I'm not related to the Hoppers. Nellie Anderson Fletcher Fletcher Hopper is my 1st cousin 2x removed--she and my grandfather were cousins. Nellie's parents were Melissa Vannoy and Elijah Anderson. Melissa is my great grandmother's sister. Nellie's life was rather interesting--and I actually found living Fletcher relatives but no information yet received. She was widowed by husband #1, she divorced #2 (brother of #1) and Hopper was #3. I'm assuming it was Jacob E. Hopper--her Portland obit says J.E.--but I know he had a brother James--who was listed in Portland in a census. Do you have any record of which Hopper she married?

I think her husband was Jacob E Hopper--found him listed as single in Washington County in 1940. She died in Idaho 1934, but the Idaho Archives could not find a death certificate for her. Sometimes I've found that death certificates were transferred with the body when it was sent to another state--she is interred in Portland, Oregon--but it isn't in the Oregon Archives records either. There was a brief obit in the Portland paper, but no mention of where she died. Jacob's parents (father was Moses) were in Portland, OR in 1930 before they were married. Think I will just put this one to bed unless someone has more information on Jacob E. Hopper of Cambridge! Thanks for the reply.

There were and are lots of Hoppers in Washington County, ID. My father grew up there and had lots of Hopper friends. I even went to college, 1957-64, with several Hoppers from the area.

I expect she was visiting. Not really that old when she died.

Paul

Jan, I am interested in both. My husband recently discovered at the age of 68 that he was adopted. His birth mother was Lilly Gigger Merrill, Lois' sister. My husband was born in Cambridge, ID but his birth certificate does not mention a hospital in Cambridge so we are trying to figure that out too. I can't believe there were too many hospitals there in 1943, but maybe he wasn't born in a hospital. Through the US directories online there was a reference to Lois working as a waitress at The Frontier so thought I would see if anyone had any information such as address for her and the restaurant. Is it still there? Am really trying to track down the birth father who we believe lived in Cambridge or near there during early 1940s. Lilly gave my husband up for adoption (we now have that paperwork) but there is no mention of a father. The man who adopted him (Frank Thrasher) owned some property there in early 40s and possibly met Lilly there. My husband's stepmother recently told him that she thought Frank (deceased) was his real father so I thought I would see if I could figure out where Lilly lived in late 1942 and early 1943 and also where Frank lived during that time period. This is probably like looking for a needle in a haystack but thought I would try.

We were told by Lilly's daughter that Lilly lived with Lois in Cambridge.

I hope I haven't confused you too much.
Thank you.
For a few years between 1920 and 1950, Claude Carpenter and other family members either owned or operated a dairy farm near Weiser. Dates needed to locate family members as of a certain date. If they owned it, there should be a deed; if they operated for someone else, local memories may be more difficult. The Gutridge tree shows his birth in 1918, which is probably better for the family.

The building pictured at the link provided by the other, with no additional information is now used by the Snake River Heritage Center. It is only a museum, only open from 1-4 on Thurs/Saturdays June 1 to Sept 1. So, don't expect them to do research.
The link identifies the school was devastated by the Depression, the assets sold to benefit the College of Idaho and Whitman College and the school used by Weiser School District until 1967.

The Great Depression last from about 1929 to late 1930's to early 1940's.

This link, last paragraph tells the final date as the Institute:
http://payettecounty.info/marlow/changentimes.html
The Idaho Industrial Institute was founded October 20, 1899 by E. A. Paddock, Jane Slocum and Thomas Maryott. In 1915 it was renamed the Intermountain Institute. Because of its excellence, students found it was an alternative to public school. It had impressive classrooms and dormitories, its own print shop, meat and smoke shop, broom factory, dairy farm and students farmed 1200 acres of irrigated land. The school was supported by donations, until depression days. It closed its doors in 1933. Most of its buildings are still standing.

So, if your parents met there, it "probably" was after 1933, as Richard was only 15, June was 11. Based on the above, the school was used by the Weiser School District until 1967. So, they "probably" met there while the Weiser School District was using it.

I would suggest an attempt for information from the school district. Many school districts do have an administrator that has access to historic information they use for programs. I have done some history work for a local district.
http://www.weiserschools.org/
I can NOT guarantee any success with this route.

--additional information---
The National Register of Historic Places, identifies the Institute, it has "significant years" of 1907 and 1929, "Period of Significance: 1925-1949, and 1900 to 1924,
http://www.nationalhistoricalregister.com/id/Washington/vaca...

From:
http://washington.idgenweb.org/intermtninst.htm
The school was established in 1899 to provide rural children an opportunity to attend high school. Beardsley Hall, completed in 1907, housed 40 girls on the second and third floors, a dining hall in the basement, the school’s chapel on the first floor, and a gymnasium in the attic. Slocum Hall was built in 1909 at a cost of $30,000. It housed a swimming pool in the basement, and was the boys’ dormitory. It also held the Institute’s library and reading room until the Carnegie Library was completed in 1919. Hooker Hall, which was the Institute’s administration and classroom building, was completed in 1924 at a cost of 100,000, and also contained a modern auditorium and woodworking shops in the basement. Billings Memorial Gymnasium was the last structure added to the campus, built in 1929 for $40,000. It contained a swimming pool and basketball court.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Cheryl, I do believe that would be the one. The obituary called it the Weiser City Ledger, so now I see that was a typo in the obit. It's great to finally have a date and confirm name of newspaper. Thanks so much.
Pam Smith
Dallas, OR
Thank you so much for all that information. I do have an obituary - our Archivist, Tom Braniger found it. That is what led me to Weiser, ID. Here it is;

Independence West Side, Friday, December 4, 1891, 2:4
J.H. Stine, editor of the Whiteson Advance, was shot last Sunday afternoon by H.C. Cook, section boss on the narrow gauge road. Cook then shot himself twice. Both men were killed instantly. Stine and Cook and a German section hand had been to Amity on foot, a distance of three miles from Whiteson. When about half way back, on their return, Stine walked about ten feet in advance of the others and Cook quickly, without warning, drew a pistol and fired at Stine, striking him in the back of the neck, breaking the spinal column. Turning the pistol on himself, Cook fired one shot into his breast, missing the heart about two inches. He then placed the pistol to his temple and fired a second shot, through his brain. The section hand, thinking his time had also come, started to run at the first shot, and did not stop until he had got to Whiteson. A squad of men returned and found both men dead. No cause is known for the deed, except it be a sudden fit of mental aberration. Cook had been acting in a singular manner for several days. The section hand with them said he had taken but two drinks of whisky during the day, and showed no signs of intoxication. The men were good friends, and always on the best of terms. They were talking pleasantly at the time of the shooting. They were both about 48 years of age and veterans of the civil war. Nothing is known of Cook’s family relations. A note dated November 29 was found under Cook’s pillow, indicating that he premeditated his death. In the note Cook leaves to Mrs Garvin, a widow with whom he boarded, all his personal effects, and asks her to give him a decent interment. He also tells her not to mourn for him, as he is of no use. Cook, of late, had been excessively despondent on account of certain stories of his immorality told about him by men living at Whiteson. He told Mrs Garvin yesterday morning that he believed he would blow his brains out. She tried to persuade him otherwise. She accounts for his killing Stine on the ground that it would keep the Grand Army from hearing of the stories told about him, as Stine was also a member. Cook bore a good reputation for honesty and integrity. He was unmarried. J.H. Stine was born in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, in February, 1847. Was at one time an Odd Fellow, and was also once a member of the Methodist church. At one time he was commander of the Grand Army post in Independence. He was buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery near this place last Wednesday by the GAR members, Rev J.R.N. Bell officiating. Mr Stine first learned his trade as a printer upon the Clearfield Republic. He was a great man to found newspapers. He always printed neat, clean papers. We give a complete list of those he actually started on this coast. Weiser City Ledger, Weiser City, Idaho; Heppner Gazette, Heppner, Or; Grant’s Pass Courier, Grant’s Pass, Or; Brownsville Informant, Brownsville, Or, afterwards the Lebanon Express, Lebanon, Or; Willamette Valley Tribune, of Independence, Or, afterward the Monmouth Democrat, Monmouth, Or; Whiteson Advance, Whiteson, Or; and the West Side, Independence, Or, established in November, 1883. With sorrow we bid adieu to our friend, and tender to the sorrowing wife our tenderest sympathies.

The widow was Mrs. Mary A. Moran Deming Stine. He married her 11 Jun 1884 in Polk Co., Oregon. She filed for a pension based on his Civil War service - date 6 Apr 1892.

Thanks again,
Pam Smith
Dallas, OR

Pam,
As you identified, there is little to nothing of information about this guy. I did a number of searches in various sites.

His burial at Hilltop Cemetery, Independence, Polk Co, OR
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=st...;
There is a Harry M. Stine, 1897-1921 in the cemetery, but unknown if related.

The National Park Service listing of soldiers and sailors of the Civil War only identifies him with 2 PA Cav, Company F, private. There was also a Jacob H. Stine, 13th PA Cav, Company B.

The Oregon Secretary of State
http://genealogy.state.or.us/ identifies:
Coroner's Report on J.H. Stine, 1891, Yamhill County (also includes a H.C. Cook).
Divorce, J.H. Stine vs Jennie, 1884 in Marion County.

I checked a number of various sites, books, government, etc, without any more success.

I don't know what information you already have on this guy. In 1891, a "true" obit was a newspaper story about the rich/famous, infamous or victims of crime or accident. An obituary as we know today was more like our death notices. I don't know if this is the "obit" you have. I have seen many "obits" on persons that glorify the background of the deceased. A person that "started" newspapers, may have been someone that worked in a newspaper in the early years of its publication. A lot like many today write in a job resume...

The Weiser Signal-American
http://www.smalltownpapers.com/newspapers/newspaper_detail.p...
shows an 1882 year of publication.

The link provided by the other poster isn't working, which isn't unusual.

There is no Upper County Report, there is a "News Reporter" in Cambridge, also "The Upper County News Reporter" in Tabor, ID, same phone number of 208-257-3515. It is not likely this paper was initiated by Stine.

The phone numbers provided did not show the area code for Idaho "208"

The Snake River Heritage Center is a museum, only open from 1-4 on Thurs/Saturdays June 1 to Sept 1. So, don't expect them to do research.

Thank you for reiterating all that information--yes, I do have it, but it's good to look over all the same. :)

I can very well try calling the cemetery over there. I just didn't think the cemetery would have records pertaining to obituaries, at least from that era, but that the mortuary would be the one to have that information. But then, maybe the cemetery would have record of the funeral home used, if it were to still exist. Normally the death notice printed in the paper would give the funeral home.

Obituary look-ups: Augustus and Carrie Watkins

I am trying to locate obituaries for the following family members who passed away in Weiser, Idaho.

Augustus Elias "Aug" Watkins was born 7 June 1860 in Delaney, Madison County, Arkansas, and he died 28 May 1948 in Weiser and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery. I'd love to locate his obit.

Likewise, I haven't been able to locate an obituary for his wife, Carrie May Allen Watkins, who is buried with him. Carrie Watkins was born 1 September 1875 in Missouri, and she died in September of 1969 in Weiser. I haven't been able to confirm the specific day of death, but I believe she may have died September 11 of that year. Certainly September of 1969.

At the time of Carrie's death, survivors included children Walter, Dora, Reatha, Opal, and Wesley.

I appreciate anyone looking so very much. Thank you.

Weiser Newspaper

I'm working on Civil War Vets buried in Polk Co., Oregon. The obit of one Jacob H. Stine, Civil War Vet from PA tells that he was a newspaperman who made a career of starting newspapers - one of these was the Weiser City Ledger, Weiser, Idaho.
Can anyone tell me when this would have been? Jacob H. Stine apparently moved around and missed census. From Idaho he moved to Heppner, OR, then Grant's Pass, OR, Lebanon, OR and finally to Independence, OR where he was killed in 1891.
Pam Smith
Dallas, OR

I've been told this is not the right person as he is listed with a different set of parents according to the headstone shown on Find a Grave. Now I am really confused as to where this information is from. And if he isn't the right one; where is the real one. The names and dates seem to be the same. Does anyone know the facts?
Not sure if you are still looking, but I'm also looking for information on Calla (Macomb) Solders. I know she is my grandfather's Mother. Calla married Noel P. Solders and as I understand she died at an young age and my great grandfather Noel raised their kids. Calla had two boys, Earl Noel Solders (my grandfather) and Claude Solders. Calla also had a daughter Neva (Solders) Fields. I have much more information, just let me know. If you do have any additional information on Calla Macomb, that would be great.
