Does anyone know when Mathias Merriman died or is buried. He also went by King Merriman. Or his wife Harriet (Culbertson) Merriman. I have nothing after the 1880 Census.
I do find a document where Harriet Merriman married an Abraham Walker in 1890, but can not find them in any Census either.
I would appreciate any input. They are my 3rd Great Grandparents. Thanks.
Angie Gritzmacher

I’m not related to any member of this family.

Not very likely you will ever discover the data you are seeking. These statements explain why -

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++
Does anyone know the surname of the wife of Adam Smith II of Fayette Co? They were found in the 1820 Federal Census of Fayette Co. It has long been thought that she is the sister of William Howell but she is not in the list of his siblings. It has also been proposed that she is a daughter of Delilah Daniel's but I have not been able to find her in a list of Delilah's children. Anyone have any ideas???

John "Uncle Jackie" Berry

I realize that several people have been stuck on this particular man for a number of years now. Since I haven't seen anything on him here in the message boards in a while, I thought that I would retouch on the subject.

John "Uncle Jackie" Berry was born August 20, 1794 in Port William, Kentucky. He lived to be 103 years old, and fathered 21 children by two wives. He first married Elizabeth Melton, who was born October 18, 1806 in Rutherford Co., North Carolina. They married October 27, 1826 in Fayette Co., Illinois. Their first child was William Kendall Berry born 1828 in Fayette Co., Illinois.

After that, they moved to Missouri, living a short time in Phelps and Crawford Co., Missouri before eventually settling in Dent Co., Missouri.

The rest of the children by Elizabeth were,

John Henry
Martin Henry
James Hamilton
Rebecca Elizabeth
Amos Ery
Francis Marion
Cynthia Anne
Silas Asa
Loucasta Rebecca
David Arcadia
Elizabeth
Jemima Angeline
Enoch Ebenezer
Jackie Jr.

Elizabeth Melton died August 29, 1865 in Dent Co., Missouri. After which, John married a widow Rebecca Lucinda Creasey York, born January 21, 1823 in Tennessee.

They had an additional six children, who were,

Martha Jane
Joseph George Washington
Mary Ellen
Calvin Theodore
Andrew Jackson
Pacific

John "Uncle Jacke" Berry died January 7, 1898 in Salem, Dent Co., Missouri at the age of 103.

From what I understand, no one has found out who his parents were. There is some speculation that his father was also born in Kentucky in 1769 and his mother's name is Rebecca born 1774 in Germany. But I am not so sure that that information is even correct.

I suspect that John and Elizabeth gave their first born William a surname as a middle name "Kendall". I was thinking that either John's mother or grandmother was a Kendall. Does anyone else have any similar suspicions?

Has anyone out there gotten any further with John Berry? Is anyone out there willing to compare suspicions or notes?
In response to Lodawick, Ludwick, or the many other spellings...I am a descended through his son, James Benjamin Harrison, then son William Andrew Harrison. Lodawick is my 5th Great Grandfather. I have two different obits for him, and can take him back to 1830 in Williamson County, Tennessee. From the information that I have found, he had 16 children and I mostly sure I can account for 15 of them. Information on Lodawick himself is sketchy to say the least. I don't believe he knew how old he actually was. Census records show a different birthdate just about every time I come across one. The two obits I have both state he was 94-95 yet his headstone reads 92 years.

William Andrew Harrison was born 6 Nov 1857 and d. 15 Feb 1922 in Fillmore, Montgomery County, Illinois. He married Sintha (also spelled Cynthia) Donaldson in 1878 in Montgomery County, Illinois. He is my ggg Grandfather.

I would Love to share any other information. I am fairly new to this and would really like to see if anyone else has any information I haven't come across yet. Thank you! Amber Harrison-Heistand

My ancestor was last found in Berkeley Co., Va. (present day W.Va.) He was found as heir at law for his father John Gray in land deeds, in 1846 his heirs sold some of that land and their names were Isaac, Samuel and others. From this document I see that he and his children are located in Fayette Co., Illinois. I would like to connect with any researchers who have this family in their database and wonder if anyone would be willing to look in death and will indexes for date of death and his will for me. Of course I will be grateful for any information concerning this family. William is the elder brother of my 4x Great Grandfather John Gray who remained in Berkeley Co. W. Va. till his death in 1822.

Wayhouses on the National Road active 1875-1882

I'm looking for names and locations of wayhouses that were in business around 1880. I hope to find guest registers that may include my ancestors the John Robert OHNSAT family, who traveled the National Road by Conestoga wagon from Pittsburgh PA to Pittsburgh KS around 1877. (Parts of my research are documented in my blog, http://tgkohn.blogspot.com/2012/06/ohnsat-mystery-on-nationa...)

I know that National Road travel was eclipsed by the railway system, beginning as early as the 1860s. However, a family anecdote claims the family took the National Road, and even one register entry would help prove the anecdote's truth.

Thus, what was a main throughfare to St. Louis may have had a different local name, though its function was as a continuation of the National Road. I've travelled all of I-70 and most of U.S. 40, the construction of which pretty much obliterated the actual National Road. I welcome replies that include information about

- Still-extant remnants of the National Road
- Wayhouses in the county
- Rail development in the county
- County historical societies or museums that may hold such information

Thanks,
Thomas Kohn
tgkohn@aol.com
(Direct replies encouraged)

Hi. My name is Margaret. I am the grand-daughter of Ernest E. Riley, who was the Son of Murty E Riley, The Son of William Burr Riley . William had a twin sister America Rachel Riley born on 03 march 1848. William is the son of George W. Riley and America Rachel Shepard. I also am trying to find more on this side of my family. Ernest (my grand-father) raised me. His father Murty was there too.I was told that George died around 1862-1864 in the Civil War, at which time William went to stay for a while with Rachel Shepard`s brother Garland. William returned to Vandalia,Fayette co. Ill. where he married Mary Francis Peters. They had several children in Ill. then moved to Benton Co. Arkansas . William was a minister and built Churches. He and Mary are burried at Thornsbury Church Cemetery in Washington CO,Arkansas. This is one of the Churches that he built. ANY ONE WITH MORE iNFORMATION ?
