It appears that saintly401 may have been able to add some significant information on R L and Peggy Lewis from Warren County Georgia. However, after I answered her questions I did not hear further.

Please let me know if you were able to find anything, no matter how unimportant it may appear. I have been on this hunt for a long time and I have collected several small bits and leads. Your information may be instrumental.

Thanks for your help and knowledge.

hcooper

I am looking for the grave site of these gentlemen.
We have direct ties to both. We think they are located
near Wrightsboro Near the old Spann post office in Johnsons
military district. That would be McDuffie county today but
in the 1700's Warren County counted them as soldiers and citizens. Any information about this line or any lead would be appreciated.

Your post in 2002 has helped me a bit, I've hit that brick wall we talk about. Do you are anyone have updated info on Hezekiah Peavy or Margaret Minor Betts. ---- I'll post any info I get as an update.

Thanks

Dan Crumpton did a wonderful job with the cemetery inventory of Warren and nearby counties for his book. If he didn't find Elisha Allen, he's probably not marked. The location of a family cemetery on the old Allen place may be your best assumption.

Dan also used DAR info for his first book. This only lists Elisha by name, but unlike most of the others mentioned, there is no additional information.

Many years ago, US Gov't markers were placed on all the RS graves in that area. Even back then, no one knew where Elisha was buried.

The Warren County Library has a small room with family histories. You might find one that has the Allens mentioned.

I've been trying to get a solid lead on this to see if I can find anything, no luck. The only thing I have found so far that I'm sure of is the 1900 census for Jim and Julie with children of Charlie, Lottie and Sam, living in Washington Co, GA. Jim's death certificate says he died in 1923 at 52 years old, making him born in 1871. Do you have any other info that you know for sure?

Sandy

The Elisha Allen I am searching for information on had to have been born somewhere between 1760 and 1775. Probably closer to the 1760 year. I am told he may have been born in Va.

I did send a message to the DAR site and someone emailed me back with a name and number but so far I have not been able to connect. I had left and message and received no call back, and had also tried a few more times to see if I could find someone home/available. Is there anyone else that would have information about where he may be buried?

The Elisha Allen you spoke of is my great, great grandfather. I am looking for my great, great, great, great grandfather whom I think is listed on the statue in front of the court house, Elisha Allen (probably Elisha Johnson Allen). This Elisha served in the revolutionary war apparently and is buried somewhere in Warren Co. Is there any way to find out where. I cannot find very many cemetery transcriptions online. I have the name of a DAR member who is suppose to have information on each person listed, but have been unable to make contact. Any help is appreciated. I will be making a quick trip there the end of this month and would like to visit the cemetery if I knew which one. Thanks.

Hi,

I'm willing to look at the online census records (which, by the way, are published and available to the public through the 1930 census) but you're going to need to be a little more specific: do you know what "R.L." stands for (i.e., what what his full first name)? Also, by "late 1800s" what do you mean? 1870? 1880? 1890? This kind of information makes searches much easier.

Tom Simmons
USGENWEB Coordinator
Warren County, Georgia

Hi,

Do the names on this 1920 Federal Census Record for Savannah, Chatham, Georgia ring any bells?

Jim S. The above family is listed as Caucasian.

Tom S.
The Peggy Lewis referred to by "deloresth" earier in this thread lives in Jewells, Warren County, Georgia. She is listed as divorced, with 6 children, all 6 of whom are living.

Here's the census record extract again:

Peggy Lewis, 45
Willie Lewis, son, 16
Daston Lewis, son, 13
Sim Lewis, son, 9

Thus, three of her children are grown and out of the house by this time.

There is a Jim lewis living in Tenille, Washington County, Georgia in 1900. His birth month and day are June, 1878. Here's his family:

Jim Lewis, 21
Julia Lewis,22
Charlie Lewis, son, 6
Lottie Lewis, daughter, 4
Sam L Lewis, son, 2

This couple have been married 6 years (married in 1894); they had 6 children, 3 of whom are living. All of this family were born in Georgia, as were their parents. Jim Lewis is listed as a "Farmer".

I presume this is the Jim and Julia Lewis you referred to earlier.

I'll have a look at Dan Crumpton's source books for Warren County and see if there are any references to Peggy Lewis, R. L. Lewis or any of these family members.

Tom Simmons
USGENWEB
Warren County, Georgia Coordinator
Hi,

Per Dan Crumpton's book "Cemeteries & Genealogy Warren County, Georgia and Immediate Vicinity", as of 1987 there's the:

"Williford Site...located approximately 150 yards west of County Line Road on lands of Kenneth Cook; formerly Old Davis Place and some people refer to this as Old Davis Cemetery. You will need a guide."

There are 3 marked and 5 unmarked graves at this site; apparently the only marked Williford is George W. who was a Corp. in Co. B, 22nd Georgia Infantry during the Civil War.

I note 16 Williford burials from 1888 through 1935 located at Johnson Church Cemetery on Gibson Highway in Warren.

There are several other Williford burials identified in the county; if you have names please provide them and I'll try to help out further.

Tom Simmons
USGENWEB Warren County, Georgia Coordinator

Crumpton's Vol I only lists Elisha as a Rev War soldier. No other info is printed. Also says that this came from DAR and other records.

Crumpton's 1987 grave inventory does not indicate Elisha. All of the RS graves that I am familiar with in that area are on private land in small family plots and not church cemeteries. Look for land deeds and find where he lived. A family plot on that land will be the most probable location.

The Probate Court should be the place to find "Inventoried & Appraisals 1823-1830". Elisha's estate is memtioned first on 6JAN1825 and a year later when it sold. The location may be there.

First mention I find of Elisha Allen's death is on 8NOV1824. Minutes of the Court of Ordinary 1817-1827 and Ordinary Returns 1803-1833.

Several Allen's attended Oak Spring Academy in 1859 according to Crumpton's records copied from the "Poor School Fund" page 50, including Wm. H., Thomas U., GS, Jr., Benjamin, Elizabeth C., Lucelia, Martha S. while Elisha was the teacher. This name confuses me since Oak GROVE Academy was located on the road that ran south from Double Wells. That is the area where I expect the Allen's to have lived. Double Wells was a stage coach station and when the railroad built a depot less than a mile away, the area became know as Barnett. I've never heard of Oak SPRING Academy.

Jury records from 1876 put Elisha in District 159. This was known as the Redlick District before it was numbered. From what I have learned, it extends from the Barnett area south toward Mayfield along the Ogeechee River.

Marriage records indicate an Elisha Allen and Mary A. Beckwith were married 30MAR1837.

Contact me when yo know you will be coming down. I may be able to meet you.
Based on the information I have collected, Peggy Lewis is the correct Person that was married to R L Lewis born in Warren County Georgia. The children are a perfect match for the age and other data I have. I have found several accounts where Peggy is referred to as a "Widow" and as "Divorced". However, I can not find a death certificate for RL Lewis or a divorce proceeding in either Warren County or Washington County. Did you find (during your search) any information on R L Lewis? If he died, when? Did he remarry? Georgia Virtual Vault had no information on him.

Any information you may have on R L will be helpful.

Thanks.

hcooper

Thanks for the information. However, I ran across this information earlier and for some reason excluded this family. I am unable to find my notes and will study this new information for more details.

Thanks for your very helpful information. Should you run across more, please do not hesitate to share it.

Again, thanks for all your help.

hcooper

Julia Lewis rings a bell. My grandmother is named Julia Lewis but she was born in Washington County Georgia Jan. 1878 and died in Washington County Georgia 21 August 1955. There are some instances where this family was referred to a mulatto and some a white. I do not know if this is a help. I have run into the brick wall.

Thank you so much for your help in this matter. I am grateful for any assistance you may offer.

h cooper

Thanks!

This is a real possibility. I am trying to develop other data to confirm this. The son would fit this discription within the age possibility. I am trying to find a death certificate for her and it will possibly list the location of her birth. I have two accounts: 1. Peggy Lofton born in Jewells, Warren County Georgia and 2. Peggy Lofton born in Goose Pond, Warren Co. Ga. I also have R.L. Lewis born in Goose Pond, Warren Co., Ga.

The information you have provided may be a significant break-throug for this family history. Thanks!!!!
Should you run across more, please let me know.
Many, Many thanks!
hcooper

Don't know what the R.L. stands for. R.L. and Peggy Lofton Lewis are the parents of my G-Grandfather Jim Lewis from Washington County, GA. I have hit a brick wall on them. Jim was b. 1871 or 1878(?), married Julia Marshall in 1894, and d. March 17, 1923 in Washington County, GA. Any help you can give is appreciated! Thanks. H.

Williford cemetery

I am researching the Willifords from this area and found out that there is a Williford cemetery close to Beall Springs in Warren Co Georgia. Can anyone give me some info about this cemetery? Is it a family cemetery for Willifords? Is it a "dead" cemetery (meaning no longer used for burials)? Thanks, I would appreciate any information. I hope to travel to the area soon to do further research.

Thank you for the info. I am looking for 3 female Williford family members. They may be buried in Glascock County. The names are Winneford E Williford, who went by Winney, born in late 1700s. Then her daughters, Winnefred E Williford, who was said to have gone by Winney Jr., born abt 1807 and her sister, Elizabeth Williford, born abt 1810. I have no dates of death for any of them. I know that they lived in both Warren and Glascock Counties at different times of their lives. Thanks for all your help!

Vicki Perry

Tom,

Were those deed entires in Warren or Glascock Co? Were the last 2 under the name of Wilaford? Where might I get copies of that information? I have really hit a "brick wall" on researching these women. I can't found out were Winney Sr came from, date of birth or death and where she is buried. I have info on her grandsons, John S Williford born in 1826, son of Winney Jr and sketchy info on Williamson Greene Williford born in 1826, son of Elizabeth. I can not find names of husbands for any of them. Any suggestions on where to go from here? Thanks!

Vicki
