Thanks for taking the time to respond to my post. I appreciate it. I already have both the 1930 and 1940 census records and have tried searching in earlier censuses for Kathleen based on the limited info in those later censuses but no luck yet. I am also familiar with requesting the SSN application - I'm just not sure I want to spend $27 yet so I was looking for other ways (like hopefully an obituary or something similar). Thanks again for your help.

I have been in contact with Snyder and Bonner cousins. Have photos of Carr's - if you let me know your Carr line I might have a photo for you.

All the records I found spelled the last name "Schwarz". Albert married Anna Ruth Allen 1 Sep. 1894 at Whatcom Co., WA. She was born 29 Jan. 1874 at Honey Grove, TX, parents William Allen and Lydia Mullins. Census records indicate Albert and Annie moved to Idaho around 1907. Albert died 7 Aug. 1939 at Orofino, Clearwater, ID. Annie died 27 Sep. 1941 at Lewiston, Nez Perce, ID. Albert and Annie are both buried at Riverside Cemetery in Orofino.

First, the family story of your GG/Aunt being asthmatic and died of an overdose, by itself, may or may not be true depending on family lore. But, if she was an inpatient at the North Idaho Asylum, that gives a much less value to this family lore. As an inpatient, her medication would have been limited to that given by doctors/ nurses/ medical staff.

Most States are highly protective of the rights of those voluntarily and involuntarily admitted into mental hospitals. Some of these States protect this information even after death. The verbiage of the statutes in Idaho indicate these laws extend to after death. Only until recently were records made available to identify those patients who were buried in State Hospital Cemeteries in Washington State.

This is the primary Idaho statute concerning mental health patent records:
Idaho Statutes:
Title 66: State Charitable Institutions;
Chapter 3: Hospitalization of Mentally Ill http://legislature.idaho.gov/idstat/Title66/T66CH3.htm
66-348: Disclosure of Information http://legislature.idaho.gov/idstat/Title66/T66CH3SECT66-348...
Basically says: If the person or his attorney consent; or if necessary to carry out ...(laws)... or if the court directs disclosure is necessary...

Title 9: Evidence
Chapter 3: Public Writings
9-340C. Records Exempt from Disclosure... Paragraph 6
http://legislature.idaho.gov/idstat/Title9/T9CH3SECT9-340C.h...

Her death certificate if issued by the State Asylum, or if identifies mental state, it is NOT releasable. UNLESS, you obtain a court order for release. Mere curiosity has been shown to not be a valid reason for release of confidential information. If you could prove a need to have the medical information to protect yourself or family, the court "might" take interest. If they did, they would review your petition, then review any and all documents subject to release to verify a legitimate need for release. But, in this case, I don't believe any medical history would be released. The court "might" release information as to the place of burial.

IF she was NOT a patient, you can order a NON-Certified copy of her death certificate for $14.00. There are other restrictions for a CERTIFIED copy:
http://healthandwelfare.idaho.gov/Health/VitalRecordsandHeal...
You could apply for her death certificate, if it is falls under the Idaho Statute for protection, ALL you can be told is there is no record. Legally, they can not tell you she was a patent, or the DC is protected.

If her death was due to overdose, or she had been an inpatient, the family probably would not have identified this in an obituary. You could try to obtain one, there is a volunteer here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~obitl/voli...

I base my comments above on my experience with Washington State and California attempts (CA for a friend) to obtain records. At one point, I was sent an impressive stack of papers to apply for court order for disclosure for Washington State. These mental health records are much like adoption records. They not only protect the person from disclosure; but also the family. I doubt you would like someone to obtain mental health records of your aunt to embarrass you.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Hi,
Yes, Idaho is restrictive on their release of records but 50 years after a death and if you meet the criteria, you should be able to order a copy of her death certificate.

Go to the Clearwater County Auditor, Recorder and Clerk of the District Court web site, clearwatercounty.org/?Auditor1 for contact info.

The Idaho Genealogical Society, 208-384-0542 might also have this info.

Contact the Clearwater Public Library, manta.com/c/mmcr87b/clearwater-public-library about requesting a copy of her obituary and any death article. Successful Searching!

Is there any hope? I have found a death record in the BYU special collection but not burial information. I have heard that getting information from the state about inmates in the asylum is near impossible. Has anyone had any luck? This is my GG Aunt, Lassie G Giles died 1956. The family story is that she was severely asthmatic and died of an overdose. Would love to know if the story is true.

HI,

Thanks for the replies. The ID State Historical Society just supplied his obituary.

The obituary is part of a high school reunion project I've been working on since last October. We've already compiled a list of graduates, their former classmates, and all of the teachers and other staff members of my hometown's school - Trout Lake, WA. For this year's reunion (which is held every 3 years) we are creating a Memorial Book to help better remember those listed above who have passed away. We are hoping to include a photograph of these people with their obituaries. We've also collected several dozen class photographs and have been busy identifying the students.

Thanks again for your help,
Jeff Elmer
Portland, OR.

Hi Ron,
Yes, I have those census records, her mother's, sisters' obituaries. Apparently Ida was either divorced for years, or was a widow for years.
I saw the item on the digital archives. Doesn't seem to be her.
I also prefer proof, and had some false information before I found she had died in Idaho and not Washington. I believe she married in Oklahoma and have been looking for proof of that.
Two of her brothers went to California, where they died and are buried.
Marriage information for her has been my brick wall.
Thanks for all your work.

Dorothy,
Looks like I try to help you again. I did find a possible spouse for your possible Ida. While the Ida found in Idaho matches the criteria for being the daughter of Albert and Malissa; and matches criteria to be the spouse of John Frances Crowley... As you may have noticed in my past postings, I need PROOF. Except for name and basic criteria, I haven't seen proof this is the same person. You may have the proof in your family records, if so, they great. If not, you'll need to find some.

Hope the below helps in some manner. I looked in the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness for a volunteer...none found. If no one responds here, you might have to ultimately pay for a photo of the headstone. And after paying... I HOPE it has some proof to it.

The Ida Gray as described is in the 1900 Census in two locations with her family:

The 1900 Census for Cottonwood, Cumberland Co, Illinois, enumerated the 13/14 of June.
Malissa, born IL, to father born in South Carolina, mother in IL, married 17 years, mother of 7, 6, living
Harry C, Oct 1884
Ida, Mar 1889
James L, Nov 1890
Ethal(sic) I/L ? July 1893
Agnes, Mar 1897
Anna, Nov 1898

The 1900 Census for Hennessey, Kingfisher Co, OK. Enumerated July 5th.
Albert L, Nov? 1860, born in IL to father born in Arkansas?, mother in Illinois.
Malissa E, X 22nd, 1862, mother of 7, 7 living
Harry C, Oct 1884
Edna M, ? 1886
Ida H, Mar? 1888, 11 (if she was born in 1888 she would have been 12
James L, Nov 29, 1890
Ethel I, ? 1894
Agnes M, ? 1897
Anna C, Nov 1898

The 1910 Census for Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Harry C "GREY", born in IL, railroad conductor. Head
Mallissa, mother, showing as 48, born in IL, mother of 8, 7 living
James L, 19, son (of Mallissa)
Ruth C, daughter 4
Agnes, daughter 13
Ethel 20, wife, married 1/12.

The 1930 Census for Spokane identifies an Ida Crowley as being married 3 years (May 1926/April 1927) Census enumerated April 1930. She was 40, born in Illinois to both parents born in Illinois (At least that matches)

--Go to http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/default.aspx enter the name Ida Crowley. Click on her name. Then on Marriage Records. As you can see she married John F. Crowley. Click on that line to get to the image.
--They married in Spokane. BUT, this marriage license shows this Ida "Grey" as being born in West Virginia. This person was Ida Sybil "Grxy"(overwritten), age "Legal", this person's father was A.E. "Grxy"(again overwritten) born in England, and mother was Marian E. Michael, born in Scotland. This marriage occured on January 11, 1927. The parents information does not match at all.
--John F is 32, a widower, born in Washington, a civil engineer, son of Leon Crowley, born Mass., and Nellie E. Sullivan, born Ireland.

The World War I Draft Registration Card Image Database has a John Frances Crowley, born April 8, 1896 in North Yakima, living in Valley (south of Chewelah), Washington. He was a civil engineer for the American Mineral? Production Co. He was single.

Ida Crowley is listed on the Idaho Death Index, Death Certificate 002231. Have you obtained her death certificate. While the "facts" on a DC depend on the knowledge and accrucy of the respondent, it "might" identify the name of her husband. If he had died many years before, they were divorced, or if the respondent didn't know, it won't of course be on there. Crowley might not have been her first husband, thus problems in attempting to find her in the census.

Ron Bestrom

Thanks for the posts and suggestions.
Be assured that my interest is almost entirely genealogical.
I'm not a genealogist, but have been researching the Mallory Surname for over 40 years.
My query here is simply an effort to supplement
the Wikipedia Mallory pages, The Mallory Surname DNA Study and companion Rootsweb World Connect database.
I'd like to know more about how the Creek came to be called Mallory.
