Dr. Thomas Evans, gentleman, of Clun, Shropshire (England), in his will of 1873 left a bequest of 200 pounds " to my niece Eliza or Elizabeth (wife of James M. Spratt) now or lately residing at Galena , Illinois"

Any help in finding James Spratt's family would be appreciated.

Per the 1878 JoDaviess County History, page 752:
James M. Spratt. Dry Goods Merchant, cor. Main, Hill and Commerce Sts., Galena; residence, cor. Bench and Green Sts; born in Binghamton, N.Y. March 20, 1825; came to Galena in the Fall of 1839; engaged in mercantile pursuits ever since he came here; in business for himself since 1849; first wife was Amelia Marshall of Plattsburg, N.Y.; present wife was Eliza Johnson; married in N.Y. City; she was born in Binghamton, N.Y.; they have six children.

I have the same information about Eliza Johnson and James Spratt in Galena, Jo Daviess, IL and from the same source, as your first response in August. But what do you have about Eliza? Would Thomas Evans be her mother's brother, therefore her mother's maiden name was Evans? Also, I have a notation with a question mark that her name was Eliza Hughes Johnson

Michael, I see you have the name Britten as part of your surname. I've been trying to find info on Charles Britten Johnson who's dau Emily Evans Johnson m into my Newill family in Shrops. I've got a book full of info on the Newills', & have recently tracked down Eliza Hughes Johnson too, so have found she became Mrs. Spratt who you were searching for. Elizabeth Evans who m Charles Britten Johnson was Thomas Evans sister. I'm assuming you're somehow related to the Britten Johnsons?? Eliza's full name was E Hughes Britten Johnson. Perhaps we could share info? I'd like to hear from you. Roz
