I don't know if you are still looking for information on this person but I have found a few entries in some books that I have about him. You are correct that he was living in Troup County for both the 1850 and 1860 census. He has a wife and children,(Elizabeth and son William E.) 1850 census. 1860 census wife is listed as E., son William is listed as Edd and there are now four other children as follows(Emily 8, Charles 6, Ann 4 and Thomas 2). In Superior Court Records from 1854-1856 Reps/Ress is listed as a partner in Dukes & Culver with Lafayette Culver, hack smith, wagon making, and mechanics. They make horse shoes, buggy hubs, and repair buggies. Also in the marriage book it looks that his wife maiden name is Culver and possibly Ress/Reps went into business with his wife's family. Ress Dukes and Elizabeth Culver were married on March 12, 1848 by the Justice of the Piece Wilson Bruce. Hope that this helps you.

I wrote a lenghty reply & then it wouldn't post. The child was Chappell Ludovic Shelton, my grandfather. My mother was the youngest of 12 born in 1919. His mother, Martha Mahala Cobb, was pregnant when he was shot. Story goes it had something to do with a horse. Thieving or shot in back off the back of a horse. The two met at a dance & were married 2 days later. This is found in "Our Cobb Family A History" 1975 in the Atlanta Texas Public Library. I am Dwen & I do the Shelton geneology. Thanks for the questions. I have not been able to trace any root, marriage or lineage of Green. My grandfather obviously did not know much about him & having never met him being raised by another man, an only child.

Cindy,

Should have done this first. Went back into my documents and this is all I have related to Green Shelton.

The following information is what we have on Green Shelton.

Chapman Clement Shelton (B: 1833, GA) reportedly had a brother Green {C. v.s B.C. v.s C.B.} Shelton (B: 1832, GA - See 1870 Davis County (which latter was re-named Cass County) US Census where a Green Shelton is listed along with his wife Martha Mahala Cobb age 19. Green lists his age as 33 which makes his birth year 1837 and birth state as Georgia.

Lilla Shelton Waters, daughter of Thomas Edward Shelton who was a half brother to Chapman Clement Shelton’s son, Clement, spoke to my aunt Leslie Shelton Bushnell at her twin sisters (Dessie Shelton’s) funeral in 1986 wherein aunt Leslie wrote down information that according to Lilla Shelton Waters her father told her that Green Shelton [B: 1832] and his brother, Chapman Clement Shelton, [B:1833] along with a younger brother ~ age six (6) (name unknown) traveled from Georgia to Shreveport, LA where they left the younger brother with an unknown family. The reason for leaving the younger brother is unknown. The two then continued onto Texas. Chapman settled near Kildare, Cass County, Texas and Green Shelton lived around Bivins, TX.

Lilla Shelton Waters also stated to aunt Lelsie that her father told her that Green was shot in the back through a window. Lilla did not know the date or the circumstances surrounding the death of Green. It was stated that Green was/is buried on the W.F. Carver Estate, Cass County, TX near Atlanta, TX.
Cindy,

What information/stories do you have of Green Shelton in Cass County? From my family information he came to Texas with his brother Chapman Clement Shelton from Georgia. My aunt told me that she was told by her aunt in Linden, Tx that Green was married and his wife pregnant. He was shot in the back going out a window of a home and died. She assumed from this it was an attempted robbery. Do you have any information from his wife and/or the child that was born after about him and his past before he got to Cass County?

I have a picture of Chapman's father who it appears was also named Green.
The Chemollie Reserve is also known as the Efa Emathla reserve (spelling varies wildly - means 'Dog Warrior'). The reserve was granted to my G G Grandfather, who was a Creek (Euchee) chief. He had signed the 1821 and 1825 treaties along with William McIntosh, a v ey unpopular act.
He lost the reserve after the 1825 treaty and became William Brown. He received a land lot immediately adjacent to the Reserve. I have no information on others who may have lived there. Efa/William had 4 wives, Huphany Tomlin was my GGGrandmother.

I probably have several WILLIAMS family connections somewhere but only found one in the immediacy (I have not researched this area at all) down in Florida. There is also a BATES relative who moved from Spalding County (next to the Flint River usually referred to as Union Census District) to Pike then Upson Counties with some of his descendents still in both areas.
Just wondering if you have any of yours connected to Fayette and Spalding counties?
Sparkgapper

I am Kayla Redonia Harper. I live in Gladewater, TX. I am about an hour from Cass County.
James Rufus Shelton was my Great Great Grandfather, the family called him Papa Shelton. His wife's name was Celia Vest but the family called her Mama Celie. Maggie Mae was his Daughter and my Great Grandmother, she went by Mae. She and her sister's Maxine and Nettie lived next door to each other in Kildare. My Grandmother was Bettie Marie Washington. She went by Marie. She was the oldest of Mae's kids.
Every Labor Day we have had a Shelton reunion for as long as I can remember. This last reunion, Bryan was the last of James and Celia's kids living.
Most of the family is buried at Kildare or in Linden at the Center Hill Cemetary ( where your grandfather is). The Burkhalters are buried near Atlanta in the Old Liberty Cemetary. I have been trying to put pictures up on findagrave if they are missing.
Sallie is a nickname for Sarah. The person who wrote the cass county census apparently wrote what he thought names were lol. Miranda is a female. Her name is Mirandie on her gravestone. The other kids are Thomas Edward, John Wesley, and William Lee.
I have been trying to scan documents and pictures I have, but it is going to take a while for me to put them on ancestry. I will try to put some pictures up so you can see what people look like. I don't believe I have any of Chapman and Sarah. I would love to see them and Chapman's father. My email address is kayla.redonia@gmail.com. I have a couple other cousins doing research also. I look forward to hearing from you. My tree is the Hagood/Harper tree.

Hello cousin,

My name is Wayne L. Shelton from Spanish Fork, Utah. May I ask what your name is and where you currently live.

My Grandfather was Clement Chapman a brother (four years older) to Joseph(?James)Rufus. And my father was Elmer L. Shelton.

I have Chapman’s wife last name spelled as Buckhalter instead of what you listed as Burkhalter.

Also the following was obtained from the 1880 U.S. census records:

The 1880 U.S. census lists the following children to Chapman Clement and Sarah Buckhalter
(? if spelling correct, i.e.- Sallie instead of Sarah - IGI record lists “Sallie Buckhalter” as mother to Clement. ?) in order of age:

Thos. E. (Thomas Edward) 13

Maranda 10 ? It lists her as a son, but it shows an “f” in the box

Clement C. (Chapman) 5 B: 02-14-1875; D: 09-07-1932 (57)

William L. (Lee) 3 B: 03-30-1977; D: 1951

Jos. R. (Joseph Rufus) 1

What related histories and pictures do you have about your Great Grandmother (what is her name) and about her father Joseph (?James)Rufus, as well as Chapman or any of the other four children?

I have Chapman being born in Georgia. I have a picture of Chapman and Sarah in their older years. I also have a picture of Chapman’s father.

In 2011 I believe I discovered Chapman’s fathers name which is Green Shelton. Green had a brother named Elijah. Green married Reny Hardaway. They had Chapman (1835), Green (1837) and a sister Lucy A.(1840). They had other children besides these three but do not know their names or how many.

Out family “chit-chat hand-me down history stated that Chapman and a brother named Green left Georgia and ended up in Texas. Chapman ended up in Linden, Cass County, Texas.

My aunt told me a story she herd from a relative that Green had married and his wife was several months pregnant. She was told that Green was shot in the back while attempting to go out a window. I deducted this to mean that he was caught inside a home and was escaping when he was shot and died.

Would like to discuss what genealogy and family history you may have related to our Shelton line.

Wayne

I do not think the Chambers County Woodson Allen is ours, based on the information in his (the Chambers County Woodson) will and other things I've read on-line. I've had a difficult time researching this, too, and found some information that has been used in DAR applications many years ago could be wrong. A cousin has told me that many years ago DAR did not require the documentation that they do now. I would really like to get our Woodson documented.I have also been working on where Woodson was when he passed away before 1840. I wonder why Mary Greene Allen came to Upson County, Georgia, as a widow with lots of children. I am researching to see if she had family in Upson County. There were lots of Greenes in Upson County.

Yes, my grandmother's full name was Rosie Queen Elizabeth Allen. I was born in Troy, Alabama but I moved to Chambers County several years ago. What I am confused the most about is which Woodson is ours? Are we kin to the Allen's in Chambers County? You know most of the info on rootsweb and ancestry has Woodson with three wives and gives him credit for a ton of children.

The name "Young" recurs in the Allen family many times.Young Asbury Allen had a daughter named Queen Elizabeth Allen who married a Chancellor. Also, there the name "Asbury" recurs as well as other kinds of "bury" like Rasbury. Of course, John is throughout the line, too.

Your John Allen was my husband's great-great-grandfather. John Rasbury "Raz" Allen was my husband's great-grandfather. I have a good bit of information and have received lots of help from "Missy" on this message board. John Allen of Upson County, GA, did marry Nancy Chancellor (Chancley on some some records)from Monroe County, GA, and did move to Pike County, Alabama, as did his mother, Mary Greene Allen, and some of his siblings. John Allen is buried outside Troy, Alabama, as is Raz. The two Woodson Allens make it difficult to distinguish between the lines. However, Jim Allen sent me a copy of the will of one Woodson Allen, so we ruled him out as being Mary Greene Allen's husband. If you have some specific questions, I will be glad to share any information I have.

Mary Greene Allen and some of her children, plus 3 orphaned grandchildren, did move to Pike County, Alabama. Some of the family members are buried in Spring Hill Cemetery outside Troy, Alabama. However, I have read that Mary is presumed to have been buried somewhere near her property near Pike Lake. My husband is descended from John W. and Nancy Chancellor Allen's line (son of Mary) and his son, John Rasbury "Raz" Allen. Some of the family members returned to Upson County, GA, and did not remain in Alabama. Young Asbury Allen, his wife, and two sons are buried at Arnold Cemetery near Yatesville, GA.

I have some information on Mary Greene Allen, wife of Woodson Allen. You are so right about the two Woodsons being confusing. I have not located anything definitive on their marriage. However, Mary Green Allen's son-in-law, Aaron Fletcher, was the executor of Woodson Allen's estate according to records from Monroe County, Georgia. Mary shows up (without Woodson)on the 1840 and 1850 Upson County, Georgia, census before she moves to Pike County, Alabama. Several of her children (and also 3 orphaned grandchildren) went with her to Alabama, but Young Asbury returned and lived outside Yatesville. He and his wife are buried in Arnold Cemetery in Yatesville (just outside Thomaston). Let me know if I can be of further help.

There is a Lynn Cunningham that has put together books with articles from the Newspaper and she may have ran across the obituary for Martha Lou in her search of the newspaper. Flint district is close to Molena.
Rosa Dawson

Re: Williams Family

I researched the Elkanah Williams family, and thought I had found some long lost relatives. However, I contacted a researcher who had done extensive resarch on the family & had lots of cemetery records. He said I had the wrong Williams family & that their Martha "Mattie" Williams was married to James Dozier, her only husband. Also, the birth & death dates didn't match, so I was then back to square one. The ECG Williams family were neighbors of the Crowells which also seemed to collaborate the connection. However, in the 1880 census another Mattie Williams was living 2 families down from the Crowells with Sarah Hardy & her son. This Mattie's age seemed to match the previous birtdate I had from the Molena Cemetery records & was also more in line with Sidney's age, therefore I am now of the opinion that she is probably the right Mattie. I just can't verify who her family was as there were lots of Williams families in the area. Thanks for replying and if you find anything more I would appreciate hearing from you. Are you related to this family??

I am also descendant of Young Asbury Allen and need specific information on his father Woodson's wife and their marriage for the DAR. I have conflicting information and our Woodson is regularly being mixed up with the Woodson Allen who married Annis Palmer, but they're different men...so frustrating!
Thanks,
Lawren

Hello I just put the name of Martha Lou Williams into the google site and there are a number of Family Genealogies and they read,Martha Lou Williams is the daughter of Elkanah
and Mary Williams of Upson County and list the 1870 census as a source, The husband is listed as Sidney Mitchell Crowell, he died 1919, I looked at the Molena Cemetery listing and found Martha Lou but no other Crowell, but the transcriber said it was a work in ptogress Martha was listed as dying Feb 8, 1912.
Email me if you are unable to find the genealogies I mentioned
Rosa

I am looking for info on the parents of Martha Lou Williams, b. May 22, 1858 or 1859. She married Sidney Mitchell Crowell in 1890, and is buried in Molena Church Cemetery in Molena, Pike County, GA. In 1880 she was living in Flint, GA. with Sarah Hardy & her son, Thomas, and working as a domestic. I have been unable to find her in any previous census records, and am anxious to find out who her parents were. I have a photo of her taken shortly before her death.
