This responds to an earler(2002)email regarding Theresa Lukinia Aku Moniz. Perhaps this is too late.

She is my great-grandmother, too. We have her ID card and also the ID card of her husband, Henrique Taveres-Moniz. I would be glad to send photocopies to you.

I have heard Theresa was very religious, walking daily from their residence on Kinau Lane (no longer exists, near today's Hilo Lagoon Hotel which is now condominiums) near Wailoa Pond in Hilo up to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, which is quite a long walk. They had ducks and she read the newspaper to her husband who was illiterate. He worked on the docks and also on the Hilo Bay breakwater. They are buried in Homelani Cemetery in Hilo, on the left section as you go up Ponahawai Street. Immediately after entering the cemetery, they are on the left toward the back where they were relocated from another burial site. The gravestone says 'Moniz Family'.

Aloha,
It's been a year and I'm still finding information on my Grandma Helen's (Harue) side. I found her mom and dad to be Kiyoji & Saki Nakagawa, and Kiyoji's mom and dad to be Yasutaro & Kina - both from Japan but that's as far back as I can get. My youngest son is taking a class trip to Japan soon and I would love for him to meet a Maesaka while he's there. I know it's a long shot but would be awesome! Do you have any family tree info that I could learn from your resources? Also, at the time, I wasn't sure what a mon was but now that I know - did you ever find it?
Thanks, Ken Miller
You can reach me direct at xpman@comcast.net

Marsha,
I see you are new to posting on the Rootsweb message boards. When you post, it is helpful to fully identify who you seek by full date of birth, date of death. You have a great family tree that identifies your hard work, so post the link to the person that you seek. In this way you won't get "findings" about the wrong people or information you already have. For Joseph:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/50998991/person/13137696301

It was about 13 years ago when I spoke to Aunt Maggie about the AVILLA side which she said she thought was from Madeira but a few days ago I found that Captulina's parents Lionel AVILLA & Ermelinda CARREIRO were both from S. Miguel, Azores.

I'm just looking to see if anyone else have more info. on anything that could direct me into the right direction, like where in S. Miguel if the family was really from that island or another Azorean island, although on Lionel's draft record he did put his birth place as S. Miguel.

Kalani

Yes you are correct the direct line is Kanakaokai from Maui in Hana if I am correct? My tutu is Kanakaokai Kala'inawai from Ale'amai Hawai'i. He is a descendant of that Maui line some generations above, and the Namau'u line falls in that branch. The Waiki name falls in line by marriage to 1 of the 4 siblings, one of which was tutu Wai'au who married tutu Lono Waiki and that branch spread through Ale'amai down to Onomea. The other siblings was Kama, Kapu and Hapuku Kala'inawai. I do believe that it was an inter marriage amongst family blood because they were distant cousins as many marriages were back then.

Auntie Penny mentioned to my mom that you were looking into our genealogy. Imagine my shock when I saw someone talking about their Grandma Clara. I'm eager to know how much you've found out. I don't know what compelled me to type the names "Nobriga/Big Island" in google. Ironically, it was about the time of your first post with cousin Kenny. I'd love to chat with you. Please email me at ron33602@yahoo.com. Ill reply with my cell number... This is so exciting.

Hope to hear from you soon!
Cousin Ronnie

Aloha
I'm trying to get my genealogy info straight, and I'm having a hard time. I'm hoping someone out there can help me.

My grandma is Clara Olival.

My grandparents are Mary Nobriga and Manuel Olival (I'm not 100% if I have the correct grandpa...)

My great grandparents are (I think) Joseph Jesus Nobriga/Nobrega and Francisca De Mendonca

And as far as I know I still have both Olival and Nobriga relatives living in Honoka'a side of the Big Island.

Does this ring any bells for anyone? Do I have the names right? I would really love to touch bases with any one out there who I am related to and maybe we can trade more information.

I don't know what total information you have on him for Florida. Your tree identified Charlotte, Joey (probably Joseph Jr?) and Anna.

I checked the Orange County Recorder
http://or.occompt.com/recorder/web/
for recorded documents in his name of Joseph "R" and found deed documents and other recorded documents in the name of Charlotte S and Joseph R. They purchased land/home in 1968. This "might" have been their first residence in Florida, but they could have been living there before. One document you should attempt to obtain is his Death Certificate recorded on 4/22/1992. More recent Death Certificates sometimes identify the resting place of the person, or firm handling. Under Charlotte's name, she sold property in May 1995. There is one document under the name of Joey Evans, a 1993 document.

The Orange County Clerk of Courts:
http://myclerk.myorangeclerk.com/default.aspx
Click on Probate Case Records, you will find a 1992 probate filing. It identifies it is a "Will" filed for safe keeping.

Records show Charlotte S. Evans, born 18 Jan 1935, and Joseph R Evans Jr. were residing with Joseph (Sr.) on 1220 Abbeyville Rd, Orlando, FL in 1995, the 1996 resident was the family purchasing that property in May 1995. In 1996, she was living at 123 N Lake Ave, Tavares, (Lake County), FL.

The Lake County Clerk:
http://officialrecords.lakecountyclerk.org/AcclaimWeb/search...
Enter name as "Evans Charlotte"
There are four documents in her name. The 1997 document identifies an estate between W. Ray Rogers and Companion Charlotte S Evans. In 1999, W. R. Rogers deeded the property of 123 N. Lake Ave to another person.

It appears more likely to find Charlotte in Florida.

Hi,

Joseph Ralph Evans
Born: 5 Dec 1922
Died: 5 April 1992, Orange Co., Florida
Source: Florida Death Index 1877-1998

His obituary will probably list his survivors. If you don't know where to look for an obituary in Orange Co., FL, you can post a message on their message board.

I also found the Maur Evans and Kauai Rapozo Family Tree, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/44601661/person/6226449750 which lists Joseph's family. You can contact the family tree owner to see if he/she can provide more info.
Successful Searching!

I don't know if this will help. I have relatives from Mi & In. They are Powers Green Allenbaugh (In) and Nette Badilla Loomis (Mi). They were married 12/25/88 when Powers was 28. They had children named Allen, Alice and Molly (aka Sally). I remember when I was younger that Allen (great uncle) moved to Hawaii. He had no children. At one time I was also told that Morton and Garcia was also a family surname.

So as it turns out, Ancestry.com made a huge error in my mtDNA report by assigning me to Haplogroup H. I brought my anomaly to them and they corrected my group to B4a1a1a. Thanks to Georgia Kinney Bopp who made it clear to me that ancestry.com had to have made a mistake. If I have the Polynesian Motif, there is no way to be classed to Haplogroup H. And sure enough, Ancestry.com says they were "missing the correct base mutation", whatever that means. So if any of you have been misclassified as I was, contact them to correct it.

According to military records, John William Evans was born on February 16, 1880 in Plymouth, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA. The year of his birth varies according to various documents produced during his life, i.e. children's birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, military records, etc.
According to John's marriage certificate, his parents were William C or J Evans and Catherine Llewelyn or Llelyen. According to various census records and stories passed down to his children, his parents were of Welsh-Irish ancestry and both were born in Wales.
Supposedly, John had a least two sisters, they were named Charlotte and Catherine, names he used for his own children.
I can trace John after he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1903. I cannot find any proof of John or his family before April 1903.
I need HELP in locating birth records, census records, family members, etc.
After spending time in the military in California and the Philippines, John left the Army in Hawaii in 1912. He eventually married Philomena Silva or Silva Torres on the Island of Maui, and they had thirteen (13) children. John died in 1947.
Please HELP me find information on my grandfather.

Marjorie - that name rings a bell - she is not on any of the census lists I've seen but I kinda remember Dad talking about her - don't remember a Val - maybe those are the 2 that are missing on the census list which only shows 14 kids - I have so much more to do! Mostly when I was little we spent Christmas at Uncle Stan's house in Colma -- we would go for "Sunday Drives" down to see Uncle Manuel in San Leandro. Family "vacation" would be driving (ugh car sick) to Bakersfield to see Uncle Jim - hmm was he on the list???Egads hard to keep track! Haven't seen or heard from the Portagee side of the family since my Dad died! No one kept in touch. I did see my cousin Judy (Stan's daughter) 1 time at the time Stan died. He and Aunt Muriel had divorced (didn't know that) and he was living alone in a motel and died alone. They found him by the smell emanating from his room! How awful for Uncle Stan! He and my Dad were very close. I went to Aunt Alice's funeral and no one would even give me the time of day....Got kinda disgusted with this side of the family, but still curious about the ancestry.

So there were 16?? I only have 14 don't I. My father would talk about Marjorie too because he remembers her living with Val and working at a jewelry store in San Francisco. After their mother died she lived with Albert and Lena for awhile. She was only a teenager I think. One of my favoite pictures is of Lena and Albert. I keep it on my piano.
You can go on line for the form to get the marriage license. I sent for it from Hamakua District but they didn't have it but then I found out most of the first children were born in Honolulu. Lena did remarry and moved to Riverside. Good luck!

Things have just opened up for me after I was ready to quit. Amazing how our family used to go visit Aunt Lena in Riverside where I believe she lived out her life. I can't remember to whom she was married at the time - I was just a little girl and not to interested in those things! I'll have to look into my mother's old address book - she had some info in there that would help. My parents were in there 40's when I was born and Dad passed when I was 15 at age 56 from a stroke. He was never healthy -he talked about the kids sleeping 4-5 in one bed and one got Scarlet Fever so all got it and it damaged his heart. He remembered his mother who laid on the couch eating chocolates and being very fat - who wouldn't after 16 kids! I've found aunts and uncles in the census records I never had heard of! This is too awesome. I want to do the DNA testing now.....
It was so crazy how all this info just fell into my lap. Lena was my Dad's favorite sister in law for as long as her and Albert were married. She moved to Newman, in the valley, after they divorced which broke my Dad's heart. He was the youngest of 10 in his family and Albert was the oldest so he was a little boy when Lena was around. She use to take him to baseball games. He just loved her. Her sister lived with my uncle Valentino Nichelini for awhile. I have a friend who is a Mello from Newman. I told her there was probably a connection. I gave her all the info so she could follow up. Since it wasn't my immediate family I left it for her to do more research. I realized I have an error about where the early children were born. The parents were married in Honolulu I'm sure. I meant to send for their marriage license but have never gotten around to it. It should be easy to send for. The answer you seek may be there. I am so happy you have found all this.

OMG! My father was Ernest Mello and Lena was one of my many aunts. Many of the other 16 children were deceased when I was born in 1943. But I remember Lena, Alice, Emma, Lydia, Uncle Manuel - used to visit all of them as well as Uncle Stanley who was born here. My dad was actually born 10/11/1901. I have not been able to find out which island my grandparents came from in the Azores. Aunt Alice married Samuel La Barbera and lived in Oakland until her death. I can't find any cousins I knew still alive or their progeny and no one to interview! I've hit a brick wall.

Please message me if you would like to be part of the Kahunaaina Private Group Page on Facebook. The purpose of this page is to be a tool that we can use to disseminate and learn about our rich cultural Hawaiian history. Follow this link:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/kahunaaina/

The only requirement is that you introduce yourself and interact. This group is not for those that just want to collect information and not share. This group also will not tolerate anything to do with land acquisition, development of traditional lands, etc... The purpose is to save, learn, and perpetuate the non-material, or non-monetary, value that our ancestors have to offer. This being invaluable. Some of the topics we will discuss is the location of sacred structures, ancient burials, ancient genealogy chants-etc... When you request to be added be sure to send me an email on the group page. Be sure that you verify your ancestry and connection to Kahunaaina in this email. I can also help clarify any questions you may have in regards to this.

I am the son of Donna Marie Healani Iona. Her father, my grandfather is Alfred Lapauila Iona. His father, my great-grandfather, is Jonah Kunia Iona. Kunia's father, my great-great grandfather, is Jonah Kauahi Iona. Kauahi's father is J.W. Iona and his mother is Malie Kahunaaina. These are my great-great-great grandparents. Malie Kahunaaina is the daughter of J.W. Kahunaaina and Omama Kauwe (aka Mama Kahunaaina). I have verified and traced our genealogy from the time of documentation of vital statistics through the ancient records of genealogy chants through Papa and Wakea as well as Haloanakalaukapalili. I am currently verifying a genealogy record that may trace our bloodline back before the Polynesian migrations to Hawaii and to the Marquesas.

A little background on myself: I am 35 years of age and an Anthropologist and Hawaiian Language specialist. I translate Hawaiian Kingdom Government Documents and other Hawaiian Language material as well as interpret and convey Hawaiian cultural practice. I have obtained 10,000+ pages of court documented family records from Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation pertaining to Civil Case No. 5475 in the Circuite Court of the Third Circuit, State of Hawaii (Magoon vs Mama Kahunaaina Estate et. al., legal notice dated 1/16/1985). I have also visited and or interviewed many elders in our family, some of them having learned the Hawaiian language as their first language. A few of these precious people are still alive today and in their 80's/90's. I am in the process of identifying all the burials, sacred places, and culturally significant features of our traditional lands and history. This includes protection of sacred and traditional burials. I am also in the process of putting together biographies from Hawaiian language sources of our ancestors. I have been successful in this endeavor but could use more information. I work in Cultural Impact Assessments which is a part of the Environmental Impact Statement and the laws and regulations that govern the protection of cultural and environmental Hawaiian resources. I am not anti-development, but I am anti-cultural destruction. The field I work in makes possible culturally responsible development, if any development at all. I am in the process of documenting the cultural resources on our traditional land in order that any development be forced to conform to environmental and cultural laws enforced under the State of Hawaii. I hope to hear from you soon. Aloha!
My great grandfather Manuel Lopez Bilboa came over on a ship they called the SS Leopoli (not the real name, I think) with his family from the tiny village of Isbor del Rio, south of Granada that year. Including my grandfather, Manuel's son, Jose (Joseph) Lopez Lopez. They all stayed at Hamaulo camp #4. I am assuming your uncle is my grandfather, Joseph Lopez? He had three children: Tony, Mary and Josephine (my mother). That would make your father my great uncle and you a second cousin?

Torelisa from Norway was inquiring about Samson Andrade obit in 2007. I referred her to Emily Andrade and Elsie Andrade because I did not know which family Samson Andrade belonged to. I wrote each a regular mail because I did not know whether Emily or Elsie had email. I don't know whether anyone got in touch with them. Torelisa is related to Samson Andrade's mother and she was wanting information but that was a long time ago.
Sincerely,
Mabel

I am interested in connecting with family members that can trace their heritage back through Pedro Eustachio & Maria Anita [Vargas] Pereira.

Pedro & Maria Anita immigrated to the Hawaiian Islands from British Honduras between 1911 and 1912 with their six children: Lucita Gregoria, Florita Vargas, Joaquim Santos, Nina, Victor Manuel & Eliseo Fontes.

Pedro, born about 1865, was a native of Santa Izabel, Boa Vista, Cape Verde and passed away in Los Angeles, California in 1946. Maria Anita, born about 1874, a native of Belize, British Honduras passed away in Maui, Hawaii in 1930.

I have successfully contacted Pedro's descendants on the Big Island and on the mainland. In addition, I have connected Pedro with his older brother, Manuel Joaquim Pereira of Kauai. I am hoping to locate other siblings using the Pereira or Perry name.

Immediate family surnames include:
Pereira
Vargas
Fontes
Herrera
Cabral
Perry

If you are family member, or know someone that is, and are interested in re-connecting our tree please contact me.

~ Deanna
