POW/MIA Korean War, Canyon Co, SHIRTZ

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Canyon County, Idaho (Kenyon) as his home of record.

Soldier: ALTON LEONARD SHIRTZ
Born: 1919
Date of loss: November 30, 1950 POW
Service # RA39682225
A Btry 38th Field Art Btn, 2nd inf Division

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are five families from Idaho that have not been located. There are one family from Canyon County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Green Arnold McWILLIAM (b. 1877 OR) married Lula Schuck/Shuck (b.1876 ID) at Boise, ID on 8 Nov 1895; they were both residents of Caldwell, Canyon County. Are there records that might tell me more about this young couple? In the 1900 LaGrand, Union County, OR census, Green Arnold McWILLIAM was living in a boarding house and listed as married. (His family lived and died in Union Co. OR but he is not buried there.) Where was Lula in 1900 and how long did they live in Canyon County prior to their marriage? Did they die there? I would be glad for any clues.

Obit, Thomas N. BURNS, (1890 - 5 Dec 1930), Caldwell newspaper

Hello to all,

I would like to request the obituary in the newspaper serving Caldwell, Idaho for Thomas Newman BURNS who died December 5, 1930 in Portland, Oregon at age 41. He was born in or near Columbia County, Oregon in 1890. ...

I believe he will have an obit in the local newspaper for Caldwell. He was resident in Caldwell from the early 1920s and left behind in Caldwell his wife, Helen (Morgan) Burns, three children and his mother-in-law. He was the founder of Burns Chevrolet, now Chevrolet of Caldwell. ...

His brother, Florian Randal Burns, worked for him as a car salesman. Florian was also born in Oregon and died in Baker City, Oregon on 27 July 1941. Chances are, Florian does not have an obit in Caldwell. ...

Where in Canyon County are the microfilm holdings of local newspapers of this era? ... library?

Thank you,
Paul Annapolis, Maryland

I have 2 or more relatives who were in Ohio by the late 1860s. I will also post this in the Ada board.

Wm A Harman and Rachel E (Carter) Harman were only there (Boise Valley?) from 1867- early 1870 so probably isn't much on them.

Charles E. Carter and Nancy J "Jennie (Perry) Carter were there by 1870 census (Ada) and are still in Ada in 1889. By 1900 they are in East Caldwell, Canyon Co. and in 1910 & 1920 in Nampa.

Children - oldest to youngest - were: John E., Lilla R., Alta H., Bertha L., and Pearl.

There is strong circumstantial evidence that Charles is my 2nd great gpa's brother so I would like to get more info on Charles' family.
My Canyon County, Idaho, Headstone Photos and Obits Website

Just leaving a note to let you know about my website of free headstone photos and obits for Canyon County, Idaho. At this time I have about 14,500 names that have matching headstone photos, and an ever growing number of obits. The photos and obits will be sent by email.

Please, Please when you get to the homepage read the it fully before continuing on. The list that is shown is NOT all the names in any one cemetery, simply the names with headstone photos. So if you can't see your Aunt Mildred's name on the list, it doesn't mean she isn't buried in that cemetery. There are a list of about 12 cemeteries in the county. Because of the way I take the photos, by sections of the cemeteries, I very much regret to say that I don't do requests. I try to find maiden and middle names and include those on the names, hence it isn't an exact match to what is stated on the headstone, but I have tried to add name info to help researchers.
One additional reminder. If the names are highlighted in red and state "More Info" then it is a link to an obit or other info. I also have a large list of what I call "Orphan Obits". These are obits of people that I don't have on my headstone photo list BUT they are still buried in Canyon County. Because of the convenience of using the Caldwell library and since they only have microfilm of the Caldwell newspaper, this is the only newspaper I am using to gather the obits.

I also get a bunch of photos or obits, or both together and then add to the website at once. I have a website update mailing list if you don't see your relative and wish to know when the website is updated. All new names will be sent to each on the mailing list.

Well, I kinda carried on here but I have spent a LOT of time building this website and have had a great time with all the response I have had. Great stories from people and great satisfaction with all the help it has been for others. Hope it will help you.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~holton/cempics/head...

legal issues pertaining to photographing headstones

I have been doing some volunteer work photographing headstones and was questioned recently by a cemetery sexton as to whether I was related to the family. I was not, so the sexton asked me to contact the family requesting the photo and have them mail a notarized letter to the sexton giving me permission to take the pictures. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this or knows of any legal issues that surrounds the practice of taking pictures.

Thank you for your response.
Anita

Need information on Buster Lewis Baker who was the police chief of Nampa at one time.I have no date for his employment. Buster was born 27 Oct 1919 in Miller,Buffalo,Nebraska. His mother MAY have been Martha May Baker. In the 1920 Census for Miller he is listed as the grandson of Lewis Squire Baker but his surname is not Baker but it is indisquishable(Heritage Quest has it as Cretawater but I don't believe this is what it really is.Martha appears to be the only daughter in the census who is of childbearing age.Buster moved on to Oregon where he died.Even if we could only have any information on him as police chief that would be nice.Thank you

I'm searching for any information on William Payne born 1821 in Ohio. According to family records, he died in Nampa, Canyon, Idaho. Can anyone do a look up on this limited information, I do not have a death date even year?
He was married to Mary Ann Pence (born 1832) in 1853. They had three children as far as I can tell all born in Iowa.
Adeline 1854
Edward M 14 Oct 1856
Armilda Amanda 1859
I cannot find them in census records after the Iowas State Census of 1856 where they are in Franklin, Des Moines, IA.
Except for Edward. I see him in 1900 in Boise, Idaho with his family. Wife Elizabeth Ann Burton, children: Wallace, Jessie, Eugene and Delmont. In 1910 he is a Bank President and I would be very interested to know what bank he was president of, if you know or know how to find out I would be very interested.
So I have this huge gap of time where I cannot find anything. Any information would be helpful as well as death date and burial place of William Payne.
Thanks,
sheesyb@yahoo.com

Vivian RODIG d.2004 - family in Canyon Co?

Looking for information and burial place of Vivian RODIG, who died 13 Sept 2004 in Parma.

Does anyone have easy access to newspapers, for an obituary? I believe this Vivian was the wife of Herbert C. Rodig, who resided in the Pasco, Washington area in the 1960's and 1970's. Herbert is buried in the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, and died in 1976.

Why did Vivian come to Parma? Does she have family here? Looking for living Rodig cousins.

Thanks so much for your help!

Tami Rodig Sherrill

I really need to find any children or grandchildren of these two people, if anyone can direct me to possible newspapers, libraries etc. so I could access them.

New Plymouth Sentinel
New Plymouth, Idaho
Thursday, December 20, 1917

Plunges to Death

The Nampa Record says that George Hamons met a tragic death last Thursday night when he stumbled from the top of a precipitous cliff to the rocky bottom of Rabbit creek, a distance of 75 feet. He left Matteson's state barn at Murphy Thursday evening carrying a shot gun, saying that he would take a stroll up Rabbit creek. That was the last seen of him alive. A Search was made and the body was found lying face down in the creek bed. The bones in the face were crushed and a rugged bolder made an ugly bruise over the heart causing his friends to conclude that the heart concussion was the immediate cause of death.

It appears that Hamons had cached some whiskey in that vicinity and his wanderings were made in an attempt to locate it in the darkness.

Payette Independent
Payette, Idaho
Thursday, May 14, 1903

Death of Col. W. H. Dewey

Colonel W. H. Dewey, who was probably the most widely known capitalist and promoter of Idaho, died at his home in Nampa early last Saturday morning. The cause of his death was dropsy and liver complications. Colonel Dewey was 81 years of age. He left an estate in the hands of his son, E. H. Dewey, valued at about $1,000,000. His career was a most adventurous one and marked him as a man remarkable in many respects. The history of his achievements in Idaho began in 1864 and he had always been a leading figure in some new venture and was always remarkably successful where others had predicted failure. His latest achievement was the erection of the magnificent Dewey palace hotel at Nampa, at a cost of over a quarter of a million dollars, where his death occurred.

He was one of the earliest pioneers of Idaho City, where he was in business for many years. From there he moved to Falk’s Store and remained for nine years, having conducted the postoffice and store at that place. For the last four years he was postmaster and engaged in mercantile business in Middleton, during which time he had won the esteem of all who knew him. During his career he was twice elected and twice defeated on the Democratic ticket for the legislature. He leaves a wife, Mrs. Clara Arrasmith Cave, who has but one relative in this part of the country, a nephew, C. C. Arrasmith of Boise. Mr. Cave is survived by two brothers, one in Montana and one in California.

Mr. Cave, shortly prior to his last illness, had been preparing a series of interesting “Recollections of Early Days In Idaho.” The few numbers which have been given to the public through the columns of the Middleton Herald were well received.

Note: He is buried in Middleton Cemetery, Middleton, ID. ch

I found an old photo of a old western looking town and the streets are flooded, on one of the building i see "Oklahoma Block 1903" and across the street there is a "Western Grocery Co." on the back it says "Roswell flood Oct." There is more but it has faded away. Does anyone know if this could be Roswell in Canyon Co.??

Thanks for your time,
Don Howell
