Custer county. My grandmother was always talking about growing up in Custer county. Her husband was Ivan. She was a Brown who's father was a mine attorney I believe (I don't remember his name). She had two sisters Hazel and another I don't recall. Her mother was a O'Halleran (sp?) from New Orleans. Her parents moved to Challis after their tin shop burned down. I believe they ran or lived in a hotel with their daughter and son-in-law. My grandmother's name was Helen Blume (Brown) and they had three boys. Milt and Ted and Ray. The name of a fellow names Jewels Blume I think came up a number of times. Any info on the Blume's, Brown's or O'Halleran's would be greatly appreciated.

Ted Blume

In 2000 I wrote the following message:
"In 1936, my uncle, WIlliam Garfield Burcher, was in the CCC's in Mackay, Custer, Idaho. He met an young girl, Zelva Jean Lambson who lived with her family there. He stayed until 1939 when he entered the Navy. In December of 1939 he made it home to the Lambson's for his one and only leave. His ship was sunk, the USS Langley and then his rescue ship was sunk, the USS Pecos in 1942. I have about two dozen of Jean's letters to Bill's mother, Bessie Burcher in Somerton, Belmont County, Ohio and would dearly love to get in touch with anyone who knows what happened to Jean."

Since that time both my dad, Edward Benajah Burcher and my Aunt, Alice Burcher Conaway have died leaving my one uncle alone. If there is anyone out there with information on Zelva Jean, Please email me-it would really mean lot to all of us.

Hi,
My ancestor, James A. Comer, was a barber (owned his shop) in McCall in 1910. I was wondering if there were any places that might have photos of the town from that time--besides the Idaho Historical Society that is.
Thanks for any help!
Sincerely,
Stephanie Sanderson

In 1936, my uncle, WIlliam Garfield Burcher, was in the CCC's in Mackay, Custer, Idaho. I have about two dozen of Jean's letters to Bill's mother, Bessie Burcher in Somerton, Belmont County, Ohio and would dearly love to get in touch with anyone who knows what happened to Jean.

Searching for information regarding my grandmother, Eirie Carlyle Miller, my grandfather, George Macon Miller, and any other relatives. I understand they are buried in the cemetery in Mackay, Custer County, Idaho. Eirie Carlyle, born 9 Aug 1883 in Indiana, was first married in Pueblo Colorado to a Clarence Overbeck (Verbeck). She later traveled out to Idaho and married George Macon Miller on 01/01/1918. Eirie had several siblings including a Victoria and a Paul Carlisle. Her father, Thomas Carlile, may also have lived in Custer County. George Macon Miller was born 01/14/89 in Apache County, AZ. He also had a brother, William Alonzo Miller, who may have lived in the Mackay area. The father of George Macon Miller is believed to be a William Robert Miller, who arrived in the Mackay area with two brothers, Sam and Bob Miller, sometime after 1895. I believe William Robert Miller lived in Challis before his death but was buried in Mackay, Custer County, Idaho. I would appreciate any and all information concerning these individuals and those related to them. Thank you.
Mount McCaleb Cemetery, Mackay, Idaho Online

The Mount McCaleb Cemetery (photo attached) is now available on-line via computer at:
http://www.findagrave.com

This free, searchable internet site allows anyone with internet access to visit the graves of friends and relatives. The findagrave.com site is divided into famous and non-famous internments. To find the Mount McCaleb Cemetery, click on ?Search for a Cemetery? on the right side of the page ?Find Grave?. You will need to spell Mount McCaleb out as the site will not recognize Mt. McCaleb.

Click on ?Idaho? and then click ?Search?. A box will appear. Click on the underlined number at the right and all of the graves listed for Mount McCaleb Cemetery will appear in alphabetical order. You can use the left column ?Actions? toolbar to search for individual names at Mount McCaleb Cemetery or any other cemetery.

If you cannot find a grave on the findagrave.com site, then no one has entered the data related to the burial to date or perhaps the spelling was incorrect. If you know of a grave at Mount McCaleb Cemetery that is not included, you can enter it yourself or let me know. So far, I have entered over 1,327 graves at Mount McCaleb Cemetery. The site allows anyone to add photographs to individual graves. I have tried to include a picture of each headstone, although this is still a work in progress. The findagrave.com site compresses (makes smaller) pictures and to see a clearer image, be sure to click on the picture itself revealing a larger picture.

This internet site is great for genealogists and anyone that cannot get out to the cemetery in person.
I am currently researching my Great Grandparents Charles and Francis (Cooper) Ernst. In 1915 they murdered a man on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. They had been living in Challis shortly before this happened and had a son at Robertson Bar, Idaho named Charles Jr. He was only 1 1/2 years old when this incident happened. The man my Great Grandparents shot was named Julius (Jake) Rehburg.
I am looking for anyone who may know anything further about this incident or anything about any of the individuals involved in this incident. Through my research I have found out that my Great Grandfather had a mining buddy named Bill Sullivan. His last known residence was in Custer, Idaho. I have reason to believe that he may still be alive today. If so then he is probably quite old, but I would love to be able to speak with him. Any information I could recieve would be greatly appreciated.

Anges Elizabeth King aka Lizzie King

I am looking for any information of Anges Elizabeth King. She is buried in the Boot Hill Cemetary above Bonanza City, Idaho located in Custer County. Lizzie was married to Richard King who died in a gunfight in a saloon that she owned. She then married Robert Hawthorn. Shortly after they were wed, they were both killed in their home. There is some mystery surrounding the deaths as there was another man involved. Lizzie was friends with the gentleman and everyone seemed to think they would be married, instead she married Robert. Since there was so much scandel surrounding her death, three lonely graves stand a mile above the town cemetary as the townspeople refused to buried their loved ones with Lizzie. Years later, Lizzie's gentleman friend was found dead in a cabin near Stanley with a locket clutched in his hand; her picture inside. I would like to follow her bloodlines as far back as I can and any interesting stories would be helpful. I have read the story in "Land of the Yankee Fork" and have visited her grave many times. I'm still intrigued by her and would like to find out as much information as I possibly can. Any help in this matter would be terrific. Please feel free to e-mail me with any information.
Their daughter Etta May Wilson m. Celeste Branca @ Challis(?) and had Kathleen 1893 and Joseph 1895 in Bayhorse, Custer Co. ID. By 1889 John & Rebecca were in Kittitas Co., WA. By 1899 Etta was m. to Fred. W. Smith & near her parents in WA. Seek info on Celeste and Branca family, date wed, died, etc.
* The John A. & Rebecca on the 1880 Ada Co.
Just read your story on Lost River (Custer Co.) schools of the "olden times".
I spent 8 years in that "one room frame building" at Pass Creek, and durned if I didn't always
think it was a TWO room building. Which it was. It was built for two class rooms, had two large coal stoves,
one in each room. Each class room was about 25 feet wide, and about 40 feet deep, with another 10 feet
for cloak rooms, library books, and storage. And cold as @(_0 in the winter. In inclement weather,
the kids used the empty room as a play room.
The desks had been removed and stacked up alongside one wall.
If a desk got broken by some "ruffian" eight grader,
there was a built in supply of new desks.
I left there in 1934, but both my brothers finished the
eighth grade there. I don't know what year it was
moved to Mackay, Custer, Idaho.
Three of my most memorable teachers were Ruby Long,
Georgia Purdue(Olson), and Byron Sherman
Vol #1, page 150, under;
Meyers Cove, Idaho
by William Wilson. page 151,
has the information regarding Emil Reberg. He was a resident of the Middle Fork in 1917. This article goes into detail of what you are asking for. I do not want to put that information on this on this board. If you will send me your email address. I will forward this story to you. Or you can look it up yourself. From the story you get the feeling that Charles Ernst was a cold blooded person. The Ernsts were convicted and served a short sentence in Boise, IDaho.

Henry Johnson living in Mackay, Custer Co., Idaho and Esther Jackson, Mackay, applied for a marriage license 1 March 1919. Believe Henry was at one time working as a mail carrier (1917) in Mackay. I have also found Henry listed in the 1910 Census Index in Houghton Co., MI. Siblings listed were Edward, Milford, Roy and Levie. Mother Katie and father Effren (various spellings include Efraim and Ephriam.) Believe other siblings not listed in 1910 Census index included Lizzie, Lena and Elsie. Believe Henry is my great uncle. Would appreciate hearing from any relatives of anyone listed. Thank you.

Willard Elliot BOWEN Married Rosa Alma [GRAVES} ST JOHN on Sep 15, 1914 in Patterson, Lemhi Co., ID. I believe their Son Roy Elliot was also born there on October 19, 1915. If anyone has any knowledge about he above please contact me. Also are there any City Directories available for Patterson circa 1910-1930. Also is there a local Library. I am planning on being in Patterson around the 19-23 of June this year. Rosa's uncle Charles Baker Graves ran a Grocery store there for quite some years. He and his wife Anna Clara Kohring are buried there.

Henry Johnson

Irene: Thanks for your help and the tip! Will check out the web site. I do not recognize the cemetary record information at all. Henry Johnson was born 31 Dec 1890 in Calumet, Michigan and his father Efraim Johnson was born in Finland and arrived in the US in 1880. I was not clear on the birth date of this individual's record, but if he served in the Civil War he is probably not connected. Was he born in 1924-34? What is the Sept. 1910 date? I am not sure if my Henry served in the military at all, but he did register for the civilian draft registration for WW I in Custer, Idaho. If you do find an Elizabeth, would appreaciate the information and I have since found out my grandmother's name (Lena) was actually Olga Elina Johnson! Thanks again for your help!
On 30 Dec 19898
Is there someone to look up Custer County to look up death,
obituary, Cemetery, etc? My great grandfather came to
Challis in about 1897. From Topeada, Ks. And doed there in 1901. I think the city hired him to be the city doctor as he had just gotten his medical degree from the U of Kansas Medical school. He was just 36 when he died and I daon't know what he died of or where he is burried. After his death his widow and three children moved in with relatives in Oregon. His name was Spencer L Rogers
Stephen Rogers von Hitritz in Richmond, Va
