Lester John Miles (1916 - 2009) Obituary

Logan Herald Journal, 11/06/09

PRESTON, Idaho - Lester John Miles, 93, recently of Preston, Idaho, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday night, Nov. 3, 2009. He is remembered as a man who devotedly lived his faith and served his Savior since his conversion to Christ at the age of 19.
He was born on July 1, 1916, the youngest child of Lester Daniel and Susan Rosalin Truax Miles, both of Michigan. His father was a Methodist pastor. John attended high school in the Allegan, Mich., district, graduating in 1934. He then spent one year at Hope College, transferring to Taylor University to finish his undergraduate work. He earned his master's degree at Dallas Theological Seminary. Following seminary graduation in 1942 he helped to establish a Christian Servicemen's center near Battle Creek, Mich., during the war. Returning to his hometown of Wayland, Mich., he took up the pastorate of the Wayland Methodist Church. A few years later that congregation became Calvary Church of Wayland under his leadership. While pastoring there, he married Evelyn G. Nysewander in Wabash, Ind., on May 30, 1945. Soon after their marriage, he and Rev. Malcolm Cronk of Grand Rapids, Mich., began the School of the Bible and Music. While still pastoring in Wayland, after two years on the faculty, John became the president of the school and served in that role full-time until 1988. After his retirement, he was called back to serve as pastor of the Calvary church of Wayland for eight more years. In 1996 he and his wife moved to St. George, Utah, where he was involved in Southland Bible Church as a teacher and counselor, a church established by his son Tim. In 1999 he and Evelyn moved to LaGrange, Wyo., where he became an instructor at Frontier School of the Bible, a Bible Institute in the mold of his former school in Grand Rapids. The school's president is his youngest son, Nelson. He taught at the school until 2007. Near the end of his teaching time at the school he began preaching at the Hull Methodist Church near LaGrange and continued in that position until the couple moved to Preston, Idaho, in May of this year to live with their daughter and son-in-law Gloria and Bill Bagley. Retirement in the classic sense was not in his vocabulary and his lifetime motto, which he expressed often to family, friends, fellow ministers and students, was: "Preach the word and love the people!"
John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Gilberta Miles, of Preston; and four children, Gloria (Bill) Bagley, of Preston; Tim (Joy) Miles, of St. George; Bruce (Donna) Miles, of Frisco, Colo.; and Nelson (Cheryl) Miles, of LaGrange, Wyo.; 15 grandchildren, many of whom are in full-time Christian ministry; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces and their children whom are also engaged in full-time Christian service. He was preceded in death by his parents; six siblings, Nelson Miles, George Miles, Charles Miles, Trett Dobson, Ruth Krick, and Avis Sponable; and a grandson, David Miles, son of Bruce and Donna Miles.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Grace Fellowship Church in Preston, Idaho, at 16 N. State St., under the direction of Webb Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Riverdale Cemetery. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Frontier School of the Bible in John's name and will be used to assist married students in attending and completing their training at the Bible Institute where John faithfully served. The school's address is: P.O. Box 217, LaGrange, WY, 82221. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.webbmortuary.com.

Published in Logan Herald Journal from November 6 to November 20, 2009

Norman Allen Ricks (1925-2009) Obituary

Idaho State Journal, 10/22/09

PRESTON - It is hard to say how we will be remembered, but it is certain we want to end up better each day. Our husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, Norm Ricks, sought constantly to be a better person as his life, which ended peacefully on October 20, 2009, progressed.
Norm was born in Benson, Utah, to Joseph Allen and Idella Hannah Thompson Ricks on April 20, 1925. He worked hard on his father's farm, served in World War II, and graduated from USU with a bachelor's in business.
Only July 1, 1949, he married LaRee Baxter Ricks, and they were later sealed in the Logan LDS temple. Over the years and through the struggles, they fell truly in love until they were temporarily separated by LaRee's death in 1998. Together they raised four children. Norman married Betty Jean Seamons on August 21, 1999, and they have enjoyed many great times together over the last 10 years.
Norm was very persistent! He worked hard in life as an accountant, insurance agent, and Rotary Club member. He refused to retire until he was 83; but his persistence is perhaps best illustrated by his determined fight against Parkinson's disease for more than two decades.
He loved to fish, spend time with family, and watch the Utah Jazz or Aggie football. He delighted in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Keeping a tidy desk, honorable credit and a healthy yard and garden were important to him. He served faithfully in many callings in the LDS Church over his lifetime. His pleasant demeanor was punctuated with humor and a ready smile.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; three daughters, Marsha Kaufman of Preston, Idaho, Nancy (Ken) Stout of Newdale, Idaho, and Paula (Jay) Critchlow of Sandy, Utah; a son, Lon Norman (Beverly) Ricks of Newdale, Idaho; five stepchildren, Peggy, Tony, Debra, Warren, and Brian; and a brother, Reed T. Ricks of St. George, Utah. His posterity includes 32 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and he has over 30 step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Norman was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Farrell Dean Ricks and William Max Ricks, a sister, Lorraine Ricks Hawkins, his first wife, LaRee Baxter Ricks, and a grandson, Jeremy Lon Ricks.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 24, 2009, at noon in the Preston Third Ward LDS Chapel on 155 North Second West in Preston, Idaho. A viewing will be held Friday, October 23 at Webb Funeral Home at 109 East Oneida, Preston, Idaho, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. The interment will follow at the Preston Cemetery.
Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.webbmortuary.com.

Published in Idaho State Journal on October 21, 2009

Dad's siblings are Ramona Rasmussen (deceased), Juanita Jamison, Lola Talbot (deceased), Goldie Roskelley, Maggie Howell, Ivan Talbot (deceased), Blanche Pyper and LaVern Talbot. Dad was raised in Winder, Idaho, on the family farm. His memories of hard work include thinning and topping beets, haying and thrashing grain, milking cows and cranking the washer for his mother. Dad always had a story about the fun times around the farm, like hunting pheasants, training and riding horses, and in the evening playing Rook with his family and attending the community dances. As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dad was called on a full-time mission to the land of our ancestors where his great-grandparents joined the church: South Africa. Dad moved to Ogden, Utah, where he met his sweetheart, Vera Dye, of Uintah. Their first date was riding the roller coaster at Lagoon (something Mom hasn't done since). They were married in the Logan LDS Temple on March 4, 1953. They were blessed with three children: Earl John, Diane and Bruce Dye. Family vacations were important to our parents; we have many memories of those wonderful vacations. Throughout Dad's life, most of his church callings were centered on missionary work. Dad is a high priest, and a highlight of his life was working in the Ogden LDS Temple baptistry. Dad is survived by his devoted wife Vera of 56 years; Earl and Marygail Talbot of Ogden; Diane Westergard of Farr West; and Bruce and Evelyn Talbot of South Jordan; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by four sisters and one brother. Len Westergard, his son-in-law, preceded him in death.
Daniel Bingham Gilbert (1951-2009) Obituary

Idaho State Journal, 08/26/09

POCATELLO — Daniel Bingham Gilbert, 58, passed away peacefully at his home in Pocatello, Idaho, on a beautiful rainy, Sunday, August 23, 2009, following a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS).
Dan was the third of six children (Jim, Leslie, Dan, Sky, Nicolen, and Lisa). Dan was born on June 12, 1951, to Frank Barlow Gilbert and Carol Bingham Gilbert, in Logan, Utah. He attended school at Central and Jefferson elementary, and graduated Preston High School in 1969. He graduated from Utah State University with a bachelor’s degree in big game management with a desire to pursue Fish and Game.
When he graduated the industry was slow and so he turned to law enforcement, where he became a patrol officer for 20 years and a DARE officer for 10 years at the local elementary schools. During these 10 years he taught over 5,000 students about drug awareness. Being a DARE officer was his passion. He loved the children and in turn they loved him. He always said that he couldn’t remember all their names but would never forget their smiles. He also enjoyed participating in the Shop with a Cop program each Christmas season.
He married the love of his life, Tamara Gay Sorensen on November 21, 1980, in the LDS temple in Logan, Utah. They have five children, Nicole (David) Lee, Christina, Tyler (Camille), Travis, and Shayla. They currently have two grandchildren, Kennon and Isaac Lee.
Dan’s hobbies included almost anything in the outdoors. He loved rifle and bow hunting as well as fishing. He taught his kids both and took them on many fun adventures. Another hobby of his was horseback riding and cattle round-up with his family, friends, and sometimes his children.
He loved camping and hiking and would drive to the middle of nowhere with his family to spend the week. It was always an adventure and allowed us to explore what no one else had yet explored. He enjoyed and was very good at swimming. Dan also loved his “girls” (chickens), and could always be found out back sleeping in a chair with them gathered around his feet.
When he was younger Dan played third-chair trombone, and wrestled. Another of Dan’s loves was Scouting. He had the opportunity to attended Wood Badge clinic and loved teaching the younger Scouts about survival in the outdoors. He could tell you the name of almost any bird, tree, bug, or flower. Family members frequently called him to find out what type of insect they had found.
He loved nature and had a great appreciation for its beauty. He and his friend Don Kendall donated eggs to schools so the kids could study and enjoy the hatching of baby chicks.
Dan was very active in his church callings as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many capacities such as bishopric, elder’s quorum president, high priest group leader, Scoutmaster, home teacher, deacon’s quorum adviser and ward mission leader.
Dan was a soft-spoken man who didn’t often share personal feelings, but through action, he bore great testimony of what he believed in. Dan loved his Savior, Jesus Christ, and strived to become more like him. He had two sons who chose to serve missions for the church, because of his great example, and because he taught them selfless service throughout his life.
He was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease on December 14, 2006. Dan fought hard and kept a positive attitude to the very end. Despite his efforts, the disease overtook many aspects of his physical body. In spite of this, his good attitude and great sense of humor provided relief and laughter to those close to him. Although it was hard for him to communicate toward the end, Dan loved visitors and had many. On a beautiful, rainy, Sunday, August 23, 2009, Dan passed away quietly with his family close by.
Dan is survived by his wife of almost 29 years, Tamara, of Pocatello, Idaho; five children, Nicole (David) Lee, Utah, Christina, Pocatello, Tyler (Camille), Pocatello, Travis, currently on a mission in Chihuahua , Mexico, and Shayla, Pocatello; two grandchildren, Kennon and Isaac Lee; his father, Barlow (Cheryl); brother, Jim (Kris); sister, Leslie (Bill); brother, Sky (Kim); sister, Lisa (Dave); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Carol Bingham, his sister, Nicolen, his sister-in-law, Linda Johnson, and his father-in-law, Weldon Hyde Sorensen.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the ALS foundation to help further their research. Donations can be sent to: The ALS Association, Development Department, 27001 Agoura Road, St. 250, Calabasas Hills, Calif. If you would like to make donations directly to the family, there is a Gilbert fund set up at Wells Fargo.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for all the sacrifices, services, support and friendship that were so selflessly given in Dan’s behalf, before and after his passing. They would also like to thank Colonial Funeral Home, Quality Home Health Care, Creekside, Dr. Bromberg and staff from University of Utah Neurological Center, and especially the wonderful caregivers who quickly became his friends, for their devoted and loving service to our sweet husband, loving father, and unforgettable grandfather.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2009, at the Pocatello West Stake Building at 3444 Hawthorne Road. A viewing will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 2009, at the same location and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the services. He voluntarily left school when he was 14 and worked with men loading spud sacks into Sugar City train cars to help support his mother and younger brothers and sisters. On April 21, 1943, he enlisted in the American Armed Forces. During World War II, he served in the Asiatic Pacific with the 314th Quartermaster Company stationed on Guadalcanal. He served his God and country with faith and courage and received an honorable discharge on Feb. 28, 1946. Returning home from overseas, he married Lorayne Johnson. And, true to his belief in love and family, he worked hard hauling milk in the Sugar City/Rexburg area. Later he became an expert carpenter to support his wife and five little girls. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Grant served a two-year home mission. On March 4, 1978, he married Susan R. Peck, and with love and laughter raised a new little stepdaughter. Grant's second love in life was horses, and in the early '70s he fulfilled a dream of his: He built a training stable in Riverton, Utah, working with show horses and racehorses. In the years that followed, he became one of the most honored and loved horse trainers in the Intermountain Circuit. Retiring in 1980, he moved with his wife and stepdaughter back to his beloved Idaho. His passion and love for the wonder of the horse never ceased and to the day of his passing he wanted to throw his leg over his bay mare that he named Joy. "Our Cowboy," with that wonderful smile showing from beneath his cowboy hat, will never be forgotten. His lack of formal education never stopped him. He became a self-taught man. At the age of 58 he became a writer. Discovering that writing longhand was cumbersome and time consuming, he learned to type and later became proficient on the computer. With his twinkling eyes and smile he would say, "I've got rejection slips from the East Coast to the West Coast." And although never published, Grant has written three novels, numerous short stories and many poems. He loved the outdoors and marveled at the beauty of God's creations as evidenced in all of his writings, which he continued until his passing. It is a legacy he has left for family and friends. At the age of 61 he became a dairy farmer. It was only a small herd of about 20 registered Jerseys, but his friends and neighbors in Weston will never forget his devotion and love in the care of his beautiful brown cows. At age 64 he became a landscape artist and at 72 he became interested in painting life-like ceramics. His family and friends have a memory of Grant in their homes. He is survived by his wife, whom he lovingly called Susie; and by his daughters, Jana Simons of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Kathy (Lonnie) Stone of Salt Lake City, Utah, Debbie Ballard of Salt Lake City, Marcia (Bill) King of Salt Lake City and Margo Harris and Jill of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; his stepdaughter, Tammy (Guy) Orr of Everton, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Doyle Harris of Salt Lake City; a sister, Elaine Thompson of Longmont, Colo.; and a sister, LaRee Probart of Payette, Idaho. He was preceded in death by a loved granddaughter, Melissa King; four sisters, Zola Jacobs, Beulah Johnson, Gertie Henderson and Rena Lenderman; and two brothers, Lamoyne Harris and Gordon Harris. Funeral services will he held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in the Linrose Ward LDS Chapel in Dayton, Idaho. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Webb Funeral Home, 109 E. Oneida, Preston, Idaho, and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. Military rites and interment will be at the Dayton Cemetery.
