Erik August Eriksson (or Jakobsson) back and forth from Sweden to Chicago. Double life?

Erik August Eriksson (maybe used Jacobson or Jakobsson) b. 2 Oct 1867 from Gotland (island) Sweden is recorded as going to Chicago several times.
It's hard to know when he went back to Sweden, but then went back to Chicago again.

Married 8 Nov. 1894 in Gotland, Sweden.

Dates that he went from Sweden to Chicago:
2 Nov. 1898, left Gotland, Sweden, arrived 9 Nov. 1898
22 Sept 1917 arrived Ellis Island, NY
17 Sept 1923 left Gotland Sweden for North America - widowed.

When he arrived at Ellis Island in 1917, there is a notation that he had been in Chicago Illinois from 1905 to 1907, previously.
In 1917 he is going to a friend Johan (John) P. Hedman. 5926 Elizabeth Street, Chicago. Johan P. Hedman was also from the island of Gotland.

What was he doing? Working? Leading a double life?
He went back to Sweden eventually, and died there in 14 Aug. 1954 at Gotland.

I don't know what resources there are in Chicago, so I'd appreciate any help.
