Sally Ann Bennett Barkdull
1934 ~ 2017
Sally Ann Bennett Barkdull, 82, passed away peacefully on 15 September 2017 at her home in Pleasant Grove, Utah. She was born in Pocatello, Idaho to Harold R and Dwinna Smith Bennett on 15 Nov 1934. She married Franklin D. Barkdull on 15 Nov 1958 in the Logan LDS Temple, Utah. She graduated from Pocatello High School in 1952 and received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Idaho State University in 1956. She later received a Masters degree in Psychiatric Nursing Education from University of Washington. She taught nursing at various educational institutions for the next few years. Mom was a wonderful teacher and I remember in 1969 her hauling us children through the jungles of Panama to a small village to teach the local people how to organize and conduct a church Primary meeting. Mom was ambitious and when she was 42 she decided to become a doctor and completed all her college pre-med course work. However, her children's teenage years intervened with those plans.
Later, she went back to work at several northern Virginia hospitals. She finally retired in 2001 as a Virginia Public Health nurse in Prince William County. She and Dad next served a volunteer Church Education System mission for the LDS church in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Mom enjoyed sewing and was a wonderful seamstress who could make just about anything she wanted. She enjoyed skiing, cooking, reading, exercising, travelling, and writing. Mom was an organizer from her earliest childhood days when she'd plan neighborhood circuses. Mom ran a tight ship at home raising five boys and a girl and once declared, "I won't clean up after all you boys by myself." So we learned to clean. But most of all, mom enjoyed visits with her children and in particular her 19 grandchildren and great grandson and visiting her numerous friends.
Mom and Dad were world travelers and would proudly tell their friends that they had a souvenir from every place they lived - their six children. Kansas, Morocco, Spain, Nebraska, Panama, and Ohio. One summer in 1970, they apparently lost their minds when they took us on a 7,600 mile family auto vacation from Panama, through central America, to Seattle and then across the U.S. to Ohio.
Sally is survived by her husband, Del Barkdull of Pleasant Grove. Her children, David (Kristy) of Colorado Springs, CO, Steven (Lisa) of Orlando, FL, Lisa Barkdull of Midway, Utah, Chris (Chris) of Lehi, Utah, Jason (Jennifer) of Bountiful, Utah, and Thad (Jill) of Pleasant Grove, Utah. Nineteen grandchildren and one great grandson and her siblings, Nancy Wagstaff, Virginia DeFoggi, and Harold Bennett III.
She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Harold and Dwinna and her sister Dwinna Mary and three infant grandsons.
We wish to extend our gratitude to all who provided care and support to mom and dad during this difficult period. Viewing will be on 22 September, between 7-8:30 p.m. at the Olpin Family Funeral Home, 494 S 300 E, Pleasant Grove, Utah. Funeral Services will be Saturday, 23 September at 10 a.m. preceded by a viewing at 9:00 a.m. at the Mt Mahogany Stake Center Chapel, 1548 N 900 W, Pleasant Grove, UT. Burial will follow at the Montpelier Cemetery, Bear Lake, ID. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinmortuary.com.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation To the LDS Church Humanitarian Fund.
