Aloha,

I am looking around for information on Awana Kaupono(b. ca 1886 in Laiemaloo, Oahu), sister of John Kapu I, daughter of Lewaina Kaupono, who later married Lilei. If anyone has any information on the females, Awana or Lewaina, please send me a message or email me at echohuntress@hotmail.com. I have come to a dead end with their information.

I have listed that Lewaina died in 1890 and her parents are Keone Kapu and Unknown Kaupono. Again, any information relating to these women would be most appreciated!

Thank you,
Kiki

Remains of Loved Ones at Kamoiliili Cemetery Relocated to Kawaiaha'o Church in 1960's

My Great-Grandmother and Great-Grt Grandmother's remains were moved from Kamoiliili Cemetery and relocated to Kawaiaha'o Church. Kawaiaha'o Church sent notices out in the late 1960's to 'ohana's of the pending relocation and re-interrment. Many notices went unanswered for many reasons. In my 'ohana's case, the only survivor that would have been able to respond to the notice at that time passed away several months before the notices went out. Only after researching Death Certificate info and speaking with Kawaiaha'o Church Trustees, did we discover the final resting places of our ancestors at the location of the Kamo'o'ili'ili Church Cemetery bell at Kawaiaha'o Church cemetery. We have placed images of the new memorial and listed names of those whose 'ohana's responded to Kawaiaha'o Church's notices on our 'ohana website at http://gasper-kealawaiole.net

Aloha e:

In researching my ohana's genealogy, I came upong five individuals witht he surname of KELIIWAIHOIKEONE. One of these individuals is my fourth great-grandfather (great-great-great-great-grandfather) with the first name of KAMAKEEAINA which is now our family surname.

Previously I could not find any information on him as his last name was spelled incorrectly and was listed as KELIIWEHOIKEONE; which now I have corrected.

This ohana was from the Big Island and the children were born in the Hamakua District, specifically in Kealakaha.

Individuals in the family are as follows:

Father: KELIIWAIHOIKEONE
Mother: KAUMUKUMU (or KAUMU-KUMU or Kaumukumu/Kaumu-kumu KELIIWAIHOIKEONE)
Children: (female) Honolulu KELIIWAIHOIKEONE b. 1820, d. 1868, m. (male) NAKAHILI), (female) Kalau KELIIWAIHOIKEONE b. 1819, d. unknown, no record of marriage, (male) Kamakeeaina KELIIWAIHOIKEONE b. 1825, d. unknown, m. Kailikalakala (HILIPALAHA).

If ayone has informaiton or resources where I can find information, I would greatley appreciate the assistanct.

My fourth great-grandfather is the first mentioning I can find of our currently family surname of KAMEKEEAINA. Even though I have found the origin of the name, I want to learn more about his ohana and see much further I can take the line. Currently I have nine generations accounted for.

Mahalo,

Kawika Kolomona Kamakeeaina
Freddie T. Hamlin, searching possible family in Hawaii

My name is Joy (Hamlin) Robinson, daughter of the late Freddie T. Hamlin, who died in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on July 24, 2007. A few months before my father passed away, we were having a conversation about genealogy and family. Now, my father was a stroke victim, so his speech had become somewhat unclear. Knowing the medical condition he was in, he also became very emotional at times. So you will understand the following: It was at this point in our conversation that he told me "We have more family in Hawaii". I looked at him and repeated what he had just said with question. And he nodded yes, and became very emotional. Being that he was in tears, I did not continue with that conversation. My father passed away before I could question him about Hawaii. I have since asked all of his living relatives, include my mother. My parents were divorced in the late 80's. Mom remembers my father carrying around a picture of a little girl with red curly hair. Mom does not know who she was, but seems to think it may have something to do with the time my father spent in Hawii while stationed there. My father was in the Army. He was stationed in Hawaii sometime between 1959 and 1962. I know it is a long shot, but I strongly feel I may have a half sister out there somewhere. If any of this sound somewhat familiar, please contact me.

Dear Rodney:

My name is Kawika Kolomona Kamakeeaina, great-great-great-grandson of Hattie Keamalu Nihipali (Chang).

I have been working with my cousin Liane Kaupea Monipon Rodings on the Nihipali side of a family tree I started over a month ago on another site.

To date, we have 1,347 individuals on the family tree, including several Nihipali family members, 78 to be exact.

I would love for you to join our tree and add more family members.

Please contact me at: kamakeeainaohana@yahoo.com

Once I receive your reply, I will need the following information:

Your name, your parents names, their parents names, and if possible, their parents names.

Once I have this, I can establish how you fit into the tree and then add your email address. Once that is done, you will get an automatic invite to the tree and presto, you will be on and able to add, edit, and update all you want.

There are many of us "cousins" on the tree updating it daily and it continues to grow.

I would love to have you on.

Mahalo,

Kawika

ALoha, no I have not looked at that option but I will. Thank you. This is all so new to me. I am currently requesting from the State of Hawaii registry a copy of the marriage certificate and seeking her birth certificate. They have to go to the archives since this was way back during the territorial era. I know my mother had a copy of the marriage marriage certificate since I used that to filed for Hawaiian Homes. But somehow I had misplaced that copy. Thank you again for that information

Even with his disabilities, he was always upbeat and full of information. I remember Uncle Ben living on Molokai also. Are one of these persons your parent? Or grandparent?

My tutu wahine and Uncle Ben were not close I guess due to the distance that they lived, but when together, they could talk for hours. I truly remember that.
Von Aspe, John W. Searching for information about this sea captain who died about 1910, but could be between 1906 - 1920. He was cremated and ashes shipped to widow, Elsea Jensine Von Aspe in San Pedro, CA. There was no family in Hawaii, so an obit not likely. The family thinks he died when ship sank. So, a news article may have appeared about sinking. Name of ship is unknown. Thanks for your help, Ed Nissen, edjeanne@mlode.com.

I remember Uncle Ben because he had a lot of character. Meaning he had a very quick wit. My tutu never mentioned her mother being part of the settlement, only her brother. I do remember some of my tutu's cousins whom she was very close with. I am researching the family tree for my grandchildren for their school work. My hanai-mother (who happens to be my fathers' sister) had a geneology chart made out for us for the Pe'a family. I cannot locate my copy, but i beleive one of the siblings would have a copy somewhere.

I hope to hear from anyone soon.

Aloha no
I am researching my tutu wahine's background for my grandchildren. My tutu was born in Kaimu as May Aliaualani Pe'a. I am not sure of who her parents were. I am looking for her marriage or birth certificate if there ever was one registered. I know that she had a brother named Benjamin Pe'a who resided on the island of Moloka'i in the settlement. I met him years ago when tutu took us for vacation during the summer and stayed with his daughter.
Please anyone, respond. Mahalo

Yes, these are the Pe'as that I am related to. I do have some genealogy on this family-not a lot-but I do have the name you just mentioned. My great grandpa's family was from John Ulumahipua Pe'a. I will get my genealogy paper out. My Auntie Francine lives in Kona. My cousin Faye lives in O'ahu . I have one pic. of my ggrandpa Ben Pe'a when he was being sent to Kalaupapa. We think that his grandma was also a leper but we could be mistaken.
Laura Tollefson

The name is spelled with an (a) at the end, as Kaupe'a or Kaupea. There is a possibility, that an (a) was added I don't know, there are also many Kaupe that were living in the hawaiian islands. Do you have ancestors living in Hawaii? Better yet are you from Hawaii? I do have ancestors from Germany, china, portugual, ireland, italy and many other countries. The main purpose of this search is to find out what my gggrandfathers' last name was before it was change to Nihiplai. Should you run across this name anywhere in the world we are blood related. Thank You for you inquire. Please keep in-touch.

I am looking for any information on Nehemia Kahuelaau Nihipali and Lehia Kaupe'a of Kalawao, Molokai. These are my GGGrandparents. Nehemias' b. abt 1831, d. 24 dec 1909 in Kalawao, Molokai, HI, Lehias' b. abt 1835, d. also in Kalawao, Molokai, HI. I was told by family members and others, that my GGGrandfathers' last name at one time was not Nihipali. And that the Nihipali name was a given name by the people that lived in the valley of Pelekunu. How this came about was that he was a missionary for the LDS or (Mormon)Church, while prosyliting and looking for prospects, he climbed down the cliff that was the back drop of the valley. I was told the only way to enter the valley was to come in by the ocean when the tide was up. The reason for this was to protect the residents from being attack or having unwelcome guest. In the pass there were numbers of (haole) missionaries that the LDS or (Mormon) Church sent to that valley, but no one ever succeeded. Until they sent a hawaiian along with them. And this is where my GGGrandfather happened to aquire the name Nihipali (Climbing Cliff). As to what his name was before that, is a mystery to all the ohana. No one ever made an effort to make a trace of it. My GGGrandfather served several special mission for the LDS or (Mormon) Church for about 14 years covering all the Hawaiian Island. Maybe there is a family out there that has family that he may have shared the gospel with and baptized in the the faith. During the early days the hawaiians only used one name. It was not consider first or last name, just a given name. You may email me at: rnihipali@aol.com MAHALO!!

Aloha
Rodney Keola Nihipali

My mom's biological father(REDOBLADO)and mother (TUNGAL) passed away when she was very young. She and her siblings were hanai'd (adopted) by the ORNONG 'ohana and raised on Moloka'i (1940-50's). My mom and her siblings took the name of their adopted parents - ORNONG. My mom know's very little about her REDOBLADO or TUNGAL 'ohana and would like very much to re-connect with her 'ohana for her sake, the sake of her children and grandchildren. Any kokua, information or direction anyone can provide is greatly appreciated in advance. Mahalo Nui, Keakulina

FYI - Patients were allowed to assume other names when they went to Kalaupapa. The thought being that this may alleviate some of the stygma or problems for family members not at the settlement. Should you have problems finding your relatives under the name(s) you have, I suggest trying different variations of the given surnames. I was told the State of Hawaii Dept. of Health should(?) have the true name and the assumed name (aka).

Example -My relative's given and surname was Keala Kealawaiole. We knew he was there, but we couldn't find him in any file. We discovered that when he went to the settlement he dropped part of his last name and changed his name to "Keala" and last name "Waiole". This is how its listed on his Death Certificate.

Good Luck

Albert:

Please take a look at my reply to Dr. Omer Steeno on this message board. This may be of some help. Additionally, I attached some photos to that message. One of which is a photo (Picture 139) of the burial site of Father Damien's first burial site and Bro Joseph Dutton's final resting place.

The large field you see in the background is the burial place (one of many) for hundreds of "patients". Unfortunately, with very few exceptions, the graves for patients, at least on Kalawao side, are unmarked.

Hawaii State Archives is also very helpful and can do free "look ups". Try to have as much info as you can when you call.

I had relatives at the settlement who were sent there at a very young age and lived and died there. I've been there on two ocassions. If you haven't been, you might consider visiting. We pondered the thought of re-locating our relatives, as well. However, once you visit, and experience that peaceful, beautiful and powerful place, you may find that there is no better place for your loved ones to rest.

Hope this Helps

Aloha

Doctor Steeno:

Found the following info thru the LDS website http://www.familysearch.org

Emil Van Lil

Birth: About 1856 Of, Kalaupapa, Molokai, Hawaii

Death: 02 MAY 1925

I had relatives at Kalaupapa, and have visited two times, the most recent was January of this year (05). I'm somewhat familiar with the layout. I know several of the clergy that were Na Kokua (helpers) are buried next to St. Philomena Catholic Church off Old Damien Rd. If you are not familiar, both Bro Dutton and Father Damien's [first] burial sites are located there.

You might view a copy of the manuscripts from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church - Kalaupapa, which includes baptisms, confirmations, marriages and burials in Kalaupapa and Kalawao. What you're looking for may also be in the church register - c. 1873 - 1930. You can get more info on this at the familysearch.org site.

The attached photos are of St. Philomena Church - Kalawao, an angle shot of the graves of the clergy and Bro Duttons grave. Emil Van Lil may very well be buried with the clergy near Bro Duttons grave.

Hope This Helps
