Will do free lookups in Hancock County area

I'm willing to do free lookups in the Hancock County Illinois area. This includes marriages, divorces, trips to cemeteries (pictures too), trips to the local Historical Society as well as the courthouse, etc. I'm going anyway, and several more things to look up shouldn't be a problem.

If you request copies of things to be sent to you, I may ask for reimbursement of postage and copy fees, depending on the cost to me and depending on how many requests I get at the same time.

If I'm not contacted on a Friday evening, I can probably look this stuff up the same day you request it (except maybe if you're asking for a picture of a headstone). But if not, please be patient and I will get back to you on it.

Surnames: Downing, Lamb
I have a great aunt and her husband buried in the Myers Cemetery in Pontoosuc Township. I'd love to have a photo of their grave markers. They are:
Oliver S. Lamb (1858 - 1927
Ida Downing Lamb (1857 - 1916)

If you get out that way, perhaps you could keep them in mind for me. My direct email is
rdown3657@cox.net Thanks a million, Ray Downing in NV

Surnames: Stephenson/Stevenson

William and Sara STEPHENSON:

I am seeking the cemetery in which Sara and possibly William Stephenson are buried in Hancock Co. IL.
Here is the information that I’ve confirmed thus far:

William and Sara are found in:
1860: Illinois: Hancock Co. Wythe Twp. pg. 20

1861-1868: Sarah dies between 1861-1868 while living in Hancock Co. IL.
1862: William enlists in Company H. 118th Illinois at Basco. Pension file states he is resident of Wilcox.
:
1865: Newspaper article: Illinois: Hancock Co. Wythe Twp. 12 year old son killed when dragged by a colt.

1868: Find marriage certificate for William in Anderson Co. Kansas in 1868-marries Sophia Spriggs Brown

1880 Census: Wythe Twp. Hancock Co. Illinois: Found in the household of James P Randall, son in law.

1885: 14 Nov. William dies—possibly in Kansas but I find no intestate or will papers there.
I would appreciate any information that you may find on William and Sara. Thank you so much for your kindness in doing lookups. William and Sara are my 2nd great grandparents.
Regards,
Barbara

Got it! We rarely go that direction, but it just so happened that we had planned to go to Burlington today, and it was just a tiny little detour to go to the cemetery on the way.

I'm in the process of emailing you your picture right now. While I was there, I got pictures of all the other Lamb's that were there (there were a lot), so if you want those, I can send you those as well. I could also tell you their names & dates if you'd rather just have that. Let me know...

Surnames: Woodard Bowman
Good morning from smoky Southern California!
I am descended from David Woodard and Malinda Bowman (Boman) of Hancock Co., but have several questions and "searches". As such I feel it is only appropriate to pay for time and materials.
Malinda B Woodard was buried in Rosemont Cemetary in December 1881 - this is questionable as she died in Kansas, Also, there is a plot map of Hancock Co dtd 1848 that shows a plot belonging to "A"(?) Woodard, but I cannot find out his Christian name or anything else about him (perhaps a brother to my David). Anything that could clarify these questions is most helpful. Additionally, any information about Woodard's in Hancock Co. prior to 1840 would be useful - the apparently migrated from Tennessee.
Best Regards
Dave

This is so kind of you to offer to do look-ups. If it wouldn't be too much trouble I would appreciate it if you could look through the estate packet for Peter Temple. He died 4 Feb 1854. I have the Final account and it mentions some vouchers. I'd like to know if any of the vouchers mentions where he is buried (like maybe for placing of a tombstone or opening the grave)

And also looking for estate records for his wife Sarah Temple who died between 1870 and 1880. Looking for same info on her---when she died and if it tells where she is buried.

I will be glad to pay for copies, postage and for your time as well. Thanks so much Carolyn in Ohio

I'm looking for death/cemetery info on John Gayley and his wife Elizabeth. They lived in La Harpe,Hancock Co in 1880.
John was born about 1843 in Illinois, son of Robert Gayley and America Woosley. I'm not sure when he died. I believe it was just before 1900. The spelling could be Gayley or Gailey.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Surnames: Gayley
Mike,

Elizabeth Gayley (wife of John J. Gayley) died 24 June 1876 at the age of 24 years, 7 months. She is buried in the LaHarpe (Illinois) cemetery.

I also found a Robert L. Gayley (1861-1923) whose wife's name was Retta Nelson. Together they had 6 children, one of which was named Keith (1892-1922)

I found nothing on John, other than what I wrote above, nor did I find anything on the surname Woosley.

There are other Gayley's if you're interested, plus I have Retta's obit. It is possible there could be more information on the old newspaper microfilms but I haven't had a chance to look at them yet.

I tried to email you but it wouldn't go through. Let me know if you want the other Gayley information.

Yes, I would love to have the info. I was looking through my notes and I found that I have John Gayley's death in Sept 1893 but I don't know where. Elizabeth was his first wife. (His second wife was Elizabeth also which makes things confusing). Robert was John's brother. I think I confused things adding the Woosley's. They lived in Woodford Co. She was the daughter of Joshua Woosley.
Here's my email address.

Thanks again,
Mike
