I looked on the "Secretary of State" Illinois website (under Departments, then Archives, then Search databases, then Deaths 1916 - 1950.) This might be your man. William J. Roy, 2 May 1946, Decatur, Macon Co. He would have been pretty old but... Decatur is not so far from Coles Co. Maybe he was living with relatives there.
