My mother-in-laws maiden name was SMITH. She was born and raised on DRY CREEK, ADA CO., BOISE. She always maintained that SMITH'S FERRY was owned and operated by her grandfather or perhaps GGrandfather Smith, thus the name Smith's Ferry. What I need to find out is if anyone has information about the early origens of Smith's Ferry and the history of it's beginnings and the Smith who owned it. Any information may be helpful. My husband and I live in Cascade and pass by Smith's Ferry often and I can't help but wonder if Russell really is a descendent of this Mr. Smith. He sure claimes it's true...but I want proof! :)

I and my husband bought the property on which the old Valley County jail is located in Cascade, Idaho. We know that the old jail was built about the time Cascade became the county seat, about 1916. I was born and raised in Valley County, Cascade. My parents, Burl and Freda Allen (Potts) were born and raised in Valley County. I know that my paternal grandad, John Allen (Jack) even spent some time in the old jail long ago. Still I know vertually nothing about the history of the jail. I would love to know some stories about the 'guests' who spent time there. I would be interested in knowing who built it. If anyone has stories they would like to share with me I would so appreciate it.

For all those interested, the Valley County Genealogy Society has a new email address. You may email us with a general Idaho research question and we'll do our best to give you an answer. However, we do not answer specific research questions - we refer them out to an Idaho researcher, former Idaho State Historical Society, Genealogy Dept. manager, Gene Williams. We do publish a newsletter twice a year which contains a moderate amount of information on early Valley County people. It comes as a package deal when someone joins our society. Current dues are $10.00.

I haven't found much else. I also know that he is referred to in the book Idaho loners. If anyone has the book and would be willing to scan pages for me to see, I would appreciate it. I want to see what the book has before I buy it. There is also a book called The Middle Fork, that apparently has info about Earl and I think his parents Sarah and Joseph Parrott.
How McCall Idaho got its name-Thomas McCall Story

I obtained an article from the Idaho Statesman Newspaper written by Thomas Mackall's daughter-in-law, Ennis McGee in 1939 and 1940.
This is the story of Thomas Mackall/McCall (1841-1930)and his wife Louisa Ferguson (1842-1927)and their trek to Idaho about 1890. This the line (going back)Thomas (1841) > Benjamin (1818) > Thomas (1791) > Benjamin (1758/1764) > James (1738).

The story came as a negative microfilm copy so I had to transcribe it. I left all of the wording and punctuation exactly as it was written in the newspaper except for a couple of name errors that I noted.

I will be happy to email the 18 page story (MS Word) to anyone who is interested.
If you want Thomas and Louisa's descendant report I'll be glad to include that also.
Let me know at: helenmel@pgtv.net

Mel King
I beleive that this is my grandfathers brother in law and I would like to find more information about him or his family. He also had a daughter Ella but I didn't see her on the census. I've been told his wife Mabel (Johnson) died in 1911 but I haven't been able to confirm this. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

BURDICKS in Roseberry

I'm looking for any information on William Noah Burdick and his family. He & his wife Ina Maude Yenne were married in Boise in Sept 1907. Their first daughter, Agnes, was born in 1908 in Nampa, ID and their other daughter, my grandmother, Myrtle was born 14 Mar 1912 in Roseberry. They had come from Illinois and I'm wondering what made them choose Roseberry? It's a beautiful area but I don't think they stayed long. The winters must have been to harsh. They went back to Boise, with Myrtle getting married in 1934 in Great Falls, MT. What would have brought them to Roseberry? Free land?

Margie
Helena, MT
steliie@aol.com

TULL

My great-grandparents, RICHARD D. TULL and AMY (TINY) TAYLOR TULL, came to Long Valley, Idaho 1886-1889. According to family records, they attempted to prove up a homestead in Long Valley, and DICK TULL worked as a sawyer in the logging camps. Dick and Tiny Tull had been married in Lane Co. Oregon in 1877. They had five children: (1) DORA A. TULL b 1878, d 1881 Oregon; (2) SIDNEY WILLIAM TULL, b. 22 Nov. 1882, m. Dollie Leona KELTY, d. 17 Nov. 1944 CA; (3) RICHARD CRAIG TULL, b 20 Mar. 1884, m. Mable OVERMAN in Walla Walla WA 1 Nov. 1905, d. 7 Dec. 1969, buried Milton-Freewater OR; (4) FRED CLEVELAND TULL (my grandfather), b. 5 Aug. 1886 Weston, OR, m. Myrtle E. BONE 13 Sept. 1908, d. 24 June 1971 Prosser, WA; (5) ADA L. TULL b 2 Feb. 1889 Valley Co. ID, m. Edward H. EGGERS 15 Mar. 1911, d. 25 Jan. 1919.

Does anyone have a record of this family in Valley County in the 1880s? There could be divorce records and a remarriage of Dick TULL. They must have filed for a homestead, although they did not remain in the region after Dick and Tiny Tull split up.
Miles Family

My father Nelson Sidney Miles was born in Cascade, Valley Co, ID 22Jul1942. His parents were Oliver "Jay" Miles, and Christina Carolina Youngquist. Dad had said they left Idaho for Oregon in 1947-48. His two oldest brothers John Leland, and Robert J stayed in the area. John married Mae Ann Carrico, and Robert married Mary Donna Cantrall. Uncle Bob and Aunt Mary are buried in Cascade. I never knew Mae Ann. I do not know if they divorced, or if she passed away. My Grandfather Jay was a carpenter, and he may have farmed in Idaho. My father's sister Evelyn Alma was born in Donnelly, as well as his twin brothers Elbern and Eldon Miles. The twins died at birth. I'm trying to find any information or person who may have known the Miles family. I am uncertain when they moved to Idaho. Any help will be appreciated. Thankyou. Carolyn Olson

I finally made a breakthrough! I called the McCall Police department and they are working with Valley County Sheriff's department. She is going to try to find out all she can. She gave me the date of death (8/14/82) and even had her parents names!
So maybe now I will be able to work my way back up the tree!
Aricka

Hi,

Because this is a fairly recent event, you might try contacting a lawyer (hopefully at no fee) who could direct you to the best sources. I suggest (from my Valley County phone book) the name of Robert H. Remakulus, a long-time resident of Valley County. His phone is (208) 382-4267 and address is: 104 W. Cascade, Cascade, Idaho 83611.

Also you might get some action from the local Valley County newspaper files "The Long Valley Advocate" whose web-site is:http://www.longvalley.com/news/index.html

Best of success.
Wes
