It's almost Memorial Day weekend! Did you know that one of the women who inspired Memorial Day lived in Walla Walla? After the Civil War, Emily R.L. Norris Langford proposed a “Decoration Day” every spring to place flowers on the graves of soldiers. The tradition became known as Memorial Day in 1870 when Congress proclaimed May 30th a national holiday to remember those who died while serving their country. Several years later, Emily and her husband relocated from the East Coast to Walla Walla. She died in 1880 and is buried in Walla Walla’s Mountain View Cemetery.
