Simon Singer
Simon Singer, whose death occurred on Sunday morning, was born on Oct. 28, 1845 in the township of Guilford, Jo Daviess county, Ill. Before he was twenty years of age, he had enlisted in the union army, being assigned to the 8th Ill. Cav., Co. D. He saw service at Shenandoah Valley, and Fairfax Court house, and remained with this company until the close of the war, being honorably discharged at Benton Barracks, Mo., on July 17, 1865.
Mr. Singer was married on Jan. 25, 1870 to Ernestine e. Elberth, who with four daughters and one son are left to morn his death. The children are, Mrs. R. R. Duff, of Chicago; Mrs. Lewis D. Travel, Chicago; Charles, of Linden, Wis., and Mrs. Ralph N. Bostwick and Miss Martha, of this city.
Two sisters also survive, Sister M. Tychonia, of St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Mary Remakel Dean of Dubuque, and one grandson, Francis R. Duff of Chicago.
Mr. Singer was a respected citizen, and a good friend, and his death will be generally regretted throughout the community.
Funeral services were held at two-thirty o’clock this afternoon from St. Mary’s Catholic church, of which Mr. Singer was a devout and consistent member.
A quartette composed of Mrs. Chas. Scheerer, Mrs. A. J. Millhouse, J. C. Boevers and F. J. Meller sang “Asleep In Jesus,” and “Nearer My God to Thee.” The floral tributes were very beautiful. The remains were taken to the German Catholic cemetery for burial, where military services were held by the members of the E. D. Kittoe post, G. A. R., of which post Mr. Singer held the office of quartermaster for a period of over twenty-five years.
The active bearers were, John Norton, George Foyt, Jos. Bauer, Oregon Beldon, Valentine Schmitt, and Henry Cogan. The honorary pallbearers were, Judge Rippin, Maj. Geo. S. Avery, Capt. William Vincent, Frank Ortscheid, T. E. Moore and T. J. Sheean.
