I am looking for any info on either the town or the cemetery of Sand Ridge in Grundy County. To make a long story short, even though there is a Sand Ridge in southern Illinois a Google search of "Sand Ridge in Grundy County Illinois" shows that Sand Ridge is located between Morris and Minooka.
My great grandmoter's uncle, Joseph Kallis, died in Wilmington on December 28, 1903 and is buried at Sand Ridge Cemetery. I think his father, Frank Kallis, who died on December 25, 1880 is also buried there. The Kallis family lived in Grundy and Will Counties between 1850s and 1880s. I have searched for possible burials in Braidwood and Wilmington, to no avail. Frank also had a mother-in-law that I think died and buried in Illinois. Her name was Lena or Ellen or Helena Selinger or Seliger.

Sand Ridge is in Aux Sable township,Grundy Co. There are three cemeteries in that township

In 1895 all that was listed in Sand Ridge was a railroad stop,no post office,etc.

I checked both the Grundy Co and Will County death indexes(1878-1915) for KALLIS,SELINGER?SELIGER
only entry was Will County for your Joseph age 46yrs died 28 dec 1903 residence Wilmington burial Sand Ridge
I checked both Wilmington cemetery transcriptions for these two surnames also.

Thank you for your response. The three at Oakwood are related. Someone at the Coal City Library gave me an email address to someone at Morris Library. I am hoping for a response.
This may be OT, but I was in the area about 20 years ago with my mom, grandma and g grandma. Somewhere outside of Wilmington we went to a small town that I think at the time had only a population of like 100 or 200. It was so long ago that I don't remember a whole lot. There was a couple store fronts and a few houses. This is where her brother-in-law, Donald Shenk, owned a farm. But I think it was bought by a cleaning chemical company or other big name manufacturer. If I recall correctly, the farm now factory was located not to far from the business district. Do you know of this town? Not sure, but I don't think there was any town between this and Wilmington, but I can't remember in what direction we left Wilmington.
Also I recall her saying that her grandfather was buried in Illinois. My mother asked her if she wanted to try to find her grandfather's grave. But I can't recall if she knew the actual cemetery. She was old and didn't want to walk around a cemetery, if she didn't know where to go. A part of me wants to think she mentioned that her grandfather was buried in this small town. But most likely that is my overactive imagination. I am just glad she had a chance to visit her parents graves.

Channahon township has Dow Chemical Co. It's right off INT.55 at Arsenal Road exit very near the river and a huge bridge. It's about 10 miles north of Wilmington

You know the town because it has a railroad running right through the middle of it.It's about 3-5 miles south of Wilmington on Rte 53
Custer Park HAD back 20yrs maybe one or two stores. Right near the river also, south of Wilmington, you know when you go through it by the rise in the road almost over the top of some houses.I know of no company at all exisiting there now or 20 yrs ago.

By doing a search of this website for the surname SHENK I found a researcher Matt SHENK listed. There was also Kathy Wells researching Kallis and Selinger. Know either of these folks?
Would the Donald SHENK you mentioned be Donald b. 17 Nov 1883 IL died 17 Nov 1970 Durand,MI wife Emma NELSON b. 23 Apr 1891 died 30 Dec 1972 Durand,MI?Emma a daughter of Henry NELSON wife Elizabeth Kallis,right?
IF so John Fishbeck has them listed in his charts, John also has other SHENKS listed,one Selinger and 3 Callis'.

That Donald SHENK is listed 1900 census as a son of Joseph SHENK wife Ellen, in Custer Township,Will,IL. In 1910 census he's in Channahon township(where Dow Chemical located in 1960-1970's)
Custer township was once part of Reed township(Braidwood) because of their very close proximity several cemeteries could be possibles

Mount Olivet/Rosehill(sec 21-located on the east side of cemetery rd south of Smiley Rd.
Could be when you visited would have been late 1960's-early 1970's? Chemical company would have been Dow, Channahon township Channahon is within 10-15 miles of Braidwood and Custer-directly North west of them.

If you click on "G" in the results, it will pull up the map for the Sand Ridge community. It is a very small consisting of mainly houses and a few small businesses. Click on Satellite on the upper right. Now you can zoom in using the bar on the left to get a closer look at Sand Ridge.

If you look at the south side of US Rt 6 & SW of South Tabler Road, you will see "Equistar", a large chemical company. It is owned by Lyondell Basell so they may have changed the name. I passed thru this area over the weekend and did not pay attention to the sign.

As Kathy stated, there are no cemeteries in Sand Ridge. Aux Sable, St Mary's and Dresden are the three closest. If you search Google Maps with the cemetery name followed by minooka, grundy county IL, it will pull up the locations of those cemeteries as well.

You can also zoom out on the map to see the proximity of Sand Ridge to Wilmington.

Thank you Kathy. I work third shift and just woke up. So I may come back to add to this reply later. Must have coffee :). I know for a fact that it was not Braidwood, so that can be deduced. Whatever town it was, made Braidwood look as bustling as Joliet. We stayed in Braidwood or near there. It was the motel that John Candy and the other guy filmed part of "Trains, Plains and Automobiles." Well anyways, the day we went to the small town, we started in Wilmington. Left Wilmington and visited the other town. Came back to Wilmington to go to Braidwood. I recall that the road that the factory was on was between the business district and the factory. We pulled over the car to look. We were there for quite a few minutes and not one car passed us.
I am Kathy Wells. Yes, the Donald you mentioned is my great grandmother's b-in-l. I don't know if the well-known company bought the farm from Donald or later on. The family moved to Durand around 1914. We were there in about '88 or 89.
I have already been in contact with Coal City Library. They could not find information.
