Descendants of Elizabeth (Russell) Archibald - Reunion Sept 8, 2012

This year is the 150th anniversary of LDS Pioneer Elizabeth Russell Archibald's immigration to Utah.

Many people in Utah and Idaho are descended from Thomas and Elizabeth (Russell) Archibald. Thomas Archibald died in Scotland but Elizabeth Russell Archibald came to Wellsville with several of her children. Some went to Idaho and some went to Canada.

A family reunion for all descendants of Elizabeth Russell Archibald is being planned for Saturday, Sept 8, 2012 at the Wellsville, Utah bowery by cousin Brandon Sundeen. He is planning games for the younger children, sharing of family history info for the adults, followed by a memorial service at the Wellsville Cemetery. Food is POT LUCK. Bring your own lunch and all will share what they bring.

If you have any family heirlooms, photos, letters, etc.. pertaining to Elizabeth Russell Archibald or her immediate family, please bring them for viewing.

For more details contact Brandon Sundeen. Phone: 503-396-2178 OR email: brandonsundeen@gmail.com

Please help us get the word out. Pass this information on to all of your extended family so that they may attend if they are interested.

Does anyone know of the Wessels Family of the Cottonwood area? Herman Wessels was b. 1860 in Germany. He married in 1890 to Bernadine "Dena" (we don't know her maiden name). They had children including son, Albert William Wessels b. 1896 in Lincoln, KS. Herman died 8 Sept 1932 and Dena died on 21 Sept. 1945 at Greencreek, Idaho. We would very much like to find Dena's maiden name. Albert William Wessels m. Helena "Lena" Toennis. Her family was also from Cottonwood. Any help or advice will be appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to look and respond. I found him in the Free Press as you did and also in the Idaho County News, same death notice. I found an index for the Idaho State Journal that showed he had an obit in there on 22 June 1901. I am hoping that this might have some small clue so that I can prove his relationship to my 2gr grandfather. Once again, thanks for your time.
Barbara

Free Press: 13th JUN 1901

Phil PRATT, an old miner and prospector, was found dead in his cabin near the Blue Jacket last week by some cowboys who were passing. When found, a candle was burning in his room and the body was still warm. He was buried near his cabin.

cannot see anything in the 1900 census

Phil PRATT was listed in the Idaho County Free Press 13 June 1901 as being deceased in his cabin near Blue Jacket Mine above Kirkwood. He was also listed in the Idaho County "News". He was buried near his cabin, would land records have been recorded at that time?
Thanks for your time,
Barbara in Arizona

He died shortly after birth or at birth and the date would be between 1905 & 1915 he was born between my uncle and my dad. Anyway, I am related to the McLeans from grangeville and they moved to McCall after Freddie Lee's birth. again Thank you.. Happy searching Melva
I also wanted to mention that the person that put these listings on find a grave, took them from the Idaho County GenWeb site.(without permission)
The Lot/Block online at Genweb are the old format for this cemetery and are from the original plat books. The cemetery was originally laid out in random rows and made it hard to identify one row from another.
Thanks to the Idaho County Genealogical Society and the Cemetery district, they are in the process of adding new row markers to make it easier to find a grave.
The Lee Smith you are looking for does not sound like the one buried in Mt. Idaho, but here is the info just in case. (Mt. Idaho is a long way from Riggins, about 55-60 miles).
Mt. Idaho cemetery records show Lee Smith B. 2 Apr. 1860 D. 29 Jun 1948. Has a dbl stone with Daisy Smith, his wife. Most of the Smith family lived in Mt. Idaho for many years. There is a Thomas Lee Smith buried there as well B. 30 Jan 1910 D. 3 Jun 1989. I remember Tom well, as I grew up above Mt. Idaho.
There is a new cemetery book out for Mt. Idaho that is for sale by the local Genealogical Society. http://idaho.idgenweb.org/Books/MtIdaho.htm

Also, "if" there was an obituary it would definitely be in the Idaho County Free Press from Grangeville, as that was/is the local paper. If you have a death date I would be happy to look through the microfilm for an obit.

Almost all of the cemetery records for Idaho County are on the Idaho County Genweb site
http://idaho.idgenweb.org
The listings for Mt. Idaho are not updated online yet, but I have all of the new info and can look up any burial you are looking for.
I have looked in all my cemetery listings and do not find another Lee or Freddie Smith. I thought perhaps he was buried in Riggins, but do not see him there either. Sounds like perhaps there was a small family cemetery.
If you find out there was, please let me know and I will be happy to help locate it for you.

I apologize that I did not post a link to my tree. I will keep this in mind when I ask a query again. I don't use the boards very often.

My original request was to find people that may be on ancestry.com, that are related to this family...well just the descendants of Rudolph and Anna, since I really only know about my gg grandfather George's line.

I know about the find-a-grave sites for my ggg grandparents. I did not know about the tributes. There is another listing for "Bert" Smith too, it's the same as Herbert. Couldn't figure out why it wasn't changed the first time around.

VERY impressive family tree. When you post, you should post the link so volunteers having access via Ancestry can see the Big picture of the person(s) you seek:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/28199691/family

Find-a-grave has Rudolph and Anna identified with the grave of Herbert Bertrum (Bert) Smith. I don't know if this is your written tribute or that of another. Most tributes were composed by those persons that take gravestone photographs; but, this one has family information. I have found tributes on this site that are NOT accurate. I have found persons listed that were actually buried elsewhere.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=58...

Thank you for your response!
I am also wondering about Herbert and Anna now.
I have the number for the closest library to Kooskia, given to me in an email. I will probably be calling them to see if I can find any obits for Rudolph, Louise Anna (Anna Louise), Herbert and Anna via the library.

What I do know is that my gg grandpa George Smith and grandma Emma lived in Big Timber, MT and later on his daughter and her children lived in Sun Valley, ID. I am not sure if that is a coincidence or not, I will have to ask my living relatives on that one.

Update: I just looked at the 1920 Idaho Census that was taken in Kooskia for Bert Smith. I think it's the right one as it lists him being born in NJ (he was) and his parents being born in NY (they were) and it seems he got married in MN to Ethel Allen and there oldest daughter was born in MN and also in their household lives their niece Doris Laird. It lists Doris's father has being from the US and her mother being born in NJ.

Hi,
With a surname of Smith it's VERY important to be sure you've found the correct people and made the correct connections. In 1880 the Smith family was living in Ridgefield, Bergen, New Jersey.
Rudolph H. Smith, b. NY, 39, no occupation.
Louise Anna, wife, b. NY, 37.
Harry R., b. NY, 14.
Eugene M., b. NY, 12.
Maggie, b. NY, 10.
George W., b. NJ, 7.
Herbert M., b. Nj, 5.
Cornelia E., b. NJ, 3.
William F., b. NJ, 9/12ths.

In 1895 the family was living in Girard, Otter Tail, Minnesota.
Rudolph H. Smith, 54.
Louise A., wife, 51.
George A., 22.
Herbert M., 19.
William A. 15.
Anne L., 12.

Note that Herbert's middle initial is M on both Census records.

Name: Herbert Bertrum Smith
On Sept. 12, 1911 was living in Kooskia, Idaho, ID
Born: 7 March 1875
Occupation: Laborer ____, Kooskia Milling ____
Wife: Ethel Smith

I don't know if this is the same person as Herbert M. Smith or not. I looked up in the Western States Marriage Index and there was no marriage for Herbert M. Smith.

Name: Herbert Moses Smith
Born: 7 March 1875
Died: Kooskia, Idaho Co. per 149914
Source: Idaho Death Index 1911-51.

I didn't find any death info for Herbert Bertrum Smith.

What that all means is unless you know them to be the same person there's no point in concluding Herbert Moses Smith married Ethel.

Herbert Moses Smith died in 1946 and his obituary won't have current enough survivors to be able to find current survivors in Kooskia.

Anna Louise Laird b. April 26, 1883 and died March 23, 1913, Kooskia, Idaho, ID. Source: Brigham Young University-Idah Death Index.

I couldn't find her marriage to Harry A. Laird.

I did find Harry, Anna and children in 1910 in Stuart, Idaho, Idaho.
Harry A. Laird, b. KS, 35, marr 10 yrs, mail carrier government.
Anna L., wife, b. NJ, 26.
Heloise R., b. ID, 7.
Doris E., b. ID, 6.

An Harry Arthur Laird
Born: Nov. 4, 1897
Died: April 19, 1920 in Kellogg, Shoshone, ID per death cert 030266.
Source: Brigham Young University-Idaho Death Index.

However, this Harry can't be the one married to Anna because the one above was born in 1897 and her Harry was born abt. 1875.

I didn't find any other entries for their daughters.

You don't have any related persons who died late enought to look up their obituary and then try to contact their survivors.

You can access spokeo or zabasearch and look up Smith and contact each one and ask them if they're descended from Rudolph. Kooskia is a small town so maybe that would work.
Successful Searching!

What I do know I mentioned in the first message. So I do not know if Herbert had any other children. I do need help finding more about my gg grandpa's George's sibling descendants.
I just hope that someone has a photo of my gg grandpa's parents.

I am looking for any Smith descendants that are left in Kooskia and the surrounding areas. Please read the information below and take note of the names.

My great-great-great grandparents were Rudolph Harrison (21 Oct 1840 - 20 Jan 1930) and Anna Louise Springer Smith (6 Feb 1942 - 25 Jan 1925). Both were born in New York State. They are buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Kooskia.

They had a total of nine children, two of which are also buried in Pine Grove. Those two are Herbert Bertrum Smith (7 Mar 1875 - 13 Jul 1946) and Anna Louise Smith Laird (26 Apr 1884 - 23 Mar 1913).

Herbert was married to Grace Ethel Allen (1880-1950) and I know of at least one child, Leona Mae Smith Robinson (1912-1978).

If you are related to this family or know someone who is, please contact me lavender.blind@gmail.com

I have followed the family through the censuses, and yes, I have considered there may be no obit, but am hoping there may be another researcher that has stumbled upon it. I searched Idaho County Free Press for 1905 as well as "Pioneer Days in Idaho County." Also looked on the Idaho County Genweb which has so many great links, I love that website!

There is a Lee Smith, buried in the Mount Idaho Cemetery, Mount Idaho, Idaho County, ID. He is buried in Row 10, Plot 231, Block a-1. BUT, his date of birth and death are unknown...possibly only to the person identifying his death in this database. There may not be records for the burial.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=sm...;

This site:
http://files.usgwarchives.org/id/idaho/cemeteries/mtidaho.tx...
identifies the cemetery as follows:
Mt. Idaho Cemetery,
approximately 7 miles southeast of Grangeville, Idaho County, Idaho.
The cemetery sits up a small hill off of Highway 12 in the town of Mt.
Idaho. Go through Mt. Idaho and as you are leaving town, the highway
veers to the left, there is a gravel road to the right that goes up
the hill. The cemetery is on the left as you go up the hill.
Mt. Idaho was once a fort. All that remains today of the fort is the
brick chimney which is enclosed by a fence and there is a sign marking
it.
Based on the full description in this website, it doesn't appear the RAOGK volunteer can help much, if at all at this cemetery. There doesn't seem to be any cemetery records to prove or disprove this is the correct person. They could check for obituaries in Grangeville; BUT, if this family lived in Mt. Idaho, there probably wouldn't be one in Grangeville. Obits were not as common in 1919 as today.

Here is a child, stillborn, last name Smith, born/died December 1919 in Mt. Idaho. This "could" be the child found in the Mt Idaho Cemetery. The Death Certificate "should" identify the parents, #028082.
http://abish.byui.edu/specialCollections/famhist/Death/detai...

Obtaining the Death Certificate. I don't normally suggest ordering a Death Certificate, but it might be the only means to identify if the above is the correct person. BUT, this may or may not be the correct person. You knowledge of the exact cemetery and information about the family might eliminate this person. Or, you may wish to not pay the $14.00 to order the certificate.
--I checked the County government for Idaho County, their website identifies death certificates would be ordered through the State:
http://healthandwelfare.idaho.gov/Families/BirthDeathMarriag...

Good Luck,
Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA
Divorce records are public records in most States. However, the Idaho Dept of Health and Welfare: http://healthandwelfare.idaho.gov/?TabId=82
Says: Birth certificates are legally confidential in Idaho for 100 years. Death, stillbirth, marriage, and divorce certificates are legally confidential in Idaho for 50 years. Because of that law, the Court Clerk for the Idaho County District Court might not be able to help you without proof of identity.

You identified you don't need a certificate, just the date. Eventually you may have to provide not only the date, but the place of the divorce decree. (If this information is needed for a job, government security clearance...you will be asked to identify the date and WHERE).

So, I'm having to assuming the following: You did not initiate the action as "Petitioner." You may have been the "Respondent," receiving documents to sign for this action. You probably didn't have an attorney. If you did not receive documents to sign, or have to appear in court, you may have become divorced in absence (Indicating the court could not locate you and you were considered as having abandoned the marriage).
---OR, you may not have been divorced. If you were young and just assumed the former spouse had done it, then you might get a shock later.

You identified looking in Idaho County for the divorce. However, the legal action did not have to take place in Idaho County. If your former wife had moved to another county, she "could" have filed in that county. Or just for convenience or savings, went to another place. A divorce action does NOT have to be completed in the county of marriage... or even in the same State.

So, your own memory of events will have to be tested first. Remember WHEN and where you were married. Do you know/remember if your wife stayed in that area? When was the last time you were with your spouse as husband and wife, and where was she? When do you believe you separated? When and where do you believe she may have filed? Is there enough satisfaction in your own mind to strongly believe she filed and a divorce decree was issued? Were there any children? If so, did you have support payments to them? Were you to pay support to your wife? If there WAS support, when did it end?

Based on those questions, are you satisfied in your own mind there was a decree issued in Idaho County? If you don't know, read the next paragraph below. In most other States, a divorce/dissolution is filed in the County Superior Court. Some are in the Civil Division, some are in the Family Court Division.

Basically to solve the questions, I would recommend obtaining an official copy of your certificate. Print off the request form from: http://healthandwelfare.idaho.gov/?TabId=82 Send them the proof of acceptable identification. Send them a money order or check for $13.00. Once you receive the information back in the US Mail, save it for the next time you need proof. All the peace of mind for only $13.00.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Any chance anyone can help me with this? I really am in need of obits or any other information about this family. I believe I had a name wrong on my first post. It's not Alvina but more likely "Albina" Holly. She married Charles Ray or just Ray Kincaid.

Thank you,
lperry@columbus.rr.com
