The “supervondogical” John B Nield passed away on March 7, 2018 with his eternal sweetheart, Sally by his side. John was born February 23, 1941 in Montpelier, Idaho, the 6th of 7 children born to LaVar B and Rhena Wilkes Nield. In high school, John was a 4-sport varsity athlete where he especially enjoyed playing football. John loved music and “rocked it” in his own band as lead singer. John served an LDS mission to the Eastern States Mission. He often told stories of his time spent in New York where he was one of 300 actors in the Hill Cumorah Pagent in 1961.
John married Karla Anne Nelson in 1963. They had 3 children, Kip, Tani and Suzette. John and Karla later divorced. He married Sally Robertson October 16, 1984, and adopted her two children, Rod, and Chrystal. They were sealed as a family on October 25, 1985 in the Provo, Utah temple. When asked how many children he had, he proudly said, “3 homemade, 2 adopted, and 5 eternal.” Sally, his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren brought him his greatest joy.
John earned his bachelor, master, and doctorate degrees in psychology education from Idaho State University with an emphasis in childhood development. His first teaching job as “Dr. Nield” was at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. Later he taught at UVCC and was instrumental in transitioning the psychology department from a community college to a 4-year program at the higher educational institution now known as UVU.
Throughout his life, John served in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served in many callings throughout his life. From nursery and early morning seminary teacher, to elder’s quorum president and stake Sunday school presidency, his was a life of service. His favorite callings were as ward mission leader in the Spanish Fork, 12th ward, at the Missionary Training Center, and as a temple worker at the Provo Temple where he served for several years. Though not a “church” assignment, he enthusiastically accepted the calling as BYU fan extraordinaire. A diehard BYU fan, John especially loved football.
John is survived by his eternal companion, Sally; his children Kip (Meggan) Nield of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Tani DeAdder of Spanish Fork, Suzette (Alex)Morrill, of Evanston, Wyoming, Rod (Sarah) Nield of Salt Lake City, Utah and Chrystal (Jason) Guerra of Santaquin, Utah. His brother Darrell Nield, of Spanish Fork, Utah, sister Mary Lou (Harold) Bunn of Montpelier, Idaho, 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents LaVar and Rhena (Wilks) Nield, 4 sisters and great-grandson, Remington.
Viewing will be held Friday, March 9 from 6pm-8pm at the Spanish Fork 12th Ward building located at 310 E. Center Street, Spanish Fork, Utah and again Saturday, March 10 from 12:45pm -1:45pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 10, at 2 Pm at the Spanish Fork 12th ward building.
