Verl I. Mumford
Jan. 24, 1924 ~ July 17, 2016
Verl I. Mumford, 92, of Vernal, died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on July 17, 2016. Verl was born on Jan. 24, 1924, in Montpelier, Idaho, to the proud parents Byron E. and Nora Mumford. He grew up in a loving family with wonderful childhood adventures. He attended high school in Montpelier. Soon after graduation, he served as a Missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Northern States Mission, Minnesota. Verl enlisted in the United States Army and served his country for three years. He was proud of his service and loved his country.
He attended Brigham Young University, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting.
Verl met his eternal companion, Irene Muir, while attending college and they were married on Nov. 26, 1958, at the Idaho Falls Temple. They resided in Montpelier for approximately 18 years. They moved to Vernal for employment at San Francisco Chemical, Chevron, then Simplot. Verl worked for the same company for 32 years.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, served in the church in many callings and was a faithful servant of the Lord. One of his hobbies was gardening, and he was quite good at it, after the harvest he would walk up and down the street pulling a little red wagon, giving away his crops to his neighbors. Verl also loved to cook. Verl and Irene loved to share hobbies together. They both took oil painting classes, in which Irene would help him with his colors because he was color blind, and yet his pictures were beautiful. Verl donated many keepsakes of his life to the Heritage Museum, his typewriter, his toys, his father's suit is on display (mannequin playing the piano wearing black suit) and many other items.
Verl's smile, great stories, his kindness and eagerness to do what was right will be missed deeply.
Verl is survived by his wife, Irene Mumford of Vernal; sister-in-law, Gloria Mumford of Salt Lake City; sister, Theo (Max) Holbrook of Orem; nephew, Gary (Jan) Mumford of Soda Springs, Idaho; nephew, Michael (Loretta) Mumford, of Gresham, Oregon; niece, Diana (Henry) Johnson of Salt Lake City; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, July 20, at the Glines 8th Ward LDS Chapel. Burial took place in the Montpelier, Idaho, Cemetery with Military Honors. www.blackburnvernal
