I am looking for the birthdate of Edith Gertrude Webb, her parents were Vernon Witt Webb and Minnie Roberta Elam. they were married in 1910 and moved to Grundy Co. Ill. They had 5 children, Manford, Rachael, Edith, Fern, Aubrey.
The paperwork I have says Edith was born in Grundy, I am not sure about the rest of them. The family did move back to TN before the 1930 census.

Also after she left Vernon Redell Cook she moved back to Verona, Ill to live. That would have been in about 1959 she had 2 boys with her as the others were older. I don't know if she remarried again or not. The post in Rootsweb says that she married and Mr. Johnson. But that is all.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Lavania

Thanks, I've seen the site before, but I still cannot locate this plot. There is no marker, so their obviously would be not picture. On the site it gives locations of graves. Is there a map to pinpoint the locations. This may help in me finding the location of this burial.

Buried Potters Field, Block A, lot 1, grave. Removed to Block A, lot 6, grave 19 in Potters Field.

Hi Dave- No, I have not worked on the Burger family for a couple of years. I left the issue of who was Barbara's mother pretty much where it was, and never did find for certain where John's mother was buried.

I agree with you that the marriage record seems to be a more reliable source, but still don't feel certain enough to change the entire family line!

I'd love any further information you may have uncovered on this family.

Thank you Kathy. I work third shift and just woke up. So I may come back to add to this reply later. Must have coffee :). I know for a fact that it was not Braidwood, so that can be deduced. Whatever town it was, made Braidwood look as bustling as Joliet. We stayed in Braidwood or near there. It was the motel that John Candy and the other guy filmed part of "Trains, Plains and Automobiles." Well anyways, the day we went to the small town, we started in Wilmington. Left Wilmington and visited the other town. Came back to Wilmington to go to Braidwood. I recall that the road that the factory was on was between the business district and the factory. We pulled over the car to look. We were there for quite a few minutes and not one car passed us.
I am Kathy Wells. Yes, the Donald you mentioned is my great grandmother's b-in-l. I don't know if the well-known company bought the farm from Donald or later on. The family moved to Durand around 1914. We were there in about '88 or 89.
I have already been in contact with Coal City Library. They could not find information.

Thank you for your response. The three at Oakwood are related. Someone at the Coal City Library gave me an email address to someone at Morris Library. I am hoping for a response.
This may be OT, but I was in the area about 20 years ago with my mom, grandma and g grandma. Somewhere outside of Wilmington we went to a small town that I think at the time had only a population of like 100 or 200. It was so long ago that I don't remember a whole lot. There was a couple store fronts and a few houses. This is where her brother-in-law, Donald Shenk, owned a farm. But I think it was bought by a cleaning chemical company or other big name manufacturer. If I recall correctly, the farm now factory was located not to far from the business district. Do you know of this town? Not sure, but I don't think there was any town between this and Wilmington, but I can't remember in what direction we left Wilmington.
Also I recall her saying that her grandfather was buried in Illinois. My mother asked her if she wanted to try to find her grandfather's grave. But I can't recall if she knew the actual cemetery. She was old and didn't want to walk around a cemetery, if she didn't know where to go. A part of me wants to think she mentioned that her grandfather was buried in this small town. But most likely that is my overactive imagination. I am just glad she had a chance to visit her parents graves.

Sand Ridge in Grundy County

I am looking for any info on either the town or the cemetery of Sand Ridge in Grundy County. To make a long story short, even though there is a Sand Ridge in southern Illinois a Google search of "Sand Ridge in Grundy County Illinois" shows that Sand Ridge is located between Morris and Minooka.
My great grandmoter's uncle, Joseph Kallis, died in Wilmington on December 28, 1903 and is buried at Sand Ridge Cemetery. I think his father, Frank Kallis, who died on December 25, 1880 is also buried there. The Kallis family lived in Grundy and Will Counties between 1850s and 1880s. I have searched for possible burials in Braidwood and Wilmington, to no avail. Frank also had a mother-in-law that I think died and buried in Illinois. Her name was Lena or Ellen or Helena Selinger or Seliger.

Uniform ID

I thought I'd ask this here because the person in the photo was most likely a Grundy County resident. My cousin sent me an unidentified photo of a man that appears to be in his 30s. I think the photo may have been taken in the 1880s most likely. The man is in a uniform (not a US government uniform) that has some insignia on it I cannot identify. On the hat there is a sword with a curved hilt crossed with a matchlock with a morion helmet (think Conquistador helmet) above them. Below this is the number "823". Also on the right breast is a crossbow with the "823" on it. These insignias appear to be of a high quality and not the lower quality of most fraternal organizations. There is also a starburst type badge on the left breast pocket. Militia? Police? Fraternal organization? I'm stumped.

Does anyone have a clue on this?

Thanks,
Greg

Location of small town....could be one of three.NONE of them has another town between them and Wilmington.
Channahon
Custer Park
Braidwood
Channahon township has Dow Chemical Co. It's right off INT.55 at Arsenal Road exit very near the river and a huge bridge. It's about 10 miles north of Wilmington
Braidwood,Reed Township has Braidwood Nuclear Power Station
You know the town because it has a railroad running right through the middle of it.It's about 3-5 miles south of Wilmington on Rte 53
Custer Park HAD back 20yrs maybe one or two stores. Right near the river also, south of Wilmington, you know when you go through it by the rise in the road almost over the top of some houses.I know of no company at all exisiting there now or 20 yrs ago.
I did check Will County Genweb site
http://will.ilgenweb.net/
More than a few burials Oakwood cemetery, Braidwood SHENK
By doing a search of this website for the surname SHENK I found a researcher Matt SHENK listed. There was also Kathy Wells researching Kallis and Selinger. Know either of these folks?
Would the Donald SHENK you mentioned be Donald b. 17 Nov 1883 IL died 17 Nov 1970 Durand,MI wife Emma NELSON b. 23 Apr 1891 died 30 Dec 1972 Durand,MI?Emma a daughter of Henry NELSON wife Elizabeth KALLIS,right?
IF so John Fishbeck has them listed in his charts, John also has other SHENKS listed, one Selinger and 3 Callis'.
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi

That Donald SHENK is listed 1900 census as a son of Joseph SHENK wife Ellen, in Custer Township,Will,IL. In 1910 census he's in Channahon township(where Dow Chemical located in 1960-1970's)
Custer township was once part of Reed township(Braidwood) because of their very close proximity several cemeteries could be possibles
CUSTER township
Brown cemetery sec 15 NW 1/4 south side rte 113 just east of essex road
Oakwood/Braidwood(also sec 15 located on east side of essex road(see above some SHENKS burial noted on Will County Genweb)
Custer Park cem(sec 24)located south of IL rte 113 & west of Ohlues Rd. in Custer Park

Just in case
Coal City Public Library has on line indexes and an email addy for reference department.
http://coalcity.lib.il.us/ssghs.asp
might also try the Wilmington Public Library-they have a website-index card file of obits from mid 1860's to current.
Kathy
Reed township
Bohemian National Cemetery(sec 16) west side of Essex Rd.,1/2 mile south of Rte 113, down a long lane.
Mount Olivet/Rosehill(sec 21-located on the east side of cemetery rd south of Smiley Rd.
Could be when you visited would have been late 1960's-early 1970's? Chemical company would have been DOW, Channahon township Channahon is within 10-15 miles of Braidwood and Custer-directly North west of them.

To add to the location information provided by Kathy:

To get the exact location of Sand Ridge (located between Minooka & Morris on US Route 6), go to:

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

enter Sand Ridge, Minooka IL in the search bar

If you click on "G" in the results, it will pull up the map for the Sand Ridge community. It is a very small consisting of mainly houses and a few small businesses. Click on Satellite on the upper right. Now you can zoom in using the bar on the left to get a closer look at Sand Ridge.

If you look at the south side of US Rt 6 & SW of South Tabler Road, you will see "Equistar", a large chemical company. It is owned by Lyondell Basell so they may have changed the name. I passed thru this area over the weekend and did not pay attention to the sign.

As Kathy stated, there are no cemeteries in Sand Ridge. Aux Sable, St Mary's and Dresden are the three closest. If you search Google Maps with the cemetery name followed by minooka, grundy county IL, it will pull up the locations of those cemeteries as well.

You can also zoom out on the map to see the proximity of Sand Ridge to Wilmington.

Deb
His death record at the Grundy Co cthouse shows he died Sept 12, 1903, age 85 (or 86, cannot tell for sure if the numeral is a 5 or a 6 due to bad handwriting), 4 months, 5 days. Hence, it appears he was born May 7, 1818 (or 1817). His obituary, at least the one in the Morris, IL paper gave no real info. I emailed a huge library in Lancashire, but they could not spare the time to look for his obituary there. (He died while on a trip to the U.S. to visit his daughter Mary Ann Smith Clayton.) My cousin told me that he died the night before he was to have left to go back to England. She got this info from her mother, who was close to Mary Ann, as Mary Ann was her mother's grandmother and babysat a lot for my cousin's mother. My cousin also told me a neat story about Mary Ann. She was walking through a meadow with a pregnant friend back in Lancashire when the friend went into labor and Mary Ann helped to deliver the baby! Also, my cousin says that the family members back in England raised a gravestone for him there, even though he is buried in Morris, IL. (He is almost certainly buried next to his wife Miriam in Leedfield cemetery, Oldham, Lancashire.) My cousin told me that she has a photo of the Lancashire gravestone. I am waiting for her to call me back re: seeing some old family photos. Hopefully the stone in England will give a date of birth that we can compare to the IL death record.

Now, we probably do have a decent chance to take the Smith line back one more generation anyway, if we can find a baptismal record for John R. Smith, since we have an approx date of birth and city of birth(Ashton-Underlyne, per the 1871 census) and we know his father's name. Baptisms usually took place about a month after birth.

Mary Ann Smith was the daughter of John Robert Smith and Miriam Ashworth. John R. Smith and Miriam Ashworth were married Jan 19, 1846 at St. Michael's Church, Ashton-Underlyne, Lancashire. Per the Daniel Clayton-Mary Ann Smith family Bible, Miriam died April 23, 1879 at age 54 (b. 1824-1825) and is buried at Leesfield cemetery. (This is located at Oldham, Lancashire). The marriage record for John R. and Miriam shows fathers as being: Robert Smith and Moses Ashworth. The Smith line may well end here, at least I fear so.....

Now, the 1871 Hurst, Lancashire census records are available free online. These records show that Miriam (Ashworth) Smith was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, about 1826. While not 100% proven, the LDS records at the Family Serach website very strongly suggest that Miriam was the daughter of Moses Ashoworth and Elizabeth Butterworth, who were married March 24, 1818 at St. Chad's Church, Rochdale. Miriam apparently had these siblings: Robert Ashworth - marr. 1846 at St. Chad's, Samuel Ashworth - also marr. 1846 at St. Chad's, Hannah Ashworth Lowe - marr. 1845 at St. Michael's, Ashton-Underlyne, Elizabeth Ashworth Oakes - marr. 1843 at St. Michael's, Ashton-Underlyne and Jane Ashworth - baptized 1836 at St. Chad's. Thus far, I have not found Miriam's birth or baptizmal record.

Again, per the LDS Family Search website, Moses was baptized May 22, 1791 at St. Chad's, Rochdale, a son of Thomas Ashworth and Miriam (Marion) (Merriam) Meadowcroft. Thomas (apparently way too Thomas Ashworths to go back further in my view) married Miriam at St. Chad's, Rochdale on Oct 10, 1785 (or Oct. 4?) Miriam was baptized Aug 17, 1761 at St. Chad's, a daughter of John Meadowcroft and Hanna (Hannah) Homer. John and Hannah were married Aug 17, 1760 at St. Chad's, Rochdale. There are at least 5 diff John Meadowcrofts listed on the Family Search website as being bapt. in Rochdale in the years 1725, 1726, 1726, 1739 and 1745, so that makes it tough for the Meadowcroft line.) Miriam apparently had siblings: William, Robert, John, Ann and Elizabeth. However, it is possible that John's parents were: William Meadowcroft and Jennet (Janet) Lord, who were married July 7, 1734 in Rochdale? Meanwhile, it appears that Hannah was the dau of John Hamer (Hamor) and Mary Holt, who were marr. June 6, 1734 at St. Chad's, Rochdale.

Summarizing this situation, Miriam is a rare name now and does not seem to have been a real common name even back in the 1800's, and names are often passed down through generations, so I am confident that Miriam's parents were Moses Ashworth and Elizabeth Butterworth, with Moses' mother having been Miriam Meadowcroft. (Elizabeth may have been bapt June 5, 1796 at St. Chad's, but several Betty Butterworths were there at the same time, so this line could also end here?)

Meanwhile, I do have some more info on the Clayton line. If interested, email me.

I am researching the Ferguson and Thayer families. My family, the Bradford family resided with related Thayer's in 2 states and three locations. In the Alexander Valley, near Healdsburg early property owners were the Ferguson, Thayer, Bradford families and there is also the name Grundy on property records. The Thayer and Bradford families also lived in Lisbon, Kendall, Illinois and Saratoga, Grundy, Illinois area. These families likely also lived near Oneida, NY and Middletown, CT. Other related families are Moore, Andrew, McEwen, Chandler, Ward

We had already seen the cemetery cards, but didn't see Robert Cunningham's probate record. I'm STILL to this day trying to find out who his parents where, what happened to son George, and what Nancy's maiden name was. I think I must be the only person researching this line :-(

Kelly
