I'm trying to make sense of conflicting records, so please make corrections if you see errors.

Plat of Jo Daviess Co., IL, 1893, Rice Twp., Section 4 NW, south half, B. Because of the Galena River, there is a section 36 that would have been in West Galena, but it's east of the river and numbered as a second section 36 for East Galena. East Galena is north of Rice, so the two parcels were about two miles apart.

FamilySearch.org database of the 1880 Census, Rice, Jo Daviess, IL, LAMPE:
John B., 77; wf. Her research will be donated to the Elizabeth Historical Society.

Surviving are her husband, Hank Selig; her children, Kere (Dan) Knautz, Gregory (Katie) Von Rox, Stephanie (Chuck) Radeke and Robbyn (special friend, Chad Schemehorn) Sasek; grandchildren, Alexandria and Dakota Graf, Colton Knautz, Zoe and Zane Von Rox, Ethan and Lane Sasek and Chloe and Spencer Radeke; her sister, Barbara Hill; stepchildren, Debra Selig, Karen (Robert) Madura, Linda (Michael) Briscoe and David (Tammy) Selig; stepgrandchildren, Sam, Wil and Elizabeth Madura, Shane, Luke, Clay and Max Briscoe, Jenna Maloney, Jorie, Jacob and Jacie Selig and Tavian Schuster; and two almost grandchildren, Dylan and Nathan Schemehorn.

William Joseph Boxleiter and Irene Frances Hipschen were married in 1922. Registered in Dubuque County courthouse Marriage records, Book 13, page 92. Irene filed for divorce on December 5th, 1945 and the divorce was finalized January 2, 1946. William was required to pay $20.00 a month support money. The total cost of the divorce was $13.65. There was an injunction against William. In my opinion, there may have been some problems resulting from his return from WWII, as there was mention of him having served in the military under Affidavits Filed. Clerk of the court, Dubuque County courthouse #31203 They remarried in 1948 Book 74 page 570, Dubuque County Courthouse Marriages. William's mother was related to my line. Hope this helps. She would have had a son around 1950 by the name of Dickie Lee. She may have married Boyd Grenoble from Morseville. My cousin states the last name sounded like "WILZEEN" but could have been something similar. Have not found any marriage records for Boyd Grenoble or birth records on Dickie Lee Grenoble to lead me in the right direction..thanks

Looking for Jennie Kastner/Seck Galena IL

Hello. I am not sure what this list is about, but I see many questions and occasional answers. I have never been able to find an obituary for my Great Grandmother, Jennie Kastner (maiden name Seck). This is Roots Web info below. I looked through the microfiche of the Galena Gazette in the past without success. Perhaps there is someone at the Galena library who has better access to documents than I do. She is the daughter of John Charles and Sophia Seck, to the best of my knowledge, though the documentation of this is a bit fuzzy. The obituary might answer some questions.

# ID: I4282
# Name: Jennie SECK
# Sex: F
# Birth: 1871
# Death: 1962
# Reference Number: 4282

Hello. Thanks for asking. It is Seck--John Charles, born in Prussia is her father. The usual spelling for her is Jennie. I have seen some indication she was born as Mary J. Seck. She lived in Galena on Broadway. Her husband was Charles Kastner.

Does anyone know the person who has the actual records (book) for the Citizen's Cemetery in Scales Mound? I am specifically looking for any information on Valentine Wickler who was born in 1828 (Germany) and died Jan 11, 1865 during "the war" and is buried in said cemetery. I cannot find any civil war records with his name...even variations of the name. Am hoping to find out cause of death etc. Thank you.

Tara

I would appreciate assistance in obtaining a marriage record information, if available, on: Barnabus or Louis Barnabus Gaffney to Virginia Sherrill in Jo Daviess County on 3 June 1855. This may have been a second marriage for Virginia. This may have been a second marriage for Gaffney also. I would appreciate all the information from the marriage record.

Trying to figure this family out as Louis & Virginia Gaffney are buried in Des Moines, IA on a relative's cemetery plot and no apparent connection to the family.

I am looking for any information on a relative of mine who lived in this county around 1820's to 1870's. His name is Timothy Murphy. Born in Ireland in 1809 (approx) and died in Illinois in 1888. Was married to Hanora(sp) around 1840 or so +/- 5 years. They are on the federal census rolls in 1870, 1860, and 1850. I am looking for a marriage record, any birth records for his wife with a maiden name(he was born in Ireland), or any records on his children (Jane, John, Ellen, Maggie, Mollie, Louis, Louisa, Thomas). Also, any record or possible hint on where he came thru customs or what his parents names might be.

The cemetery is very small and is part of the acreage of Ronald Lawfer, 4389 S Willow Road, Stockton, Il 61085. I happened on to the cemetery out of curiosity just last week. (Aug. 13) but had heard of it several years ago. The number of graves in the whole cemetery would number about 20-30 at most and possibly less. I had more interest in Morseville Cemetery where my relatives are buried.
Some years back people did surveys and registered most of the graves of many of the county cemeteries. One of my relative married Brice Blair, son of Charles Blair and Abigail Tyrrell. I dont have any prveious ancestors to Charles Blair. Brice Blair married Hazel Keller, daughter of Mary Ellen Nash and Louis Keller, son of Gottllieb Keller and Pauline Schlagel.
I do know there were a number of Blairs in that area. of Berreman Township which is just adjacent to Wards Grove Township.

Mary Ann Van Voltenburg daughter of Henry Van Voltenburg and Sarah Van Blaricum
born Nov 13, 1828 in Jo Daviess County,Ind. died Feb 15, 1908 in Osage, Mitchell, Iowa.
Married Dec, 7, 1843,John R. Lewis born 1817 in CT

John Lewis, one of the early settlers of Mitchell county, came here in 1854, bought 480 acres of land in Lincoln and Douglas townships, and the following year 240 acres on section 31, Lincoln township. The latter was the Hart claim, and prob¬ably the first made in the county. In the spring of 1855 he came from Illinois, and settled on the southwest quarter of section 31. He was born in Hartford, Conn., Oct. 22, 1817. His parents were Samuel and Mary A. (Hull) Lewis, his father a native of Denmark, and mother of Poland. His father, when John was one and a half years old, moved to Pottsville, Penn., remained there two years, then moved to Athens Co., Ohio, bought a farm and engaged in farming and also harness and saddle making, that being his trade. Here the father, aged sixty-one, was killed, in 1825, by the falling off a bridge. John lived with his mother until he was fifteen years of age, then spent eighteen months at the shoemaker's trade in Nelsonville, and in the winter driving team on the Hocking canal. In company with another man he cleared $600 by a contract of construction on this canal. He then bought and still owns 130 acres of land in Athens Co., Ohio. He then spent a year and a half in buying cattle for certain contractors in Virginia, after which he took a flat boat load of tan bark down the Ohio, selling boat and bark at Cincinnati, then went to Louisville and was employed as ship carpenter. In 1834 he went to Florida in a United States steamboat, and in company with sixty others purchased three condemned war vessels from the government, and went on a whaling voyage, which he followed for six years. In 1842 he went to Texas on an exploring expedition in search of land. On the 27th of February lie left Texas and arrived at Keokuk, Iowa, the 7th of June, having walked the entire distance, in company with William Waters, then went to Elizabethtown, Jo Daviess Co., Ill., engaged in carpentering and was married there, Dec. 7,1843, to Mary Vanvoltinburg. Here he bought land and engaged in farming, stock buying and also ran a saw mill. In 1854 he sold out there and came to this county. He has a good frame house, barn 40x60 feet, with wing 24x76 feet, with basement under the whole. He now owns upwards of 1,000 acres of land, and is extensively engaged in stock raising. He is widely known in the county, and has taken a lively inter¬est in town and county affairs. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis have had thirteen children, eleven of whom are now living—Henry, Seth, Silas, Sarah, Mary A., Wellington, John, Rose, Sidney, George, Leeth and Charles. The first child died in infancy; Rose died when three years of age.

Source: History of Mtchell and Worth Counties, Iowa, 1883, page 347.
My Great-GreatGrandfather William R Carey married a Juliet VanVoltenburg on September 29th 1875 after his first wife Mary Harrington had died.

They had one daughter that grew into adulthood. Her name was Sophrona D. Carey. She was born July 14, 1876 near Hanovor, Illinois.

Juliet died November 10th 1880 near Hanovor, Illinois. I was wondering if you have any information connecting her to your VanVoltenburg's. I do not know how her parents names are other then I believe her mothers 1st name was Rhoda and she was married to a Lucas. This was her second marriage.

Thanks

I hope this message will reach you since this post is 10 years old.

I believe her parents are Joseph Edwards and Ellen R. Mitchell I'm researching the Mitchell family in hopes of leading back to the common ancestor in Cumberland County, PA.

Joseph Edwards married Ellen Mitchell 15 March 1837 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois

by 1860 Ellen is living without Joseph but her brother Alexander Stinston Mitchell lives in her household. 1870 & 1880 the Lyons children are living with Ellen (Mitchell) Edwards in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. Ellen moved to Foster County, North Dakota with her brother Alexander and her son Paul Edwards around 1884 you will find Ellen on the 1900 census in Lake George, Foster County, North Dakota with her son Thomas Jefferson Edwards.

Ellen's brother Alexander Stinson Mitchell was born 1809 in Pennsylvania is said to be the Nephew of Colonel James A. Mitchell but I think its more plausible that he was the Nephew of Major James A. Mitchell born 1779 Cumberland Co, PA.

Regards,
Robert M.
