"The Story of South Henderson" is only about the church. There was a book by Virginia Ross and another lady that gives all the grave sites in Henderson county as of 20 years ago or so. There is talk of doing an update of the cemeteries. Mary Booth

The book "The Story of South Henderson" is about the founding of the church and it's previous years. The copies are very hard to come by. It has been out of print for several years. Your best chance to get one is at a sale (auction) or an antique store in Henderson or an adjoining county. Mary Booth

The S. Henderson Church book is not about the cemetery. It is a history of the founding of the church and it's history since. There was a cemetery book (Cemeteries of Henderson oounty) by Virginia Ross and another lady that does list everyone buried in S Henderson Cemetery and all the other cemeteries in the county. It does need updating. I don't remember just when the book was done but I am thinking about 1975-80. You may be able to contact the Henderson County Library and someone may look up the information for you. The book is out of print but there have been a lot of requests for copies. Mary

Abstracted from Bulletin of the California Central Coast Genealogical Society, Vol. 10, pg, 72, "Stereopticon" column, from "San Luis Obispo Tribune" issue 4 Dec. 1875: In April last, Romas B. Record left Henderson Co., Illinois for California. D.M. Findley of the same place followed in July his neighbor and friend. Mr. Record first to Watsonville, Monterey Co. and Mr. Findly direct to Santa Barbara. They later settled in Arroyo Grande. They purchased from Steele Bros. 102 ac. each about 1 1/2 mi. below the town of Arroyo Grande. Mr. Findly paid $85 per ac.; Mr. Record, $75 per ac. Mr. Findley represented Henderson and Mercer in the Legislature of Illinois for 3 successive terms 1869-75.

Was donating this and noticed you have the surname Findley in your tree; hope it is of some help. I am not kin nor researching this line.

Both were born in Washington Co., NY and probably moved to Henderson Co to be near brother-in-law Michael Lant and his wife Elizabeth "Betsey" Dunn and brother-in-law John Mains and his wife Francie "Fanny" Dunn.

I have detailed information on Lucretia lake's sister Eliza and the names and aprox. birth dates of the other brothers and sisters. I have been tring to establish a time line for Johnson Lake and have some places and dates on him, I have his aprox. birth date as 1785 in New York, married to Marry Willis also of New York. I too am trying to trace ancestry in Henderson County Illinois. I know that they lived in Stronghurst when my grandfather John Paul Jones was born 8-28-1899 to Jeremiah Jefferson Jones and Susan Tilley Jones. The mother of Jeremiah Jefferson Jones was reported to be "Little Black Bear".

Sorry, I haven't seen your e-mail. Yes, Asa and his wife are buried in an area at the Terra Haute cemetery in the southeast corner. There are other Hart stones but I don't remember the names. I think there are about 4 family plots of Hart's but I don't remember any of the other name. My husband is descended from Jesse and Anne Booth thru Owen K, Booth. Mary Booth

The book about South Henderson was printed many years ago. The only way to find a copy is at an auction or antique store. They are hard to find and will cost around $50.00. We found our copy in an antique store in Aledo, Illinois.

Two members of the board for the South Henderson cemetery and church are Russell Liston and Jane Weir. Another board member just passed away recently and another is in a nursing home. My husband has four generations of family of his family buried in the cemetery. We have been doing restoration work in the cemetery the past three years. There is a Henderson County Genealogy group that meets in the library at Biggsville once a month. Does this help you? Mary Booth

On the sixth of November 1851, Mr Bacon was united in marriage with Miss Lucretia Lake,daughter of John and Sarah Lake, who were natives of Pennsyvania. Five children were born to them: Almira J.,now the wife of Granville Priest, of Iowa; Charles E. a farmer of Henderson county, who was united in marriage with Miss Evaline Galbreath in 1879, and is a republican in politics; Viola C, wife of John Shull, an agriculturist of the Hawkeye state; and two deceased. the article goes on to tell of the death of Mrs Bacon and the remarriage of Franklin. Bessie (Collins) Swanson, born Mar 1880, married Edwin Swanson in Henderson county March 22, 1899. They lived on a farm around Stronghurst. She may have later married a Moore. Unable to find any 1910, 1920 or 1930 census with any of them in it, only the 1900 census. She was the daugter of Frances Marion Collins and Eliza Matilda Spiker.

We dedicate, with pleasure, a part of these pages to a family that has been long and well known in Henderson county. There are many others who have equal, and in fact prior, claims upon the community if we esteem only the date of their settlement in the county, but desiring to put upon record the prominent and worthy of the day in which we write , we take up the account of the family of David Gearhart. In doing so , we realize the fact that at best we can only leave a finger-board to guide the future biographer to a more sucessful account of the family. The subject of our sketch was born in 1819, in New Jersey, where he was educated at a common school and brought up to farming . he moved in 1852, to Fulton county, Illinois, where he immediately renewed his occupation. He was married ,in Fulton county, to Miss Catherine Young, September 24,1856. By his marriage he had four children. After a residence of eight years in Fulton county, he removed to Warren, where he remained two years . In 1854 he came to Henderson county, to visit and look at the country .Returning to Warren, he moved to this county in 1862, at which time he bought eighty acres of land on sec.12, and afterward 300 acres. By his second marriage , with Mrs. Elizabeth perrine, they have five children.

The following family list is unverified, except for the marriage record. Census records indicate a good 'fit' however, with ages, place of origin, and locale. Henderson Co., Il is in close proximity Keokuk,IA and Clark Co., MO locations where other family lived.

1900 Census, Lomax, Henderson Co., IL Ambrose, born Dec 1821[this is inconsistant with the 1880 census], born PA, parents Germany, Sarah, born Dec 1838 [s/b abt 1835] born Ireland, father England, mother Ireland, mother of 8, 5 living, married 47 years. John Wesley Patterson married Alice Ann McKee in Crawford Co. Illinois on 7-13-1871, found in the Il. Marriage info. If you will go to www.familysearch.org you will find some info on this family. You might already have this info. Good luck. Margie
