Anyone search for family in Gooding County might want to take a look at this recently digitized set of records on Familysearch.org. The May 2013 FamilySearch User Newsletter talks about "New from the Vault," and tells you how to find them, these school records are there. In many cases this includes parents names, all the children 6-16 along with their dates of birth.
Be forewarned, the data is not 100% accurate but it is another data point.
David Condit
www.condit-family.com

I see you are new to posting on the Rootsweb system. When you post, identify the person you seek and some criteria information (Their DOB is ALWAYS helpful, their DOD and POD also helps, spouse name, siblings, parents) If the name is common (John Smith), the more you identify the better. In man cases, an obit may not have been published, but there are other records that might be available (Census, State Archives, Recorded Documents, Grave info, etc).

Hi,

It all depends upon which newspapers were microfilmed and if the family or funeral home placed an obituary in a newspaper. There are two obituary volunteers for Gooding Co. at www.gengathering.com. You do have to create a user ID and password to enter this web site but access to the volunteer info is free. Enter Idaho and Twin Falls in County box. Successful Searching!

I think it is just a coincidence because his wife was from Pocatello, but I do not know how they met.

Hi Mark,
The why question is the hardest to answer and often is not answered by any and all research. Oh, don't we wish they'd written it down!

I found the following articles that explain some points on why settlers moved to Gooding County, Idaho.

Land was cheaper. Idaho History and Genealogy, gesswhoto.com/idaho/union-pacific-barg...

Blaine County Idaho, co.blaine.id.us/

rootsweb.ancestry.com/~idgoodin/

It looks like people originally came for the silver mining and after that bust, sheep raising became the next big "industry".

You should be able to find books in your local library that explain the history of Idaho counties or do a Google search.

2. Won't know unless he bought land there or his obituary. Do you have a copy?

3. I believe that Richard went to Idaho because of what his father said about the State. Richard was living in Oakview, Boyd Co., KY in 1910 and died 1 Feb 1912 in Boise, Ada Co.
To answer this question, you'll need to find him in the Boise City or Ada County Directories.

There is an Idaho Historical Library volunteer at Random Acts Genealogical Kindness. Go to raogk.org
Choose Idaho
Click on A thru E
Scroll down to Ada Co. and choose Bonnie.

Do you have a copy of his obituary? Bonnie can look that up too.

4. The how Richard died might be in his obituary.

Richard Crooks
Born: 6 Feb 1883
Died: 1 Feb 1912, Boise, Ada Co. per death cert #001411.
Source: Idaho Death Index 1911-51.

If it isn't you'll need to order a copy of his death certificate.

5. Won't know why Charles moved to Idaho unless it's in his obituary. Won't know when unless he's listed in a Wendell City or Gooding Co. Directory.

A Charles Gibson Crooks
Born: 17 May 1888
Died: 3 Jan 1942, Wendell, Gooding Co. per death cert #127544.
Source: Idaho Death Index 1911-51.

There is an obituary volunteer at raogk.org
Choose Idaho
Click on F thru Z
Scroll down to Gooding Co. and choose Coy. Ask him/her about directories in the County.

Also the Gooding County Historical, goodingcountyhistoricalsociety.shutterfly.com/obituariesforgoodingcounty goes research and might have the directories.

6. Charles's cause of death might be in his obituary or you might need to order a copy of his death certificate.
Successful Searching!

The Curse of Idaho

*Crossposted from "Unknown" "Ada County" and "Blain County" forums*

OK, it's probably not Idaho's fault, but in actuality, I have two people in my tree (brothers, to be exact) who both left Kentucky and moved to Idaho and I don't know why. One died within a year of moving out there. Almost exactly 30 years later, the other one did, too. And I don't know why. And, on top of all that, it would seem their father went out there first prior to 1910 and, guess what? I don't know why! :)

So, I'm wondering a few things about Idaho and what happened to my family out there. First, let me give a little information.

In 1900, my gggf, a widower named James Gibson Crooks, was living in a boarding house in Kentucky with his older son (Richard Earl Crooks - 17 at the time) and working as a team driver. His younger son (Charles Gibson Crooks) was living with his maternal grandfather and his two sisters. Both boys were born in Colorado when their father moved out there to try to make his fortune in the Colorado Silver Boom. He had an adventurous spirit, I suppose.

Some time between 1900 and 1910, James moved to Casey, Blaine County, Idaho. Richard was still living in Kentucky with his wife, Jennie, and three daughters, Margaret, Georgia, and Dorothy, working as a blacksmith at a steel mill. I don't know why, but at some point between mid 1910, when the census was taken, and January, 1912, Richard moved to Idaho and was working as a teamster. I'm not certain yet if his family was with him. On Feb. 1, 1912, Richard died in Boise, Ada County, Idaho.

After Richard's death, James moved back to Kentucky, where, by 1920, he lived with his son, Charles (still unmarried) in the house of his daughter's father-in-law. In 1927, James died. Some time between then and 1941, Charles moved out to Idaho where he died as well on Jan 3, 1941, in Wendell, Gooding County, Idaho. Richard and Charles were both buried back in Kentucky.

So, my questions are as follows:

1) What was going on in Idaho in the early 20th Century that could have drawn a teamster/miner/adventurous spirit such as my grandfather and one of his sons out there, and why again in the late 1920s/1930s for the other son?

2) When did he go out there?

3) When (specifically) and why did Richard go to Idaho and was he alone or with his family.

4) How did Richard die?

5) When and why did Charles go to Idaho?

6) How did he die?

The first question is what I'm really bringing to this forum. Given that, I could probably start piecing together the rest. However, if anyone has any insight on the rest, I would appreciate it, as well.

Thanks in advance,

Mark Songer

The Gooding Public library doesn't do obituary look ups. They are refered to the Gooding County Historical Society. They charge a $5 for each obituary. This money is used to support the county museum. If you are interested in this service contact the president, Sharon Cheney at scheney@magiclink.com

Contact the Gooding Library, 208-934-4089 and ask them if they provide an obituary service for out-of-area people. You might have to explain to them that he died there and you'd like a copy of his obituary.

OR
Contact Random Acts Genealogical Kindness for an obituary volunteer. Go to raogk.org, read guidelines, choose Idaho, choose Gooding Co. and choose Coy.

Hopefully the obituary will provide his daughters married names.
The BLM has land records listing Lewis E. McMahon at:
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/Detail.asp?Patent.... Perhaps you already have this?
This shows the legal description of his land. With that you should be able to find who and when owned the land after Lewis. The phone # of the Gooding County Recorder's office is: 208-934-4841. Usually the clerk of the court handles probate. Good Luck.

thanks for you reply. I am interested in locating where he/when he died and where he might be buried. I had hoped that by locating the farm that there might have been a record of where his next address was...
He was born actually in MO 1856. but he would list ILL or Iowa as his birth place. He was orphaned at age of 5 so he did not know a lot of family history.
In abt 1904 he came back and then left his family in VA and never returned. 'Had no clue where he was until the 1900 census when I found him in Big Flat, Idaho.1910 he's in Hagerman,Lincoln,Idaho.

I was there when Bertha died. I found your post because I was curious about what happened to their son, Alva. He would be about 69 years old. I haven't seen him since we were kids.

Family Trees on Ancestry.com having your family:

1. From "Angela Davis", lives in Knoxville, TN. This is probably the person you were attempting to contact. You can contact her via this page, just click on her name. This is probably the most current of her family tree's posted online:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/11019208/person/-542493593?ss...=
Here is another one:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/2869950/person/-1808616402?ss...=
She shows your grandfather marriage to Violet Elizabeth Smith in Campbell County, TN in 1901. Then he marries Lillie Donna Gross in 1912, in Anderson County.

You show Henry Hardy Poore, born 1879. You show Lilly Donna Gross, death 1916, but show her as being the mother of Arthur Leon Poore, born 1916; Leonard Poore, born 1922; and Raymond Clyde Poore, born 1938. You show Henry having died 1922; if so, he couldn't be the father of Raymond either.

There are many records showing Henry Poore married Lillie Gross on 16 Nov 1912 in Anderson Co.
I don't know where your information came from; but, I would "guess" Lily Donna Wilson and Donna Lily Gross was the same person. In any event, contact Angela Davis through her family tree above.

Ron Bestrom

You might want to search for this family tree and collaborate with the person who submitted it.

I'm a little confused on why you posted this query on the Gooding County, Idaho Message Board. Henry was born and died in Anderson Co., TN.

I didn't find anything else regarding Henry. Successful Searching!
