Nauvoo's early settlers (Mormon)

Hello-

My GGG-Grandfather, Erastus ROOT, and extend family (Asa Davis, Jeremiah Root, D. Culp) were part of the Mormon settlement in Nauvoo.

I'm having a hard time finding an account of this early settlement even through the LDS libraries. I have sent for a few records that seem to be unavailable.

Does anyone know if there is a history available on this settlement?

Any information would be very much appreciated.

The Nauvoo Public Library is on the internet. Don't have the link but give it a search, they will be able to give you the names of a number of books and the author's names. Then go to your local lending library and see if in stock or if they can get through another library outlet. The Nauvoo Library takes queries.
Nauvoo was originally called Commerce, the name was changed when LDS came there. After the migration in 1846 the name remained. Commerce was very small, a farming community. After LDS left the population dropped dramatically and settled down to around 2,000. If you have not been there it is very pretty. The LDS church has bought up much of the riverfront property and has reconstructed homes and shops much as it was when they were originally there. They have also rebuilt the Temple which is in town. The drive from Quincy north to Nauvoo is the Scenic River Drive and it is indeed very scenic.

In "The Nauvoo Journal", Jul 1990, Vol 2, Number 3, I found Jeremiah Root in the 1842 Tax Records Index of Hancock Co, IL. He was on page 206 of the original records (7N8W was his property).

The Nauvoo Journal is/was published quarterly by the Early Mormon Research Institute, P O Box 2650, Salt Lake City UT 84110-2650. I don't know if it is still in existence.

There is a great research center at Nauvoo itself. You might write to them at Nauvoo but I don't have their address handy. Do a SEARCH.
