Eva Mae Smith Burns, our loved and respected mother and grandmother, passed through the veil October 4, 2009.She was born August 26, 1922 in St. John, Idaho to Burnett and Mina Newhouse Smith. She married Odell W. Burns September 25, 1940 who preceded her in death in 1984. Eva was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and found joy in her service in the Primary, Young Women and the Relief Society. She worked and retired from the Utah State Tax Commission. She also served over 4,000 hours as a volunteer at the Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful. She often expressed the satisfaction and enjoyment she received from this experience and regretted that her health prevented her from continuing in this service. She will forever be loved and appreciated for many qualities that have influenced family and friends. Cancer robbed her of her mobility 13 years ago but did not make a difference in her good nature, kindness and her determination to ensure the comfort of all who visited. Throughout her life she was an example of goodness and always put others ahead of herself in selfless service. We will miss her sense of humor and ability to find joy in all her circumstances and to bring joy into the lives of those who knew her. She endured much adversity and never lost her faith in the Lord as she remained faithful, humble, submissive and resolved to press forward and make the best of every challenge. We will be eternally indebted for her sweet companionship, kindness and love as are the many she served and loved and who we believe embraced her arrival on the other side of the veil. She has many wonderful friends who have faithfully visited and who have been kind and helpful in transporting her to doctor appointments as well as shopping for her on many occasions. They have been an important part in making her wish to remain independent a reality. The family is most appreciative to them and to the wonderful care-givers at the Avalon Transitional Care Unit the past three months. Eva is survived by her children, Terry O. (Linda) Burns, Syracuse, Utah; and Dorathea (Dodie) (William) Bennett, Bozeman, Montana; sister, Nadine (Elmer) Peters, Evanston, Wyoming; nine grandchildren; and 22 1/2 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother, Wallace E. Smith; and sister, Mina Tegnell. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 9, 2009 at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main, where a visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Friday 12:45-1:45 p.m. prior to services. Interment-Farmington City Cemetery. Online guest book at www.russonmortuary.com
