Ella Taylor Smith (1914-2008) Obituary

Logan Herald Journal, 10/10/08

PRESTON, Idaho - On Oct. 8, 2008, Ella Taylor Smith, after nearly 94 years of experiences and memories, ended her journey here on earth to return home. Ella was born Oct. 20, 1914, in Preston, Idaho, to John Ole and Mary Anorah Perkins Taylor. She had a wonderful childhood growing up in Cache Valley, filled with days working in the fields, playing with friends and family, and preparing for community bonfires in her parents' large orchard.
Grandma Smith, as she was known by so many, completed her education up to the eighth grade, at which point she began working to help support her widowed mother and family. For so little time actually spent in an academic setting, she possessed an immense amount of knowledge and was one of the wisest women we knew.
At the age of 20, she met and fell in love with Kenneth Smith. They were married in Logan, Utah, on April 29, 1934, and were sealed a year later in the Logan LDS Temple for time and all eternity. During their first few years of marriage, the country was at war and entering the Great Depression. Ken and Ella were fortunate enough to obtain a construction position working on building an Air Force base. This allowed Ken to stay in the states, together with Ella and the two children they had been blessed with: Derald, who later married Merlene Nelson, currently residing in Salt Lake City, Utah; and Norma, who later married Keith Bosworth, currently residing in Preston.
Grandma Smith was loved and adored by seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. They will miss her wit, charisma and love of life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Gilbert Smith; three brothers, Harris Lavon, Clyve Lorenzo and John Oral; four sisters, Annorah, Therma, Myrl and Thora; one grandson, Blaine Smith; one grandson-in-law, Derek Hinckley; and by one great-grandchild, Kehmer D. Hinckley.
Grandma was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed many years of service in her various callings. She was also an amazing example of enthusiasm, courage and perseverance. She touched all our lives and will be missed greatly.
The family would like to express its appreciation to the Franklin County Medical Center staff and the doctors who helped support them.
Funeral services will be held on at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, in the Preston 7th Ward Chapel, 155 N. 2nd West, Preston, with Bishop Phil Abrams conducting. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. Interment will be in the Preston Cemetery. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.webbmortuary.com.

Amy Melinda Webster Bowman (1922-2008) Obituary

Logan Herald Journal, 09/07/08

PRESTON, Idaho - Amy Melinda Webster Bowman passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at the age of 85. She was born Sept. 19, 1922, at Glendale, Idaho, the oldest daughter of Denton Mendenhall and Melinda Alice Larsen Webster. Her father was a widower whose first wife had died in childbirth leaving him with three young children. Because her mother had known and respected his first wife, she was named Amy after her.
Amy was raised and educated in Glendale on the banks of what is now the Glendale Reservoir. The reservoir was built in 1927, which then separated them from the school and the church. That meant that they had to walk two miles up and around the reservoir or go by boat to school or church. In the winter they would ride horses to school. She graduated from the eighth grade and moved on to high school. Shortly after, her mother became ill and she was needed to care for the children, so she dropped out. In the fall, she decided to get a job instead of returning to high school.
As a young girl, she loved being outdoors and loved spending time with her dad. It never made a difference what they were doing as long as it was outside. She would haul hay and milk cows. She loved riding horses and taking care of them.
As she became a teenager she began working odd jobs, including driving a team of horses for a farmer while he broadcast seed for 15 cents a day and riding a grain harvester, tying bags of wheat as they came out of the hopper. She also worked as a cook at a hotel in Preston that was a boarding house for the railroad men.
She later worked for the Remington Arms Co., were she made bullets for 50 caliber machine guns in Salt Lake City. In 1943, based on the decision of the flip of a coin, she and a girlfriend took off hitchhiking for Seattle, Wash., where she went to work as a riveter at the Boeing Air Field.
In late 1943 she was reunited with an old boyfriend, Glen Bowman, who was from Cub River, when it was discovered that he was also stationed at Boeing Air Field while serving in the Army. They were married April 15, 1944, in Seattle, Wash. The marriage was later solemnized on their wedding anniversary April 15, 1966, in the Logan LDS Temple.
Glen and Amy were blessed with three children; Sandy Goodsell, Gary Bowman, and Shirley Bowman, their special needs daughter who was the light of their lives.
Amy worked alongside her husband for many years helping to build the family farm and to raise their three children. Oftentimes it meant doing it on her own while Glen was working away from home. After her children were grown she worked for a few years for Hobbs in the mink farms in Franklin and then for Cache Valley Dairy in Amalga. She worked for the dairy for almost 18 years until her health forced her retirement.
Amy was an active member of the LDS Church and held many positions over the years. Her most cherished church callings were that of Ward Music Director, which she held for 21 years, and Relief Society chorister for 15 years in the Mapleton ward. Amy loved music and singing and would often be found with her guitar in hand singing for a church or social function, wedding or funeral, or with a group of her grandchildren or great-grandchildren gathered around her singing a traditional old favorite song. As a young girl, her father bought her the guitar that she continued to use up to her very last days for $15 from a Sears and Roebuck catalog. No matter where life took her, that guitar was with her. She last played her guitar just one month ago at the funeral of her own husband, Glen.
Amy is survived by two daughters, Sandy Goodsell of Logan, Utah, and Shirley Bowman, of Cub River; one son, Gary, and daughter-in-law, Jeri Bowman, of Cub River. She is also survived by one brother, Weldon Webster (MaryAnn) of Salt Lake City, Utah; seven grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, five brothers and three sisters.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to all the wonderful staff at the Logan Regional Hospital and to all the nursing staff who dedicated themselves to the Hospice service they provided so faithfully. You truly made a difficult journey much easier for Amy and the family.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at the Mapleton Ward Chapel in Cub River, with Bishop Randy Halford conducting. Friends may call at the Webb Mortuary in Preston on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the Mapleton Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.webbmortuary.com.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials may be made in Amy's name to the Cache Employment and Training Center at 275 W. 400 S. Logan, UT 84321 or to a charity of your choice. This organization was special to Amy for all that they have done for Shirley.
Deanne Smith Turner (1926-2008) Obituary

Deseret Morning News, 08/09/08

SYRACUSE- Deanne Smith Turner, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, 82, died in her home in Syracuse, Utah on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 of natural causes associated with her age. Deanne was born June 26, 1926 in Preston, Idaho to Wilford and Terese Thomas Smith. She was the fourth of seven children. She married Claude J. Turner in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple on June 23, 1950. She treasured the 58 happy years of their marriage. Deanne valued education and thoroughly enjoyed her academic years by working hard, eagerly taking on many leadership roles, and getting involved in many activities. She attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah and graduated with a degree in home economics in 1949. After graduation, she became a school teacher in Richfield, Utah until she married and started a family. She and Claude had six children and Deanne put her home economics and teaching skills to work in a new, more personally fulfilling way. She was the consummate teacher, always encouraging her children to learn and improve. She was a devoted and faithful member of the LDS church her entire life and served happily in many callings in every organization. Again, she found herself in many teaching positions, including teaching early morning seminary in her home for years. Through these assignments and her own love of the gospel and the history of the Church, she became a true gospel scholar. Her love of the gospel was evident in everything she did and said. After she and Claude retired, they began making plans to serve a mission. Deanne had looked forward to this experience for many years and was elated when the opportunity became available for them to serve the Lord as missionaries. They were called to serve in the San Antonio, Texas mission. She was an excellent correspondent and kept good records of their missionary experiences. She loved the time they served as missionaries and felt the 18 months went by too quickly. When they returned from their mission, they made their home in Syracuse, Utah. Deanne was a gifted homemaker, seamstress, and quilter. She belonged to many quilting guilds and enjoyed learning new skills and sharing her beautiful handiwork with her family. The greatest love of Deanne's life was her family. She cherished her happy marriage and recognized the blessing her temple marriage had been to her and her family throughout her life. Her two greatest joys in life came from her membership and activity in the LDS Church and from the fun times she spent with her family. She is survived by her husband, Claude J; children, Gary T. Turner (Ana), Las Vegas, NV; Sandra J. Hansen (J. Kelly), Syracuse, UT; Kenneth W. Turner (Keetette), Sandy, UT; Douglas B. Turner (Laurie), Herndon, VA; Glen C. Turner (Lisseth), Centerville, UT; and Marianne Siepert (Kash), Roseburg, OR; 28 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Tompson, Logan, UT; Beth Dunkley, Logan, UT; one brother, Richard Smith, Grand Junction, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Mark Smith; and two sisters, Gwen Johnson, and Marion Pond. Funeral Services will be held on Mon., August 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the Syracuse 2nd Ward Chapel, 2228 S. 1660 W., Syracuse. Friends and family may gather Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Myers Mortuary, 250 North Fairfield Rd., Layton, and Monday at the Syracuse Ward Chapel from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Syracuse City Cemetery immediately following the services.
Glen Thomas Bowman (1920-2008) Obituary

Logan Herald Journal, 08/05/08

After a long and courageous battle, Glen Thomas Bowman, "Grandpa Big Bear", 88, passed away Aug. 1, 2008, at a local care center. He was born July 21, 1920, in Cub River, Idaho, the son of Priscilla Marshall and Albert Webster Bowman. He was one of eleven children. He was raised and educated in Cub River where he learned the meaning of hard work on the family farm. He married Amy Webster April 15, 1944, in Seattle, Wash. The marriage was solemnized on their wedding anniversary, April 15, 1966, in the Logan LDS Temple. They were blessed with three children; Sandy Goodsell, Gary Bowman, and Shirley Bowman.
When he was a very small child his father was killed in an automobile accident, leaving his mother with nine young children to raise. He, along with his siblings, had to help their mother work the farm in order to survive. He learned the importance and the value of hard work from a very young age. He took these life lessons and passed them down to his children and multitudes of young nieces, nephews and grandchildren over the years who came to Cub River - some willingly, some by their parents' last frustration - to work with Glen for the summer. He was a big man with a powerful booming voice that was more than enough to turn even the toughest rebel into an honorable citizen - at least while in his presence.
Glen enlisted into the United States Army in 1942, where he was stationed at Boeing Air Field in Seattle, and later at the Tooele Ordinance Depot, where he was an M.P. over the German prisoners during WWII. In 1946, he was honorably discharged from the Army. At that time, he returned to Cub River, where he purchased one third of the family's farm from his mother. Two brothers purchased the other two thirds. He has owned and operated the farm ever since.
During the early years following his leaving the Army, he also worked for the United States Forest Service. For 15 years he worked to establish and repair campgrounds, bridges, roads, restroom facilities and other amenities throughout the Cache National Forest and Franklin Basin. These improvements have now been enjoyed by generations of people who enjoy the great outdoors. Of course this required a lot of extra support and hard work from his own wife and family in order to maintain the Bowman Ranch.
Glen is survived by his wife, Amy, of Cub River; two daughters, Sandy Goodsell of Logan, Utah, and Shirley Bowman of Cub River; and one son, Gary (Jeri) Bowman, of Cub River. He is also survived by one sister, Alene (Burke) Godfrey, of Clarkston, Utah; seven grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews . He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers and five sisters.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to all the wonderful staff of the Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their dedication, faithful care and service to not only Glen but the entire family. The work you do does not go without appreciation.
Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at noon in the Mapleton Ward Chapel in Cub River, Idaho, with Bishop Randy Halford conducting. Friends may call Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 109 E. Oneida, Preston, and Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. Military rites and interment will be in the Mapleton Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.webbmortuary.com

Published in the Logan Herald Journal from 8/5/2008 - 8/19/2008
Lila M. Peglau (1916-2008) Obituary

The Salt Lake Tribune, 08/03/08

St. George, Utah Lila M. Peglau of St. George, Utah passed away quietly on July 28th, 2008, at the age of 92. She was the wife of the late Glen C. Peglau and the daughter of the late Angus M. Maughan and Susie Lena Keller. Born near Preston, Idaho in 1916, Lila later moved with her family to Richfield, Utah, where she grew up. An outstanding student, she graduated first in her class, summa cum laude, at Utah State University and attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work. Very interested in the welfare of children and women, Lila first worked as a social worker in Salt Lake City until she started her own family. She later became active in the League of Women Voters, Planned Parenthood and other community-focused organizations. After her children grew older, she and Agie (Henry) Plenk founded a nursery school at the Holladay United Church of Christ. An avid reader and intellectually curious, Lila also led a reading group that focused on philosophy and theology. Strongly committed to education, she saw her own children go on to graduate-level work in law, architecture, art, and art history. Married nearly 65 years, Lila and Glen were devoted to one another and rarely apart. Retiring to St. George, they divided their time among the San Juan Islands, B.C., Canada; San Diego, Calif.; and St. George. They also traveled extensively - visiting many different countries, exploring museums and ancient ruins, watching birds, learning about other cultures and making new friends. Lila is survived by her three children - Pamela Root of New York, NY, Stephen Peglau of Falmouth, Great Britain, and Michael Peglau of Madison, NJ - her seven grandchildren, her dear sister Flora Mae (Robert) Steed of St. George and a half-sister Crystal Lucy Fawcett. Her other siblings, Rex, James and Muray preceded her in death. The family gratefully acknowledges the considerate, attentive care of the staff of Cliff View Senior Living and Zion's Way Hospice. Lila's intelligence and vitality left a vivid impression on all who knew her. Arrangements under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary.
Published in the Salt Lake Tribune from 8/3/2008 - 8/6/2008
Joseph Larry Winger (1936-2008) Obituary

Logan Herald Journal, 07/07/08

PRESTON, Idaho - Joseph Larry Winger, our loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son and brother, returned to his Heavenly Father on July 5, 2008, due to complications from diabetes. He was born Aug. 1, 1936, in Preston, Idaho, to Joseph Nowland and Zilla Talbot Winger, being the oldest of four children. He has many loving memories of growing up in Winder, Idaho, and hunting down through hollows with his dog, Butch. As a teenager, Larry developed his talent in voice, which has enriched us all throughout his life.
He married Beverly Ransom on May 4, 1955. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. They were married for 52 years. Larry and Beverly first made their home in West Valley City, Utah, where Larry worked at Kennecott and Hercules while earning a degree in elementary education at Brigham Young University. After receiving his degree, he moved his family back to Preston, where he was employed for more than 25 years, not only as an elementary school teacher but also as a custodian and groundskeeper. He eventually bought his father's farm in Winder, Idaho. Larry enjoyed dabbling on the farm, raising a variety of farm animals, growing a large garden, nurturing a fruit orchard and starting groves of trees. Later in life, Larry and Beverly moved back to Preston and, once again, Larry took joy in landscaping his yard.
Larry was always kind and thoughtful of those around him. He served in several bishoprics and other church callings. He especially enjoyed being an umpire for Young Women's softball games. He is remembered for his beautiful tenor voice, singing as a soloist for his children and grandchildren as well as for musicals, church programs, weddings, funerals and other special occasions. His greatest joys, however, were spending time with and being actively involved in the lives of his family and, because of this, his memories will be cherished by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, mother and siblings. He was always there for us when we needed him most.
Larry is survived by his wife, Beverly; three daughters, Robyn (Reed) Blau, Melanie Hollingsworth and Laurie Jo (Mike) Earley; two sons, Todd (Georgia) and Shawn; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; his mother, Zilla Buchanan; sister, Rhonda (Sheldon) Barfus; and his brother, Edward (Marie). He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Nowland; brother, Doyle; two granddaughters, Heather and Holly Jo Hollingsworth; and three great-grandchildren, Larry Joseph Blau, LaCayden Jo and Preslee Rodriguez.
Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, in the Whitney 2nd Ward Chap
