Hi.
I have been searching for my relative called Kalle Ropponen. He moved to USA from Finland in 1911 and last information of him is from years 1917-1918 World War II draft registrants, where he was located in Shoshone county. His name has been written wrong but I am quite sure it is he, Charles Rabbanan, Robbanan but real name Kalle Ropponen.

Can anyone have any information of him? Maybe a relative to him or some name in some record. I have no idea if he has moved away from Shoshone or what has happened to him. He was declared dead here in Finland in the age of 90 with no proof of his dying or anything.
I would be very grateful to get any info of him.

Searching for any info on James Matthews (b.1886 in Carbondale, KS). He came from Broadwater County, MT (father Robert Matthews mined and ranched there) and worked in Burke, ID before 1907 time frame. In 1907, he married a Winnie Broderick from MT and moved back to Broadwater County. In 1911, he divorced Winnie and in 1912 he was living in Butte, MT where he married Jennie Wells. They had 2 children that were born in Challis, ID in 1914 and 1916. From 1917-1920 James and family lived in Ruston, WA and James worked at the ASARCO smelter as hoisting engineer (1918) and a stationary engineer (1920).
James Matthews totally disappeared around 1921 and I can't locate him anywhere (Jennie remianed in Tacoma, WA for the remainder of her life). Any ideas on where to look next? I have the mining/smelting connection and have also heard that he was a musician. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

John

if this is the right place. I have been trying to locate a friend of mine from high school. We were best friends. Her family never heard from her after the age of 18, altho they have looked everywhere for her. I don't know if you are actually in Shoshone County in Idaho, but I finally found her and I think she is in Pinehurst, Idaho. There is no phone number listed and I would really love to get hold of her. We have not seen each other since 1974. I would gladly give my phone number and name to anyone who might know:

Wanda F. Gonzales
Pinehurst, ID

We went to school at Butte High School in Butte, MT until I moved to Tucson, AZ which was in 1974. We kept in touch for a while even after she moved to South Dakota for a bit. But nothing since. I would sincerely love to speak to my old friend. Thank you!

Betty

In about 1890 the Lower Paragon Mine was located by Mr. Charles Tilden and others. Mr. Louis Stedman also located claims in the area. Mr. Stedman became the supertendant of the Paragon Mines. The parent company was known as The Chicago-London Mining Company. It was located at the fork of Prichard Creek and Paragon Gulch. Frank J. Renz was an investor and was said to have wired the mine for electricity and did some mechanical work at the site. He and his wife visited the site in Aug. of 1908.

Would appreciate conversation from anyone with knowledge of this mining opperation or anyone connected with it.
Regards,
Nancy

I am looking for a grave or information on a William F. Smith ( born abt 1866 Russia) who in the 1900 Census lived with his wife Josephine and his two daughters Clarice Jessie and Grace V. His wife is shown as a widow in 1920 living in Washington with her parents. In the 1900 Census they are living in Kellogg, Shoshone County, Idaho. I have no idea where to start with this. ANY help would be great! I am not familiar with Idaho at all. I live in Arizona. This man is part of a brick wall that we are trying to get broke down! Thanks! Sandy

Arthur Joseph Kramer

Looking for information on Arthur Joseph Kramer b May 24, 1907 Burke, Shoshone Co, Id. He died April 8, 1931 Portland
Oregon. His death certificate says his parents were possibly Samuel Profitt b Dec 17, 1877 and Jessie Bay b Nov 16, 1891.
Arthur Joseph Kramer was raised by Martha Ellen Buffington Kramer and her husband Peter Kramer. This must have been an
adoption. Is there anyone there who can help me locate the birth records or adoptions papers? Would there be any divorce documents in Shoshone County for Profitt and Bay? This Kramer family lived in Council Idaho from at least 1910 to 1920. I am also trying to locate Martha Ellen Buffington Kramers next husband who is Samuel James Stephens b October 4, 1876. Birthplace is listed as Canada, and he registered for the WWI draft in Shoshone Co Id. He married Martha Ellen Kramer sometime around 1920-1924 in Idaho and must have died or been divorced from Martha Ellen before 1946 when she
remarried. Any information welcome. Thanks Trudy Spanier

Does anyone know where in the world one would find out about someone who came to Wallace in about 1902 as a railroad conductor or brakeman? Our Grandpa ended up being the yardmaster during the 1910 fire but we can't trace anything about his origins the backside of his marriage in Wallace in 1903. He worked at the depot in town and also was a county deputy sheriff in the 1920's for Shoshone Co. We are stumped on how to find records in Wallace other than the birth, marriage, and death one. We have been to the Wallace Library and they have some good films of early news papers but can't find a place to find anything indexed.

Any one who has any ideas would be a hero in our eyes!
Best,
Tom and Linda Thank
Kettle Falls,
Washington

Family: Stagner

I am trying to trace a history for my grandfather who was adopted by one William Stagner, wife Elizabeth Hall Stagner, son Frank H. Stagner. My grandfather''s name was Everett Rhetts but was adopted as...Frank H. Stagner. According to an old letter found many years after his death in the Philippines, where he retired as an Army veteran from the Spanish American War, William Stagner and Elizabeth Hall's son, Frank died as a young child. Everett was then adopted by Stagner (Elizabeth was a step-brother to Everett). As he said in his letter, Wm Stagner wanted to stake him on some promising mining claims and since a claim in the name of his son, Frank, was due to 'bond' or as I understand, leave his possession, he adopted Everett with the name of his son to keep the claim in the family. Records supposedly are recorded in Wardner, Idaho. He mentioned a strike in Eagle, Idaho but I note that seems quite a distance to the south and looks more like farming territory rather than mining gulches. All this took place around 1887. Is there another old city near Wardner formerly named Eagle City? All named in this query originally emigrated from Missouri after the Civil War to the (now) Montana gold strike area near Townsend, Montana. Gold was discovered there by former Confederate officers, imprisoned in a final battle, who had been forcefully exiled from Missouri toward the end of the war.

Thanks to all for any information.

James Ziglar was b. abt 1832 in North Carolina or Virginia, son of Jane Jones (b. 16 March 1815, Virginia) and Ziglar (b. abt 1802 nr. Salem N.C.) After the death of Mr Ziglar in 1843, Jane Jones Ziglar and her children lived with her father, widower Charles Jones where they are found in the 1850 Henry Co. Va.
Hello Alice, I'm sorry I don't have accurate death dates for James Ziglar and his wife Susan Minter. James is in the 1850 US Census for Henry Co., Va., age 17, a tobacconist. He moved to Knox Co., then Lewis Co. Mo. Susan is in the US Census 1900, living in Idaho, widowed. Of the siblings, Charles J Ziglar is an ancestor of the well-known "Zig" Ziglar, descendants are still in Alabama. Susan died young- probably in childbirth, in Henry Co. My husband is a descendant of Mary Jane and Elbert Henry Nunn (his gggrandparents). I lost some info recorded in the last month or two from a virus- I'm trying to piece some of it back together , will post again if I find something of interest to you.

Hecla Mining Co, Burke, Delehanty, IWW, labor organizing, 1910s, Rutland County VT

Seeking information on my grandfather John Delehanty, b. 1886, West Castleton, Rutland Co., VT. His 1917 draft registration card has him in Burke, Shoshone Co, Idaho, working for Hecla Mining Co, living with wife (Bridget, maiden name McDonough) and child (Lester Delehanty). His family back in Rutland Co VT were slate workers (quarrymen, slate polishers, etc), so he probably went to Idaho and worked what he knew best, mining. Also, I'm more generally interested in mining life in places like Hecla in 1910s -- I know the IWW / Wobblies were very active in mining and lumbering camps, there was a big strike in 1913-14 I believe, and I'd like to know any books or other resources that might shed some light on my grandfather's life in Idaho / Montana mines in 1910s. Many thanks, MJS

Has anyone any information about the following Swedish/Finnish emigrant family in Mullan?

Arthur (Tyyre or Thyre) Eriksson Palovaara b. 1891 in Pajala in northern Finnish-speaking Sweden.
His wife Laina (b. ca 1896 in Finland) and their daugther Elsie (b. ca 1918 in Mullan, Idaho) is registered at Ellis Island Aug. 19 1922 when returning to Mullan after a visit in Sweden.

I belive I have found Elise (Elsie Erickson) 1930 as "lodger" in the houshold of a Ida Manska born in Finland (45 yo) but I have not found any traces of the parents in the 1930 Census.

I hope anyone might have information about this family!

Needless to say I'd be very grateful for any help or tip you can give.

best regards
Håkan Bergström
Brussels

Julius Joseph Morrison/Marsden

I am trying to find information on a man who died as Joseph Marsden on August 4, 1922 in Herrick, Idaho. He was born Julius Joseph Morrison on Novembr 16, 1878 somewhere in Washington State. According to the census of 1900 both of his parents were born in Switzerland. He married a Daisy Ann Stewart and was living in Creston, WA in the 1900 census. He was one of five men in the posse that killed Harry Tracy, an scaped convict from Oregon. They had a son, Bert Lloyd, in 1902 but otherwise their trail goes cold until 1920 when he is listed as living in Herrick, ID. He was murdered on August 4, 1922 in a dispute over money with a Joseph Farri, an Italian employee. Marsden's widow was a woman with equally confusing names. She was born Maud Myrtle Martin, was married to an E.M. Crawford, and changed her name at some point to Margretta. If anyone knows ANYTHING new could you please contact me?!
Hi,
I found an old family photo from 1913 but half of it was torn. The town was Wardner Idaho. Hoping to learn the names of historic photo studios in Wardner from that time period and if possible the location of any of their negatives. Had good luck with Spokane and Bismarck studios in that regard.
Thanks for any help,
Stephanie

I know there was a newspaper in Harrison for some years. Is it the same paper that is republished each picnic as the Harrison Searchlight? Is it archived as well some where? Any information about the location of the papers will be much appreciated. Thanks, Joan D'Andrea

Today I found an old photo among my grandmother's papers. It shows a man and a woman with a child, in front of a car (lorry?) and on the door of the car is written:
HANSY
COPPER & GOLD MINES
AVERY IDAHO
They are out in the nature, some clothes (sheets) are hung up to dry.
On the back is written (in Norwegian): Sam Peterson and his wife.
Does anyone know of Hansy Copper and Gold Mines?
It's hard to say how old the photo is, maybe from the 1930's?

I am looking for information on a house fire that took place in Wallace, Idaho in the 1940's. My father and a sibling were playing with matches in a closet, and the fire started. The family name is Kirkland. Thank you. Wendy Marquart tdm3@lvcm.com

Please: Was Gem, Idaho in Shoshone County in 1902? If so, is there anyone who might be able to help me find an obit for a William WRIGHT who died about 22 Nov 1902 in Gem. Death was the result of a train accident of some sort, and so, I think there may have been something in the local newspaper. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Helen Louise Young

I am a Commissioner on the Idaho State Bar's Board of Commissioners, and will be President of the bar beginning in January 2005. Being just the third womant to hold that title, I've decided to do some significant research on the first woman lawyers in Idaho.

The first woman admitted to the bar in Idaho, on October 26, 1895, was Helen Louise Nichols Young. Helen was born in Michigan around 1864. She married Orville R. Young, a miner, on June 29, 1889 and together they lived in Osburn and Wallace, Idaho. Before that, she taught in public schools of Shoshone County in 1888. I know that Helen was an active "suffragist" - seeking the right of women to vote -- in 1895-96, but can't find out much more about her. She must have been a relatively "high profile" woman of her day, yet information about what she did in north Idaho -- let alone finding a picture of her -- seems impossible. According to census data, I know that she and Orville eventually separated some time before 1910, wihtout having had any children, and Helen ended up in Manhattan, NY by 1920 and the last reference I can find about her is in the 1930 census with her living in Manhattan. Orville died in Wallace on June 19, 1924, but I can't find a date of death for Helen (despite all my best efforts).

If you know anything about this pioneering woman lawyer, please let me know. And, if you can point me to a picture of her, I feel like I've hit the jackpot! I'm collecting this information for an event to honor the first 50 women admitted to the bar which will be held in Boise on March 10, 2005. Thanks for any help you can provide.

1920 newspaper article look up

I am the trying to locate the name and date of a newspaper that printed an article about a missing man from Mullen Idaho. I have a copy of the article but do not know the name of the paper for my sources. The headline was "REPORT MULLEN MAN IS MISSING" Kalle Kaapala (should be Haapala). Authorities notified did not reach destination in Pennsylvania. Did Kalle Kaapala who presumably left Mullen one morning in August, 1917 for Monessen, Pennsylvania in reality meet with foul play and is his body lying at the bottom of some abandoned prospect hole in the hills near Mullen?

This would have been my uncle. I am trying to find out if anyone ever mentioned the name of the relatives he was going to in Pennsylvania. It has been a mystery in my family for years. Is there any way that there might be copies of some old police files, original article in 1917 or a follow-up after 1920.

In a column to the left of the article is listed something called Todays Event's. One of the events states that the last installment on the 1920 federal income tax is due today. I would think that this would make the papers date June or July of 1920.

He was Postmaster when he died and upon his death my grandmother Ethel Weniger was appointed acting Postmaster. I would appreciate any info. Thanks, Ginny Hewett Stokes

My great-uncle, James Shelton, from Missouri, lived in Kellogg, Idaho for several years (approx. 1906-1911) and at some point (1907?) he was married to a Lillian Harding. They had a child (name & sex unknown) born 03/21/191 and died 07/29/1911. It is believed that the mother died either during or after childbirth or possibly after the death of the child. If so, they would be buried somewhere in the Kellogg vicinity. I have pics of the child as well as the mother & father if that would help anyone. If anyone can help me on this it would be greatly appreciated as we have limited information about this.
