I thought I'd ask this here because the person in the photo was most likely a
Grundy County resident. My cousin sent me an unidentified photo of a man that appears to be in his 30s. I think the photo may have been taken in the 1880s most likely. The man is in a uniform (not a US government uniform) that has some insignia on it I cannot identify. On the hat there is a sword with a curved hilt crossed with a matchlock with a morion helmet (think Conquistador helmet) above them. Below this is the number "823". Also on the right breast is a crossbow with the "823" on it. These insignias appear to be of a high quality and not the lower quality of most fraternal organizations. There is also a starburst type badge on the left breast pocket. Militia? Police? Fraternal organization? I'm stumped.
Does anyone have a clue on this?
Thanks,
Greg
