Do you have any information on William Coates. I hear stories from my dad and he says Williams wife or someone down the line was a full blooded indian. I have been trying to verify this but keep getting dead ends. I would appreciate any informatin on the Coates family you could supply.

The Wm Coates that I have was born in Apr 1864, Greene Co IL, to Alfred Coates and Mary Alma Monk Coates (Alfred's 2nd wife, who was also the sister-in-law of his first wive). Alfred was born abt 1829 in Tennessee. About 1850 Alfred married #1 wife, Eliza Jane Finley (the older sister of my GG Grandmother, Frances Finley Monk) in Arkansas. Mary's parents were Shadrack Monk (b 20 Dec 1802 in Russell Co VA) and Margaret (last name unknown) (b abt 1798 in NC). I've never heard about Indians in either of these lines, but, clearly, I don't know a lot.

My Grandmother, who was the daughter of William Coates, Virgie Coates Cox always spoke of the Indian line in our family but I can't find anything. Anyway thanks for the info. If I come up with anything I will let you know
