New Plymouth Sentinel
New Plymouth, Idaho
Thursday, August 9, 1917

FRANK HAHN FAMILY KILLED IN ACCIDENT

Train Hits Automobile Near Payette

One of the most terrible accidents that ever happened to a family in Idaho was that which befell the Hahns Monday morning at Wood's spur crossing near Payette.

An automoble containing six members of the Frank Hahn family of Council was hit by the pony train on the Oregon Short Line. The dead are F. Hahn, Mrs. Hahn, Joe Hahn, Elsie Hahn and Frank Hahn, Jr., Alice Hahn is the only survivor of the fatal ride.

They were on their way from Boise where they had been visiting relatives to their home in Cambridge. The auto was hit squarely by the locomotive and some of the victims were hurled more than 50 feet. The engineer thinks the auto engine went dead as the car was crossing and stopped on the track.

Mr. Hahn was a well known stockman of the Council valley, where he had resided for many years.
Elsie Ann Lee

Elsie Ann Lee passed away on Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at her home in Winters. Born in Fruitvale, Idaho on Sept. 29, 1912 to William and Leona Walker, she was 91 years old.

Mrs. Lee spent much of her childhood in Fruitvale before her entire family moved to Hood River, Oregon, where they farmed and ran a general store. In 1946, she and her husband moved to Paradise.

Following Mr. Lee’s death on Jan. 2, 1954, Mrs. Lee remained in Paradise until 1958, then returned to Burbank and resumed her job with the Burbank School District until her retirement in 1965. Upon retirement, she bought a new 1965 Ford Mustang and headed to Santa Rosa to be close to her son’s family.

She remained there until moving to Winters three years ago.

Her hobbies included china painting and tole painting, and she was an accomplished seamstress. She also enjoyed baking, and her family said she was famous for her “birthday pies.”

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. and Barbara Lee of Winters; grandchildren, Tanya Reynolds of Walnut Creek and Samantha Morales of Lynnwood, Washington; great-grandchildren Claudia Nicholas and Maria Morales, Ryan, James and Matthew Reynolds; step-great-grandchildren Lindsay, Allison, Rebecca and Olivia Mitchell, and Emma and Mitch Finklang.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
Adams, ID - History

I'm in the process of researching a book in which Adams County will feature quite heavily. I wondered if any users of this forum had any interesting historical anecdotes, facts or stories about the county that they would like to see featured. This needn't be an earth-shattering event - perhaps even a story about your own family - but one which will interest a wider audience or demonstarte a facet of life in Adams. Obviously, anyone providing a story will be given full credit in the book.
Many thanks.

I am researching Philip WALSTON, a widower, who lived in Council and Fruitvale from ca 1901-1918. He died in Boise on Aug 27, 1918. His 6 children also lived in this area about this same time period. Most of them married here. They were:
1. Conrad WALSTON, who prob married in Canada, but came back to Council, ID, by 1918 with his wife Marguerite and 3 children and lived in Council in 1920; 2. Bertha WALSTON who married Isaac RUSOW in 1902 and lived in Fruitvale until 1913;moved to Adel, OR; 3. Elizabeth C. (Bessie) WALSTON who married Eph DAY in 1900 and lived in Council in 1920; 4. Clare F. WALSTON who married Charles H. WARNER in 1905; 5. Guy WALSTON who married Laura Robertson RYALS (widow of William RYALS) in 1909; and 6. Earl WALSTON whose first wife was Emma May (maiden name unknown). Earl and Emma were divorced around 1918. He was a single man living in Council in 1920. In 1922 Earl WALSTON married a Bessie LUDWIG in Payette Co., ID. If any of these names sound familiar to you, please contact me. -- Helen Graves
