This is such a good story about the Houpt building. When I was in that area several years back I drove into Palestine and did photograph the Houpt building from the outside. I am a Houpt with ancestors who were at one point in Sullivan Co. IND. I had little time, but was not aware that there was a shop in the building. This may have been around 2000 - 2003.

I would love to hear some of the local Houpt stories. Do you know if your friend who owns the gift shop has e-mail capabilities? If she does, perhaps you could ask if she would be willing to communicate with some of us Houpt descendants. I live on the west coast, so doubt I will be returning any time soon.

By the way I do own one of those Houpt cookie cutters.
Thanks. Jean

From the "Illinois Historical Crawford County Biograpical" published 1909; pg. 727.
FRYE, D. E.
[paragraph 2]
Among those who have attained very satisfactory results is D. E. Frye, on Section 3, Montgomery Township. Mr. Frye was born in New Hebron, Crawford County, January 5, 1865, a son of HAMILTON FRYE, who was himself a native of Virginia, who came to New Hebron when a young man. He was married in Crawford County to Sarah C. Buzzard, a daughter of Samuel Buzzard, a prosperous farmer of the county. Hamilton Frye and wife were parents of the following children: Louis, Palmer, Ella, Charles, Edward, Allen (deceased) and D. E., all of whom were born in the county. When Hamilton Frye first located at New Hebron, he entered the employ of a merchant as clerk in a general store, eventually bought a home and died Repulican, but frequently voted for the best man according to his judgement in county and township affairs.
D. E. Frye was reared and educated in Crawford County, and when his mother, who was early left a widow, married John Senor Wesley, the family moved three miles west to Flat Rock, locating on a farm. [the rest of the article is about D. E. Frye]

I have 6 letters he sent to families while in the war and from buddies sent to him during that time period. I have been frantically looking for anything on any of our Harbison family. My Grandmother (dad's mother) was Emma Belle Harbison. I know very little about that side of the family, mainley what I can recall hearing from their converstions. This is a fantastic find.
Am looking for information on Hampson Fry who was born in Virginia in 1831 and died in Crawford County, Illinois. He is buried with his wife, Sarah C. Bussard Fry, in the New Hebron Cemetery, Crawford County, Illinois. I have a letter from him to his mother, who may have been Rebecca Lindamood Fry, then of Henry County, Indiana and formerly of Rockingham County, Virginia. His father may have been Samuel Fry of same. I have a possible tintype of him in a Civil War uniform. His cemetery listing has CW by it, and the letter from his is written on stationary with a portrait of Gen. J.C. Fremont, a Union General on it. The letter is not about the war, but was written in Oct. of 1862 or 1863. Any information appreciated.

I fear that with his passing, Rebecca's obit, if I ever find it, will not tell me the names of her parents. Stifle, a pioneer of Crawford county, who had lingered in illness and blindness for several months past, passed to his reward at his home north of town Friday. Funeral services were held from the house, and interment in the Wilkin cemetery Saturday. The deceased leaves a companion and several children to mourn his demise. Consolations to the bereaved.

She was born in Ill. in 1833 and died in Crawford Co. Ill. May 3, 1906. She is buried in Wilkens Cemetery in Crawford Co. She married John E. Stifle Dec 26, 1853 in Crawford Co. There is no record of her death in the county clerk's office. The census records say her parents are from Ky. I want to know her ancestry and why she was living with the Barlows.

My friend has a antique shop in the former Houpt Shop on
Main Street in Palestine. Around 7 years ago most of the inside was a huge empty dark hole from a fire. She and the
owner a folk artist with a shop in the other half used a lot
of hard work and made it a pretty shop. They found Houpt
crates, cutters and displayed them in the shop. There is a
picture of the employees in front of a Houpt Truck. A couple of older local women came in talking of when they worked there. Also found during the clean up was a lot of
old sheet music. We found out that the Houpts were a musical family. They played many insturments and sold sheet
music as a side line. At local auctions and garage sales the Houpt cutters sometime come up for sale, once in awhile
on online auctions too. If you get to Palestine, IL come into Wonderland Antiques and tell Phyllis your a Houpt I am sure she would show you her collection and tell you the stories of the Houpts that others told her.

Sincerely,
Teri
Carnton-Carrentan Dixon was in 1820-30-40 census of Orange Co. Indiana. Married 1822 Rachel Williams, she denounced marriage outside the church in 1823. Which tells me Carrentan wasn't a Friends Church member.
He bought the Crawford Co. ILL land in 1836, son, William Dixon b. 1839 Ill. shows in 1840 Orange Co. Ind. census with family. So with that, it show the family moved back to Orange Co. by 1840.
I found the Crawford Co. land records and it shows sec's and acres of land but without telling if it was sold when they moved away.
Does anyone show all the Dixon's that came from North Carolina in 1815?
John Dixon b. 1755 d. 1823 Orange Co. In. First m. Rebecca Johnson 1780 NC d. abt.1798 children John Dixon, Rebecca Dixon, Simon Dixon and poss. Carnton, Carrington Carrentan Dixon.
Married Ruth Dix Massey 1799 several children moved to Orange Co. In. 1815.
Need list of Dixon's that came at that time. Carnton Dixon would have been 18 at that time.

He was born February 3, 1898. He married my grandmother and moved to Oklahoma. We never knew why they left that area as the were both raised there. It seemed as if there was some event that they never talked about.
