Hi,

I looked through the few cemeteries within Gem Co. that are online but didn't find her. The Gem City Cemetery isn't online and since she lived there, that's one you should look in to. Do a Google search for that name and you'll find their telephone number.

If you still don't find her, contact the Gem County Historical Museum Compex, www.gemcountymuseum.org/links.html. Be sure to look for winter hours. A lot of museum in "snow country" don't open until the spring. Successful Searching!

"The Village that Grew", by Ruth B. Lyons, 1979, p. 30:

In 1870 Douglas Knox bought a farm up the road from the Burdges for $700 and took up some adjoining land. Before moving to Martinsville, the Knoxes had operated a stage station on Willow Creek. Their oldest daughter, Ella Knox Parrish paints a word picture of her pioneer home,

I was two years old when my dad brought us here to settle in a little log cabin three miles downstream from Martinsville. It was there he planted the first fruit trees, crab apple and prune, ever grown in the valley . . .

"The Village that Grew", by Ruth B. Lyons, 1979, p. 29:

In October of 1864, (Doc) William Burdge and his emigrant outfit, the finest equipped that ever entered the village, came grinding down the Camel's Back into Payette Valley. He brought the first Roan Durham cattle and Morgan strain horses to Idaho.

The Burdges, like most of the valley pioneers, settled near the river. They purchased part of the Block House Ranch located two miles west of Martinsville. The north side of the property extended to the river enabling Mr. Burdge to build a private ditch . . .

In 1874, he hauled stone grinding wheels from Eagle and set up a grist-mill. The stones came originally from Canyon Hill northwest of Caldwell. see http://gem.idgenweb.org/albm_burdgegrist.html

Lyons, 1979, p. 28f:

Christian and Katherine Kjerrsgaard and their daughters, Katherine and Mary, took passage on a wind jammer and sailed from Denmark in 1862. It was nine weeks before they landed at Castelgarden, New York. Lena Driscoll, a descendant continues the story:

The young couple set out for the golden west in quest of a home. They traveled by train to St. Louis, Missouri, where Katherine bought a cow with her savings. Eventually the family joined a wagon train. . . . Their journey was halted near the present town of Preston, Idaho, where Katherine gave birth to a son.

In a few days, they traveled on and decided to take the shortcut down the Tim Goodall Hill (probably Freezeout), as it was called at the time, and across the Payette Valley to Washington. When they reached the hill, the wagon was roughlocked. Katherine, seeing the steep incline, walked down carrying her three-weeks-old son.

The Kjerrsgaards went on to Walla Walla, but after living there for a year, they came back and took up a homestead along the (Payette) river east of the Riggs place. Their first home was made of native cottonwood logs. . . .

"The Village that Grew", by Ruth B. Lyons, 1979, p. 27:

The Nel Hansens, also Danes, took up land across the river from the Klingbacks. Their son Dan, remembers:

Dad homesteaded near the slough because he needed driftwood to make charcoal for his forge. He made nails and horseshoes out of iron hauled in from Kelton, Utah. Dad brought his anvil all the way from Denmark and set up the first blacksmith shop in the community. We went to the Wilson School, built in 1876, three months out of the year. . . .

When I was a kid (50's-60's) & probably even a decade later there was a Dewey Orchard on the south side of the Dewey Road, just before the road curve up to the canal bridge.

A possible source for info on Kjersgaard/Kiersgaard or Kesgard, and Hansens might be Ruth Lyons' books, "Valley of Plenty" or "The Village that Grew". It's been yrs since I've read them & neither have indexes. "Valley of Plenty" is abt her homesteading ancestoral family, Edson & Sarah Bishop, & they too were west of present-day Emmett. "The Village that Grew" is abt Emmett & she relied heavily on Mills' earlier work.

I included Katie Kesgard in my "Homesteading Women" story - http://gem.idgenweb.org/histry-womensteaders.html. The complete Kesgard story is yet to be told.

Thanks for the interesting information on Montour. I didn't know any of that. My husband and I both come from pioneering families in Emmett-the Kjersgaard,Kiersgaard or Kesgard, Klingbacks and Hansens came at the same time. My husband's family is the Knox and Knouse families.

We live in Ola now but that is just considered part of the Emmett, Sweet, Montour area.

This is a wonderful and very interesting book.

The only mention of the Dewey name is on p.158. It said the Dewey interests of Nampa acquired the place. I think it was talking about where Montour area where McConnel family lived after the ranch was cut into small farms.

In Emmett, Idaho we lived in the Dewey house but I don't know their name.

Re: HOGAN in Emmett, Gem, Idaho in 1900's

Grandmother = Joanne G. HOGAN (b. 16 Dec 1931 - )

Her Parents
Wanda Dowdle (you indicate her mother was "Doudle") KINGSFORD, born 15 April 1911 in Idaho, died 4 Feb 1982 in Yakima
--Daughter of
Edward Francis Kingsford, born 10 Feb 1876 in Franklin, Franklin Co, Idaho, deid 20 Nov 1942
in Blackfoot, Bingham Co, ID.
Ethelyn Doudle, born 21 Nov 1879 in Franklin, Oneida County, ID, died 9 July 1955 in Layton,
Davis Co, UT.

Louis Clarence HOGAN, born 14 July 1893 in Indian Territory, Oklahoma, died 8 June 1952 in Arco, Butte County, Idaho
--son of
Dean HOGAN, identified as Lewis E. Hogan on your family tree, born Mar 1856 in Missouri, died Oklahoma
Annie GURBER , identified as Annie B. Sarber on your tree, born 10 Nov 1872 in Kansas, died 11 Mar 1948 in Gem County, ID

The 1900 Census of Township 19, Creek Nation, Indian Territory (Oklahoma), census enumerated 13 June.
Lewis E. Hogan, born March 1856 in Missouri to father born in Germany, mother in New York, Livery man (Livery stables/horses). Married six years (1893/1894)
Annie B, born May 1873 in Kansas to father born in Missouri, mother in Kansas.
Lewis C, born July 1894 in Indian Terr,
Walter J, born June 1885 in Indian Terr.

The World War I Draft Registration Card Image Database:
Louis Clarence Hogan, born July 14, 1894 (I have found a good number of persons DOB in the registration were off one year, so he "could" have been born in 1893). He was born on the Creek Nation, he was a miner (type not readable, but I would guess "coal"), he had a mother and sister depending on him. He registered in Pittsburg, OK.

The 1920 Census for Emmett, Gem County, Idaho
Annabel(sic)) Hogan, age 48(1871/1872), born in Kansas to both parents born in Indiana, laborer/box factory, widow.
Louis C, age 23 (1896/1897), born in OK to father born in Missouri, mother in Indiana
Clara, 11, born in OK
--She is shown as being the residence owner, the family above is renting and appears to be in the same house, a John, 30, and Mary, 22, Tillman, john born in Indiana to both parents born in Unknown.

I also found the story from Richard Elias concerning Louis that you had posted into your information:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/75153/person/-2131387475/stor...
--The Story is hat outlaw "Bell Star" tried to poison him by putting rattlesnake venom in his drink. This sounds more like family lore than potential fact. Actually spelled "Belle Starr" (Myra Belle Shirley) was an Indian Territory outlaw, but she would have found it much easier just to shoot him. Her gang operated out of the Fort Worth area, Starr Hollow is named after them.
--The Shelly Bros story is interesting, but there is no indication of a connection to Lewis Hogan. This site: http://www.okolha.net/bick_byrd_king_names.htm has an article on E. Hickman "Heck" Bruner that was involved with both the Shelly's and Belle Starr.
--I did see the link for http://www.okolha.net/dusm_usm_H.htm that identified "L.E. Hogan, Deputy US Marshal 1894- "
I also found: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ok/topic/lawmen/mollie/usmarshal... indicating a L.E. Hogan in Tulsa, 1901. So, did he go back, or was this simply another person.

This site: http://www.okolha.net/McAlester_McWeir_king_nmaes.htm identifies a John McCann and sent with Dean Hogan to arrest the Shelly Brothers in the winter of 1895; however it appeared from other documentation the Shelly Bros were arrested by Bruner in 1894.

But, that doesn't prove the person. As you indicated, I also have a gov't, public service background, mine being in investigations. I MUST have proof in genealogy, as in crime. In my genealogy work, I've seen to many family stories turn to dust with proof. Sometimes there is a hint of fact, sometimes not. "I'm a government agent…yeah… In fact I was sent to the moon to protect the astronauts from space aliens…yeah." My recommendation is to ignore this story and first concentrate on identification.

From this point everything identified was confusing. I think the 1985, 1986, 1987 and i, ii, and iii, is part of your documentation system and confuses the issue. "They had the following children…" not sure who "They" represents, but it is not material to your main question.

"I have not been able to find a connection to a Dean HOGAN and an Annabel GURBER."
Your tree indicates Anna B. Sarber, this posting says Annabel Gurber. You need to identify where you obtained the names of Sarber and Gurber.

Yes, a marriage license would help; but they were not recorded at the State level (In most States) until into the 1900's. Oklahoma did not become a State until 1907, so any marriage records would be at the County level, IF maintained, and IF in Oklahoma. The same goes for the birth certificates of the children. You would need to know where they were born and hope that County maintained the records AND the mother's maiden name was listed.

For Hogan and Anna, yes your investigation must be done in Oklahoma. They were married circa 1893/1894. Anna might not be the first wife of Hogan. I don't know if you found her in the 1910 Census, I did not. She is identified as a widow in the 1920 Census in Idaho. A good portion of "widows" in the early Census were not widows, but had been deserted or divorced, the stigma caused the "lie."

You show a L.E. Hogan in Tulsa in the 1910 Census, age is 54, born in Missouri, father in Germany, mother in Missouri, which matches search criteria, except the 1900 census showed mother born in New York. The errors in the census "might" explain this. Son Jennings, age 10, born in OK; Lottie 6 (1903/1904) and Eugene, 4 (1905/1906).
I find two family trees having Jennings. One is yours (Reeves/Yzaquirre), the other is simply "Hogan – Jennings A", showing mother as Anna B. Sarber. Jennings is shows with death 1 Mar 1937 in Emmett, Gem Co, ID. I suspect this one is yours also.

I reached a point of research that I feel that I'm doing everything you've already done, as recorded on your family tree.

You need to post on the Rootsweb message boards in Oklahoma. When you post, again, include the link to your family tree, otherwise a few volunteers that look would muddle through the census and perhaps find your family tree. Also, leave out all the unneeded information. Start with: You are seeking the parents of Louis Clarence Hogan, leave out the other side of your grandmother's tree. Use the basic question, who is Lewis E. Hogan and his family.

Also, there are volunteers that might help out. In Oklahoma: http://www.raogk.org/oklahoma.htm
In Idaho: http://www.raogk.org/idaho2.htm
I set this one to show for Gem County. Lori does Public Records-Library. She could check the City Directory of Emmett to follow the year publications seeing when the Hogans first arrived and if Lewis also was in the residence. A City Directory (Polks) are an annual publication that lists persons living in a populated area (City, County) in alphabetical order. Later versions also had cross reference by address, but with just the head of household named. A listing would identify the person, the spouse in parenthesis, the type of employment, sometimes the place of employment and address, then the residence address of the person. If a spouse was employed, they also would be listed within the alphabetical listing of the last name. Others in the household were also so listed if employed, children were even sometimes listed as "student." Once the Subject of the search is found, the address should also be searched for others living at that household with that last name.
--In Public Records Court House, she can see if there is recorded documents (deeds, power-of-attorney, marriage), also looking for death records, etc.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA (just down the road).
Hi Kristine,
Was their marriage info listed in their obituaries?

If not, you'll need a copy of their marriage license. Lewis E. Hogan married Anna/Annie/Annabel about 1893. One of his stories said he was fighting outlaws in 1895 in Checotah, Oklahoma. That's where I'd look for their marriage info. However, I'm not familiar with where those records are kept in Oklahoma. If you don't know, you can look up the county on Rootsweb.com, Home, about half way down the page on the left-hand side. There's city/state converter to county.

Anna/Annie/Annabel's maiden name should be listed on one of the children's birth certificates.

Her maiden name will be on her death certificate if the person reporting to the County knew her maiden name. You already have her name as Anna B. Sarber on your family tree so I'm confused when you say you don't know it.

The Gem County Clerk-Auditor-Recorder, co.gem.id.us/clerk-auditor-recorder/default.htm has copies of death certificates and there is a fee. Successful Searching!

HOGAN in Emmett, Gem, Idaho in 1900's

Good Day,

I am hoping someone can help me.

I have confirmed my maternal grandmother's family up to a certain point through careful examination of census records. When I took to the internet, I came across the following listing for the name of my grandmother's father's parents names. I have found a conflict and am hoping someone can give me reason to believe that the information provided is correct.

My grandmother = Joanne G. HOGAN (b. 16 Dec 1931 - )

Her Parents (From internet site & confirmation from my grandmother) = Wanda Dowdle KINGSFORD (Etheland DOWDLE , Robert Hughes DOWDLE , Robert DOWDLE , James DOWDLE , Robert , Sr DOWDLE , John)

Wanda married Louis Clarence HOGAN, son of Dean HOGAN and Annie GURBER (my grandmother does not remember his parents names for sure. Without telling her the options, she mentioned that she thought Annie was correct - so in the case listed here or the one below, I am more confident that Annie is correct, but not as confident that Dean is correct.)

They had the following children (all correctly identified by my grandmother):

1985	F	i	Joan Gaelia HOGAN
1986	F	ii	Barbara Lou HOGAN
1987	F	iii	Louis Kay HOGAN

Everything listed above is correct EXCEPT for the parents of Louis Clarence HOGAN. My understanding (based on census records) is that his parents names were:

F: Lewis E. HOGAN
M: Anna/Annie B/Annabel

I have not been able to find a connection to a Dean HOGAN and an Annabel GURBER.

Essentially, I am at my brick wall with this line of the family. I can not find Lewis E. HOGAN's parents nor can I find a marriage record that will give me Anna/Annie B/Annabel's maiden name.

Any help you can provide or thoughts on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

I've come across a large old family Bible that is dedicated to Mother from Ida and Ada.
Marriages: Samuel Birdwell and Ida Bell Hurt at Pearl ID, July 4th 1898
Albert Pickle and Ada Maree Hurt at Pearl Idaho March 15th 1904.
Births: Bradford Hurt, Dec 18 1854
Bessie Gilbert Hurt, Sept 11th 1857
Ida Belle Hurt, Oct 11, 1878
Ada Maree Hurt, March 17 1882
......
These are written in the middle of the Bible along with many more entries. There are 2 loose pages from another source, possibly a Bible, including deaths, births, marriages with surnames Gilbert, Newby, Hurt, Pettigrew, and Burkhard and mentioning Emmett, Idaho.

Anyone that may be descended from these families, or know someone who is, please contact me so that the Bible can be returned to its proper family. I am not related to any of these people, as far as know.

Reba McMillan
