bertha was born January 29, 1892 in Goreville. Arson was a school teacher but unfortunely I don't know in what town. Bertha remarried after Arson passed away in 1918. She was always referred to as 'Grandma Dawes' by my father. Arson and Bertha had two children that I know of: Jesse and James. I know nothing of James. Jesse Graves is my Grandpa. He was born Dec 20, 1903 in Goreville, IL. He died November 10, 1977 in West Frankfort, IL and was buried in Goreville, but I'm not sure in what cemetery. I haven't had the opportunity to go with my father and Grandma to visit his burial site. I was searching through this forum and found that there is a Graves Cemetery around Goreville somewhere. I would be interested to know who is buried there. Any info at all on my family would be very helpful. Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas!

Does anyone know the parent's name of Vernilia Graves? She married Hiram Jackson Worley in 1837 in Johnson County, Illinois. I am from that line of Graves/Worley.

Yes, yes, yes....I know that name....Hiram Jackson Worley. I hit a very big brick wall in my research of the Graves family. I got all the way back to the late 1700s and couldn't get any further. I am starting to get back in the groove with my research. I have to get my paperwork out of my attic. Let me look it up and I will let you know. Sorry it took so long for me to post a reply. I specifically remember the name of Izora Graves. I just thought it was an odd name, that's why I could. I'll get back with you.

My grandmother was Lily Belle Graves, from Gorville, Johnson County, Illinois. She married John Logan Thornton. I was not born until after her death. I understand that her father was a doctor. That is all I know - not even his first name. Belle and John had 9 children, the youngest son was my father, John Bell Thornton who was killed at age 24 in Detroit, Michigan. Don't know if this is any information for you.
