Scales Mound; born in Bavaria, Germany, May 11, 1814; came to this Co. in 1840; settled on the farm where they now reside; owns 158 acres of land; married Margaret Saam in 1842; she was born in Bavaria in 1812; they have four children: Mary, Simon, Margaret and Theresa; lost two: Caroline ad John; Mr. S. was School director eight years and Overseer of Highways four years; Simon was married Jan 25, 1870, to Ernestine E. Elbarth; they have three children: Bertha, Charles W. and Clara C.; Simon was in Co. D., 8th I. V. C.; enlisted in Oct., 1864; was in Shenandoah Valley; was in several skirmishes; mustered out at Benton Barracks, Mo., in July, 1865; are members of German Catholic Church.
