I am looking for any information about my GGGrandfather, John Green, who was born in Warren County about 1817. He married Mary Jane Reynolds of Hancock County in 1839 and was killed at Vicksburg in 1863. I have information on his children, but not on any siblings or parents.

Hi,

Regarding John and Mary Green:

1850 Federal Census for Butts, Georgia: John Green, 31, Mary J. Green, 24, Antoinette Green, 3, Sarah J. Green, 1.

1860 Federal Census for Bluff Springs, Talladega, Alabama: John Green, 43, b. Georgia, Mary Green, 33, Antoinette Green, 14, Sarah Green, 10, John Green, 9, Anderson Green, 8, William Green, 6, Robert Green, 3.

It seems based on names and dates that these census reocrds are "linked"; you probably already have this information, but if not it might start you off on a search for John Green's parents. The paternal grandfather was often the first son's name.

I have a Warren County, Georgia Tax List for 1818 - will check Green surnames there and let you know what I discover.

Further on this line of inquiry:

The 1818 Warren County, Georgia tax list has David Green, 1 poll, no land, in Capt. Rogers' District. I see no other GREEN surnames in this tax list.

Food for thought: there is also a Warren County, North Carolina - the county seat has the same name, Warrenton, as the county in Georgia.

Tom, many thanks for the information you provided on John and David Green. My wife Anne posted the initial query and she has been instrumental in getting me interested in genealogy! We have been focusing on her family and on my mother's family (English origins) but have only recently started on my father's side (Green).
I had seen a reference to a David Green in some of my research but had no way to tie him to John. I will spend more time now looking at whatever I can find on-line, but have considered a trip to Warren County to see if we can find the trail. It looks like the most of the Green family picked up and left GA for AL sometime after 1850 or so, and I have living relatives there today. However, in our work so far, we have not been able to find anyone further back than John. Maybe David is the connection? In any event, thanks again for helping us. I will be sure to try to look you up if we make a trip to Warren County. Cheers, Mike Green, Columbia, MD

Hey Mike,

Actually, I live in Colorado (my Dad was transferred from Maryland, where we lived near College Park in the DC area, "out West" in 1962) and have never visited Warren, Georgia. Ironically, I have an aunt in Savannah so that's pretty close. When I visit her - haven't done so yet, but my g'ma is 99 years old in August so I expect there'll be a reason soon enough - I plan to pay a visit back East. My direct Simmons line lived in Warren on Long Creek, near Beall Springs (now a Georgia historic site).

As far as your visit to Warrenton is concerned, I know Dan Crumpton (a resident) has placed many of the court house records in his three books; Dan has graciously sold me a set of the books for a mere pittance (to aid folks with queries on the Warren GENWEB site). When I receive them, I'll definitely check for any further references to David Green. Stay tuned.

Tom,
My bad! I didn't click on your avatar to check out your location and just remembered your Warren County GenWeb Coordinator title so made a wrong assumption. Anyway, my wife and I lived in Aurora COO from 80-86, then moved back to MD for work-related reasons. We get back to CO every year to ski (forget the East!) and my brother lives in Colorado Springs.
Sounds like you have a good source in Dan Crumpton for Warren County. While I have a long way to go before exhausting everything I can try to find from here, I suspect that "going local" may be the best way to track John Green's ancestors. We certainly found that to be true during a recent trip to England to research my mother's side. Her family (Ranger) is from Wiltshire and we found a ton of records that had not been "computerized" yet and were only available in local files. Fortunately, the local genealogy clubs had transcribed some of them, but we still spent a lot of time trying to read some vicar's handwriting from the 1600's! You know you are dedicated when you spend three days trying to decipher a few pages!
I truly appreciate your help and will also post if we dig up anymore on our end, or through a visit to Warren County.
Cheers, Mike

Mike,

Nice coincidence on the Colorado connection. Not sure why you're in MD (other than work), but my mother's grandparents - the CARLISLE/SELBY/APPLEBY/RICKETTS/WATKINS/DIXON/YINGLING families were from Montgomery and Frederick counties at least as far back as about 1780; earlier some of them came from Anne Arundel. So my Maryland roots run deep....

In checking "Early Records of Georgia" as well as the "Wilkes County Papers" (both of which are in my library), I see plenty of GREEN references, most particularly in Wilkes County. As you are probably aware, the southern part of Wilkes became Warren County in late 1793-1794. Often, we have to end up looking in both places for records.

I'll provide you with the GREEN references from these volumes, as well as from Crumpton's books when I receive them.

Based on DNA matches, my SIMMONS line was from western England (Cornwall/Devon) so we have a "British" connection, as well.

Best,
