My family history shows two brothers of my Randorf great grandfather going to US. They were Carl Randorf and Martin Randorf. I haven't been able to locate where they went. I thought maybe Illinois as their sister (Anna Ruge) was there. Does Jeanne know the name of her ancestor who migrated from Holstein and approx year? There are many descendants of another Randorf family in North America. Those Randorf immigrants arrived there around 1850, didn't come from Holstein and appear to be not connected to my line. Is it possible for Jeanne to contact me at warrain71@hotmail.com? I have lots of German family history. Thanks for the contact.

I've got a friend, Jeanne Randorf, that would be interested in your query. Her father was Carl and grandfather was was Charles. She grew up in Illinois, USA. Her father said that they were descendants coming from Holstein, Germany

You might find the approximate date of your postcard by giving a scan of it to an expert--try Google.

Good Luck!

The Calvary plot was purchased in 1868. These were Irish.

The record does not site date of death. The year would be apprx. 1856-1860 .

Hi Brenda,

I have searched thru what records I have, and also on a few web sites but I am not finding any information on Ann McCourt and John Gemmell.

It will be hard to find information going back that far. I think you've done a great job getting back to the early 1800's as it is!! I tried looking at sites that might have information going back that far --- Griffiths valuations and such. It appears the surname Gemmell is found in County Antrim and of course, McCourt is too. If they went to Scotland -- many people from Northern Ireland did since it was and is close by, you may see if you can find any other information about them there. (Church records??) It appears the Gemmell name is more common in Scotland. If you look on the familysearch web site most of the Gemmells are from Scotland.

I don't know if I have been much help. I wish you luck with your search.

Kathy

Re: How can I find name of tavern at 16th & Western?

The first thing you need to estimate is the years he owned the place. The you can look through old Chicago directories (some of which are here: http://www.chicagoancestors.org/#tab-tools ) in the business category of saloons. But there was Prohibition from 1920 through 1933, so there wasn't any such category as saloons during those years.

Then, if you see a listing for a place near 16th and Western with a name that sounds familiar, you could search through the Chicago Tribune archives website: http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/chicagotribune/advancedsearch.ht... and see if any stories with that name are available. Or search google for the name. Try a search with the name of the saloon and your great grandfather's last name.

BBC looking for relatives of Dr Lloyd Augustus Hall - eminent chemist

To whom it may concern.

I am working on a new BBC documentary and am looking for any relatives of the eminent chemist Dr Lloyd Augustus Hall (June 20, 1894 - January 2, 1971). Dr Hall contributed to the field of food preservation and amassed 59 US patents in his lifetime.

In 1919 he married Myrrhene Newsome and I think they adopted two children Dorothy and Kenneth. He was born in Elgin, Illinois and died in Pasadena, California.

We are looking to celebrate this man's achievements and would be very keen to speak to any of his relatives or even anyone that knew him. There is no requirement to appear in any programme. I would be grateful if anyone with information could get in touch on rebecca@plumpictures.co.uk or 02071846777.

Regards

Rebecca

I also think a lot will depend on the years. Take a look at the Chicago History Museum's website. They created a database with information on building permits cited in the American Contractor magazine from 1898 through 1912.

http://www.chicagohs.org/research/resources/architecture

Try putting in your gg grandfather's name and see if it turns up. However if your gg grandfather rented, it won't help.

I do not believe the James Parker Smith you referred to is your relative. The James Parker Smith you referred to (he was actually a "Jr.") was my gr-gr-grandfather. He was born in Maine in 1828 , carried on in the shipbuilding business from his father in Maine, migrated to Chicago, and was the designer of the ill-fated "Vernon", which sank killing all aboard but the cabin boy in 1887.

Hi
My name is Bill Ryan. The Casper Lauer from Chicago was my gg grandfather. He was the son of Franz (Francois) Lauer and Anne Marie Rohr of Bliesbruck, Lorraine. They came to the US and settled in the Buffalo area in 1832. Franz had a brother Casper who married Catherine Hollander in Bliesbruck 10/26/1811. Their son Martin was born 11/26/1827. He He married Anne Marie Donner in Niagara 1/11/1853. Martin died in Niagara 6/28/1872. I have a lot of information on the Lauers back to Clas Lauer who was born about 1610. I also have some information on the descendants of Martin Lauer. I would be happy to share information e-mail me at Billryan42@verizon.net

Born 1936, which I think should be about right. I do not see any census records or marriage records, etc, though. Any suggestions? I feel like i could weed out if this is her if I knew what to do with the death record info...
