Hello. I am looking for information on Caroline Tonsor Bunse. She married Frances Bunse in Germany (date unknown). Frank and Caroline came to the United States on 23 Jun 1852 on the ship Edmund. They arrived in New Orleans. They left from the Port of Bremen. They settled in English Township, had 7 children (one being my 2nd great grandmother), and are buried at St. Mary's cemetery.

I am trying to see if any of her family also came to Jersey County, like siblings. I know there were/are Tonsors in the English Township/Jersey County area but can not find a connection between her and any of the other Tonsors.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Acy Powers and Mary Rowden Powers

First, without going into detail, can you give me your father-in-law's first name. I have him and all his siblings in my file. I want to put you into the file in the right place and with a notation that you are researching the family.

Second, Mary Rowden Powers was a granddaughter of William Echols Rowden and Mary Levina Pruitt(some show her name as Levina H but that's wrong). Mary Rowden Powers' father was Harden Joseph Rowden and his first wife Lucretia. Lucretia most likely died about 1854. Harden and Lucretia had 7 children. Harden then married Lucinda Jane Prowe in 1855 and they had 8 children.

Third, I believe you have found another Acy Powers in the Civil War records. The only Acy Powers that I found (using several databases) was one who served in a Georgia unit. According to Grant and AJ in the 1900 census, their father was born in Missouri. From what I've have found on numerous Civil War veterans, they usually served for their birth state or their current residing state (if the same side as their birth state). There was an Asa F Powers from Colorado who served, but the unit he was with fought in Kansas state for the most part against the Indians and a few times around the Kansas City MO area, but never got into the central and eastern parts of the state where Washington Co is.

Fourth, here is what the Washington Co MO (via US Gen Web) is showing from Brian Oster's marriage records contributions when searching for Asa Powers -

Asa Powers
page 158
Washington Co MO
Asa Powers & Miss Mary Rowden; married on Tuesday, 26 October 1869 by George M. Effinger, ordained M. G. at Washington Co., Mo

Fifth, AJ's brother Grant was the younger one of the two. AJ was born in Feb 1872 and Grant in Jun 1872 both dates per the 1900 census.

Debbi

Debbi...

You're right about WHO WAS ASA/ACY Powers... I cannot find him in Illinois Gen Web, or Illinois state website. however, I did find him listed as Acy Powers in te Illinois Civil War Soldiers and Sailors wesbite. It was pretty interesting to say the least. However, I cannot find Marriage records for Mary Rowden or for Acy/Asa. However, they did have more than just one son Andrew Jackson... they also had a son older than Andrew by the name of Grant NMN Powers. He is the informant on AJ's death certificate. Plus all of the children of Grant, AJ's son... remember Uncle Grant Powers. Grant lived in Grafton where AJ was hit by the train when he was reportedly 55 years old.

Now, which Mary Rowden is this? I don't assume she's the daughter of Abram Rowden, so this must be the Mary daughter of William, Abram's brother. Abram's daughter Mary Jane was older by 2 years I believe. Please let me know??? If you know of course.

Asa and Mary Rowden Powers were married in Washington Co MO where Mary had moved to with her father and step-mother in the 1860's. They were married on 26 Oct 1869. The 1880 census shows that their son Andrew is living with Mary's brother Miles Franklin Rowden, his 3rd wife and his family in Jersey Co IL. There appears to be some conflict regarding Andrew's birth since in 1880 he's listed as being 11 years old born in MO and in 1900 he's listed as being born in 1872 in IL. To complicate things, Mary is reported and appears to be single living with her father and step-mother in 1870. She may have been separated but I suspect that Asa may have died by 1870 and she was pregnant with Andrew thus her residence with her father and step-mother. I also suspect that Andrew may have been an only child. Then with Andrew living with his uncle in 1880, this may be a clue that Mary had died as a result of his birth or between his birth and the 1880 census. I can not find Mary in 1880 census or thereafter. Who was Asa Powers? I cannot find any Asa Powers in Jersey Co IL or Washington Co MO in 1860 or before. This could be a sign that Asa was not his first name and in the census as a child with his parents he is listed under his proper given name when then creates a problem of its own.

Debbi

I am looking to verify the parents of Bushrod W. Hamilton as William and Lydia {Trask} Hamilton and his ancestors as Silas son of Elisha Hamilton. How have you connected them? I have seen them William Hamilton as the son of Dr. Silas Hamilton, who is in turn the son of Elisha Hamilton, all with VT roots. My problem is that Elisha and Mary (Smith) Hamilton's son, Silas, was b. 2 May 1773, Brookfield, Worcester Co., MA. Phillip Gray gives Silas's b.d. as 10 May 1775, Tinmouth, Rutland Co., VT. My guess is that these have been incorrected connected as the same person and are really two different Silas Hamiltons. You seem to be descended from this family or know information. Can you help me with documentation that sorts these families out? Thanks, Marsha Hamilton

The Wm Coates that I have was born in Apr 1864, Greene Co IL, to Alfred Coates and Mary Alma Monk Coates (Alfred's 2nd wife, who was also the sister-in-law of his first wive). Alfred was born abt 1829 in Tennessee. About 1850 Alfred married #1 wife, Eliza Jane Finley (the older sister of my GG Grandmother, Frances Finley Monk) in Arkansas. Mary's parents were Shadrack Monk (b 20 Dec 1802 in Russell Co VA) and Margaret (last name unknown) (b abt 1798 in NC). I've never heard about Indians in either of these lines, but, clearly, I don't know a lot.
HTH

At the moment, I have no proof of the Hamilton Brothers parentage. I do have the three Brothers, Clarence, William, and Bushrod, as children of William Hamilton and Lydia Trask. I got this information from a biography. My main interest is with Clarence and William Hamilton, who married the daughters of Abraham Jett, who is my family line. There is a posting from Rhonda Morgan, that you might be interested in. She is a Grandaughter of Bushrod Hamilton. I will be glad to keep you in mind, and let you know if I find any thing. Sorry, I can't be of more help.

Not sure if father is the same Grant who later married Minnie Nokels? Son Grant D used last name “Hammon” while his mother with Thomas Hammon, then reverted to last name Cunningham and married Katharine Bick on 7 April 1928 in Jersey county. They had a son William Wesley who died 1928, sometime after 1930 another son Charles Grant (?) Cunningham. Nothing more on the last son. Any relatives of these?

Trying to find my Munsterman family in 1860... In 1850 they are in Township 8, Range 12 and in 1870 they are still in Township 8, Range 12. In 1880, they are in English Township which I believe is the same area as Township 8, Range 12...

When you look on ancestry, there is no listing of T8,R12 OR English for 1860... what area is that called? The husband of the family (Clemence Munsterman) died in May 1860 and was/is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery... I am assuming that the Munsterman family (wife Johanna, sons Adam and Anthony) are still in the area in the 1860 census but not sure where...

Thanks for any help...

In the 1860 he was 23 (b. 1837) living in Phils Creek Twp. He was born in Ohio. Parents were Michael and Sarah Marshall.

The James Marshall in 1870 is a different one from 1860. He is 28 (b. 1842) living in Twp 9, R 10. He was born in Illinois. Living with wife, Martha, also age 28. A son, William, age 2, and most likely a brother, John Marshall, age 25. From the marriage records, this James married Martha Ann Britton, 23 Aug 1866 in Jersey County.

We were just in Jerseyville & looked up several people in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. We contacted Crawford Funeral Home since they sell the plots for that cemetery. He was able to direct us to the correct locations. However, his records are sketchy & no records for the really old part of the cemetery. He told us no one has records of the old part. But Mickey Prill & Joe Hennigan are other contacts at the church. I have a phone no. for Prill if you're interested. Let me know by private e-mail.
loyjw@sbcglobal.net

Just wondering if someone had done some research of Benj Suttles. Benj Suttles b. 13/04/1842 d: 19/07/1921, wife Elizabeth Suttles b. 12/07/1842 d. 24/10/1909 buried in the Scenic Hill Cem. believe Grafton, IL. I don't know if an obit might have been printed. I keep track of Settles/Suttles of Greene Co. IL. I descend fron Jesse Settles of Greene Co.
I found a tombstone in the White Hall Cemetery, White Hall IL. Greene Co. It was for Clement M. Suttles, B:02/05/1920 D: 06/20/1990 Believe he died in Jerseyville area and was buried in White hall Cem. ??? Is there possible a obit in the Jerseyville papers?

Do you have any information on William Coates. I hear stories from my dad and he says Williams wife or someone down the line was a full blooded indian. I have been trying to verify this but keep getting dead ends. I would appreciate any informatin on the Coates family you could supply.

Thanks

Chad Cox
