The house that was formerly a one room school belongs to Laura Newton Stinson.

The former tar-paper brick faced store with the faded Coca Cola sign, Coney's Grocery, has long since been razed. In its place is a flagpole and a sign "Downtown Powellton"' The old machine shed still stands but is derelict. There is a dead Pepsi machine out front. Some junked vehicles, including a hammermill and a junk truck wit the newton name lie among the weeds. Bill Newton lives ina high pitched roof house just east of the schoolhouse, where his daughter lives. They sell asparagus during the spring. Powellton has no Post Office. It was formerly at end of Burnside route but is bow served b y Dallas City, ZIP 62330

A mile north, junction of CR1200East and CR2400 north is a sign "North Powellton Suburbs" the Rich Starr house to the west has a Powellton Suburbs sign in front. South, at the junction of CR1200E and CR2200 North is a sign saying South Powellton Suburbs. This is probably the smallest town anywhere to have purported suburbs.

At least it has a 4-way stop so it is not a case of "if you blink you miss it!"

The late David Radel was kiulled in a terrible collision of his truck with that of a rural newspaper deliverer on December 7 1997. His widow Lenore Radel, continues to lease the farm to Dan and Mike Carlisle of Carthage Illinois to farm. With these properties they farm close to four square miles.

Wanda and Hiram Newton are buried in the back of the Thornber Cemetery. The Newton Family donated several acres of land to add on to this cemetery. In December 2012, the late Josephine Lambert Vick was interred in the family plot of Millard and Sarah Lambert and their son Eugene and daughter Marjorie Rings, whose husband is buried elsewhere. There are several Lamberts and Seighfrieds, related, buried in Thornber Cemetery. These are distant cousins of mine as are the Newtons on the lamb side of the family. The Lamb family has a reunion every second weekend in June.

Just northwest is the radel farm Lilah Ruth dies in 2011. She, and Edward died 2008, are buried in Nauvoo catholic cemetery. The will sintates that the house is to remain in the family. A neighbor leases the farm. The three remaining Radel Children, Charles, Mary Margaret "Peggy"and Patricia and Dennis Radel and Becky Simpson, children of the late David Radel, all own a share of the house and use it as a family retreat. Charles stores his motorhome in the machine shed. He sold off the trailer and farm equipment after Lilah Ruth and Eddie deceased.

Thank you! As far as I know, Thomas Doran never lived in Warsaw, but I believe he lived in Carthage. I'd like to exchange information with you. Please send me an email.
Hugh & Katherine Kelley were my gg-grandparents on my father's side. My great-grandmother Kate Kelley Rose was Mary Anne's younger sister. I was aware of the Doran/Ft. Madison connection, but I was not aware that Thomas Doran ever lived in Warsaw.

The immigration papers for Hugh that you have are dated too late since he had children born in the U.S. in the 1850's. The immigration most likely took place between 1852 and 1855.

Some of what I have found regarding Hugh & Katherine may indicate that the marriage was a second one for one or both of them. There is a marriage record for a Hugh Kelley and a Catherine Murphy in Lee Co IA in the late 1850's, for example. The oldest Kelley child, Michael, was definitely born in Ireland in 1851/1852.

The Roses were involved in the steamboat trade and possibly John Harvey was also. Mary & Sarah were born in Cavan, Co. Ireland & immigrated to the U.S. in 1848.

John Michael Kittel was my great great grandfather. His daughter, Christina, is my great grandmother. I have most of the information you have written here, but I have not before found the book "Pioneers of the Prairie". I couldn't access it online. Where is it for sale or is it online for viewing?

One of my sources is "The History of Hancock County Illinois", which can be found online. I have been unable to trace him back to Germany, and did not know he came here with his parents. I have been to the small cemetery where the first two wives are buried, and photographed the headstone. My picture is not as good as another one which has been posted by someone else on Ancestry.

This is the first mention of his parents I have found. Does the article give their names? His "Intent to become a citizen" document says he first settled in Albany, New York, but I have not been able to locate a ship for his passage from Germany.

The ground for the school and the Layman farm are all farm land nowadays. I was in communication with Paul Layman several years ago but he was getting into advanced years and I don't know if he is still living at this point. I would have to do some research to see if there are pictures of the school or the Layman farm. Best bet would be to check with the Hancock County Historical Society. The Kibbe Museum in Carthage or Western Illinois Threshers at Hamilton may have a picture of the school. Threshers may have the school records?? That organization is in the same vicinity as the school used to be and they have a country school on the grounds.

A Meacham here! My father, in his research, or according to a relative of his, found that a lot of the "Meacham" spellings were based on Mormon Meacham converts, who, in their own family history research discovered that the original spelling from England was "Meacham" and thus began spelling it with the extra "A" as a way to distinguish themselves from non-Mormon Mechams. Not sure how true the story is, but that's what I'd heard.

Interestingly enough, my father, who is LDS, and his brother who is not, pronounce their last names differently. His brother who left the LDS church, now pronounces it MEEchum, but our family still goes by MEE-kum.

Also, wanted to mention that we come from the Erastus Darwin Meacham & Stephen Peabody Meacham line as well.

I am trying to fill in about 50 years on Sarah Ann Smith. "Annie" was born January 25, 1889 somewhere in Illinois, married Frederick Henry Wallis in 1909 in Swan Twp, Warren Co, Illinois. Fred H died in 1923 Annie dies in 1973 in West Point, Hancock Co, Illinois, but is buried with her husband in Stice Cemetery, Monmouth, Warren Co, Illinois. It doesn't look like they had any children, but I don't know.

have a survey of the Woodlawn Cemetery. Using the list of people that you posted on Rootsweb, I have looked for those people.

Zenith is listed as Zenas Winfield 1836-1914
Harriet d. 1921
m. George Futhey 1867-1950
Florence 1902-1929
George 1879-1923
Florence Dean 1884-1968
Charles Steele 1871-1955
Ray 1886-1949
Violet 1895-1973

Hope these dates are of some help to you. Rice is one of the native sons of Hancock county and although his residence here has not been continuous he has yet spent the greater part of his life within the borders of the county..."
I just found this a short time ago, but am hoping to go further hopefully. I also have photos I would like to identify. My grandfather, Harry Clark Rice, was named after Clark Harry Rice, and I would like to know more about him.

Hello,

I am a descendant of this couple through their child, Joseph Frank Berger, who I believe was born in 1851 in Nauvoo County, IL. Frank married Mary A. (Molly) Mitchell in 1873 and they had a number of children, including Joseph C. Berger, born in 1884 in IL. Joseph C. Berger married Katherine Westerfield in TX, who gave birth to my grandfather, Joseph C. Berger, Jr. in 1909 in TX. Joe C. Berger, Jr. met my grandmother, Vivian Arlice Beene in college at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. They married in LA and had 3 sons, one of whom is my father, William Beene Berger, born in 1944. My grandfather Joe Jr. died in 1988 in LA.

I have run into something of a brick wall when trying to research backward through Ernst and Marie's histories prior to emigrating to the US. I would appreciate any info you have and are willing to share.

Best Regards,
Nancy Berger Schneider
USA

Thank you so much for your offer. My mother's aunt, Caroline (Zimmer) Schilling, wife of Oscar Schilling, died in 1919. After that, her sons were said to be intermittently in "an orphanage" in Quincy. Their names and birth years:

Herman Adam Schilling, born 1909
Eugene Alvin Schilling, born 1911
Harold Lester Schilling, born 1913

There was also a daughter Bernice Louise Schilling, but to the best of my knowledge she was not placed in the orphanage, but was brought to Oscar's sister, my grandmother, to be cared for until Oscar married again in 1926. After his remarriage, the family reunited in Warsaw.
I have original documentation from St. Aloysius in Quincy IL. My mother and father worked there for many years and when they were talking about tearing it down my dad grab these boxes and gave them to my mother. (She loved genealogy and just recently passed away). I have original pictures, letters to children etc. from about 1910 to the 1930's. I will be honest I am just starting to go threw it but if you give me the name I will look for it. THanks

So I have done a little digging and found that Otis lutz actually had a store on main business drag. One of our NHS Board directors remembers him and his wife, from many years ago. Several of your generations have lived here and I also saw an advertisement. We, the NSH Board would like to offer a membership to our museums where we honor the heritage families of Nauvoo. Please see our website at www.nauvoohistoricalsociety.org

We are a non profit and all membership funds and donations help to keep our museums open and pays for a member newsletter. Let me know and I will add your info to the newsletter to see others who remember your family and may be related.
Marilyn, NHS Secretary

I'll see what I can find. There was a lutz, Maybe in the 1950's, that was friends of the history buffs, the Nauvoo Historical Society. I have only been here for twenty something years (we came to help the Sisters of St Mary's Academy) but as secretary of NHS, I have seen your family name several places at our local museums.
I'll be back in touch but it may take a bit of research.
Marilyn

Oh, I wish I would have seen the exhibit. My great great grandfather lived there in late 1850s until his death in 1861 or 1862. His name was Joseph lutz born 1824. Him and my great great grandmother caroline huber came over from Alsace on the ship medora in new Orleans on November 28 1853,then moved there and died. Then Caroline remarried to a Jacob koppenhofer from wurrtemberg. But, I know I need to come to nauvoo some day to discover exactly what happen to my great great grandfather. And also to find out what city exactly he came from. I check the ship log and only says he's from France and a farmer. But in nauvoo, he's listed as a carpenter, which by the way is common in our family ;). But beyond that, I don't know how he died, what kind of carpentry he did, or even what city he was from in France so that I could continue my search .... :'(

Hancock County has early death certificates at the courthouse in Carthage. I'm not sure when they start, but I have one from November 1882, and it states the name of the cemetery.
