Hole In The Rock Stage Stop
I have a transcript of a letter written in February 1872 from Hole in the Rock, Idaho. It came from Augustus Wildey, a man who had spent 20 years bouncing around the west in mining camps, and was to a sister of my great-grandmother. The couple married later that year in Iowa and I have been researching their family history.
From the stories of the Nez Perce flight through Idaho and Montana, it appears that Hole in the Wall was a stage stop on the road from Utah to Montana and was a few miles north of the present site of Dubois. Is there any written history of the stage stop or any evidence of the site today? I would assume the name came from a natural feature in the area, but can find no evidence of that in an Internet search.
