The Bennett Gordonm Shelton you reference is my great grandmother's youngest brother. I have some data on that line of Sheltons. If you're still interested you may contact me at psmith3164@yahoo.com.

Hi Bob J.,
You have made my day! My mom has been plugging away at this family since the 1970s mainly in Pike County, AL. It's been a hard one because my great grandfather, William Hardy Golden, was born after the 1860 census, his father Jim Matthew Golden died in 1862 after joining the confederate army. Then in 1870 William Hardy Golden is listed as Hardy Golding (which was very hard to make out) with an unrelated family. In the beginning all my mom had was microfilm at the library which she spent many many of her lunch hours doing so. I can hardly wait to show her the information you have given me! My job is to document any unsourced information she worked so hard in gathering. If it had not been for this community I would never have knownn about these books by Dan Crumpton.
Thank you again for your time and sharing. I would like to contact you directly if it's ok.
Kathy

Dear Saintly401,
You are a Saint! Sally Burkhalter is said to be my 3rd great grandmother who appears to be the mother of all of Henry Golden's children. I am very interested in what else you find in your book. May I email you directly?

Thank you,
Kathy

Hi!

We both seem to be helping with the Golden questions, which is good, but I'm actually wondering about your Burkhalter research.

For years and years I have been trying to find my g-g-g-grandmother Anna's (1785-1839) maiden name. Because of their nearby Warren County property locations, I have sometimes thought she may have been a Burkhalter, but have found no real support for that thought.

Anna married John Moses in 1805, becoming his second wife, had three children, then married Drury May in 1809. Drury and Anna May became my g-g-g-grandparents.

Have you ever noticed an Anna of that vintage in your Burkhalter digging?

Thanks,

Bob J.

Hi Cathy,

I did some more digging in Mr. Crumpton's Warren County publications, and found some information which may prove useful to you.

Arranged by date:

13 August 1788: 500 acres granted in Wilkes County to Henry Golden, on or near Rocky Comfort Creek (Warren County was formed later, 19 December 1793). Recorded in Plat Book D, page 72, Wilkes County.

20 July 1796: Henry Golden deceased - Reuben Jones named guardian for David, Sarah and Henry Golden.

10 February 1802: Returns filed for estate by Reuben Jones.

4 September 1809: Philip Brantley named administrator of David Golden estate.

9 September 1809: Inventory and appraisement of David Golden estate ($1,852.25).

23 November 1809: Sale proceeds of $1,020.95 reported.

5 February 1811: Sale proceeds reported by Philip Brantley - $3,034.00.

6 November 1815: David Golden deceased - Nathaniel Hutchison guardian for Gilley and Henry Golden.

6 May 1816: David Golden deceased - Nathaniel Hutchison guardian for Lettice, Maria, Sally and Lavinia Golden.

4 March 1827: Gilla (Gilley) Golden named guardian of Mariah and Viney (Lavinia), children of David Golden, deceased.

Hope this helps!

I love you BobJ! You have just taken a whole bunch of pieces of this massive jigsaw puzzle we have been working for years and like magic glued pieces together! We have assumed that Henry and Gillie Golden were brothers for years with no proof. Gillie stayed in Marion County, Georgia while Henry moved on to Pike County, AL. We were going only by dates and children in Pike County being named Gilly! You have brought tears of joy to my eyes!;) Thank you, thank you, thank you!

The Burkhalter family is in Marion County, Georgia at the same time as Gilly Golden. I do have a note that Ann Epsy Burkhalter married Gilly Golden but no marriage record. I have not found who Ann Epsy and Sally Burkhalter's parents are. But in the 1850 Marion County Census is David Burkhalter age 46 listed with wife and children. Next family is John Burkhalter age 88.

Sincerely,
Kathy
