Hi Everybody! I found what I was looking for and wanted to share it with you. On Nov. 12, 1870, William Taylor gave a deposition in support of Pryor May for the Southern Claims Commission. (claim # 10191, Pryor May) In this deposition he stated that he ( William) was 71 years old, that he now resides in Union County, GA, but before that he resided in Cherokee County NC and Caldwell County NC. He also stated that Pryor May was his brother in law and that Pryor was living and farming on land that William had bought in Cherokee County in 1862 and that Pryor was visiting his house in Caldwell County in 1864 when Pryor was arrested and forced to serve in the confederate army.

1850 Census, Caldwell, NC
William Taylor age 44 farmer
Barbara age 73 (William's mother)
Hannah age 37
Mary May age 18 ( if true, she was b. in 1831 ish)

(Pryor May lived 6 houses away)

1851 Caldwell County NC marriages Mary Jane May to Smith Kerby (or Kerley)

1860 census Caldwell , NC
Prior May 's household included his wife and children and also
Mary May age 22 (she was 32)
Louisa age 11
Martha age 8
Victoria age 7
William age 2
Union County GA marriages William Taylor marries Mary J. Carley 1868 Apr15
Union Co. GA Marriages Luisa May to Posey Southerland 1872 Jan 17

1880 census Union County GA, Upper Young Cane
William Taylor farmer age 74 b. GA Upper Young Cane
Andrew J Rector
Victoria Rector b. 5 Feb 1862 NC md. 1881( Victoria's death record states that her parents were Mary May and Wm. GA

William Taylor age 41 b. Mar. 1859 NC parents b. NC

My notes: In all censuses and Documents that I found for William and MaryTaylor, they signed with X and stated on the censuses that they couldn't read . This would account for the discrepancies in their ages on the census and other docs. They simply didn't know exactly how old they were.
Does anyone have copies of the books by Kathleen George Graves and Winnie Palmer McDonald? I have a copy of Our Union County Heritage A Historical and Biographical Album of Union County - People, Places, and Events, copyright 1978 that I purchased nearly 20 years ago from the funeral home in Maynardville. There are at least two other books by the same ladies, but unfortunately, they were not available for sale while I was there. I am interested in getting a copy of the Yadon family history that was included in one of them. Can anyone help? My husband is descended from Joseph Preston Yadon from County Down Ireland.

I believe he was the son of Benjamin Franklin Wheeler out of North Carolina and was with the Families that included Theron Wheeler out of Burk county NC that settled on Daniel Browns land that he bought from the Cherokees their at Bear Mountain. We've tested our DNA are shown to be purely European.

William and Susannah are Gx-grandparents of mine. I'm an heir of their daughter Martha "Patsy/Pattie" Cook, who married Robert Self.

I've seen the http://www.findagrave.com/ listings for William and Susannah at Harmony Grove Cemetery in Union County, Georgia.

I'm confused.

There is a memorial for William Cook, Sr. #10403566 born 1750 and a separate memorial William M. Cook #10403691 born 1785.

With the William Cook, Sr. memorial #10403566 there is a stone marker that reads:

"Born about 1750 NC. Wife Suzannah. Decendants are: William M. Cook 1785 - 1875, Jonathon Cook 1815 - 1861, Jackson Kimsey Cook 1847 - 1910, Sarah Cook Coker 1870 - 1940, Irene Coker Brown 1909, Wanda Brown Gibson 1940, C. Edward Gibson Jr. 1959, Matthew E. Gibson 1984."

Where does William Cook, Sr. 1750 come in?

Didn't William M. Cook 1785 Married Susannah Hill 1787 in 1802?

I understand that someone is trying to document their family's lineage. Please explain the William Cook, Sr. 1750.

Was there another Susannah?

Also, on Susan/Susannah/Suzanna's memorial #10403593 it makes the comment:

"Member of the Cherokee Family Union Co." What does this mean?

Thank you,

Cynthia

Becky -
In going back over my records I found that I have mistaken your William M Grantham for the William G- mentioned in my previous post. Yours is probably related to mine but at a later date. I have found yours in marriage records as William M. Grantham married to Rutha? Brackett in Union Co. GA on July 16, 1876. This can be found on the website:
http://graham.main.nc.us/~rjohnson/genealogy/grantham_mar.ht...
Go to Georgia, then to Union County
Sorry for the confusion.
Robert Allen
granthamr@aol.com
What I have on the William Grantham is very little, as he is a collateral line. Two of his son's married my Turner cousins and his oldest daughter married a Towery who connects to my Turner line also.
I have his parents as Albert and Mary 'Polly' Jones Grantham, married in Union Co in 1847. William died in 1933 and is buried at Hemptown Cemetery in Fannin Co., GA.
I will be happy to exchange info with you.
Both John and William were born in Dobbs County NC, moved to Asheville, NC, then separated - John to KY and William to GA. Their parents were William Grantham and Rhoda ? . I have other info on their ancestors and the descendents of the William G- in which you are interested. Also there is a Grantham reseacher in Texas that descends from that branch of the family. Let me know if I can help.

He was a brother to my gr-grandmother/Ada Arizona Taylor, who was Wm Harvey Taylor's daughter. Ada was my daddy's grandmother. My mother's grandmother was Emma Taylor, wife of Willis Washington 'Bud' Thomas. Ada married Jackson Bynum Dills.
Sarah Brackett, Morgan's daughter I found her living in Union co 1880 census married to James Ownbey did she married a Kelly because her daughter from that marriage was living with them. Does anyone know anything about who she really married?

Rev. Daniel Hayes who lived in Union County 1850

Daniel Hayes was born in North Carolina in 1829 and died in Emanuel County, GA in 1899. His first wife's name was Rachel with whom he had six children:

Mary M. Hayes b. 1848, NC d. 1925 in Emanuel County, GA m. Rowan Johnson
Martha Jane Hayes b. 1850, GA
George W. b 1851, GA
Joseph A. b. 1852, GA
Ranson O. b. 1854, GA
Margaret Adeline Hayes b. 1855, GA

He lived in Union County, GA in 1850, Fannin County, GA in 1860 and Glascock County, GA in 1870.

After Rachel's decease, he married the widow of William Wilcher, Nancy Wilcher in 1866 in Glascock County, GA.

I have no record of him past 1874 where he is mentioned in Nancy's Disallowed Southern Claims Commission packet as her husband. Nancy died in 1880 in Glascock County but the Mortality Schedule lists her as a widow.

Daniel Hayes' headstone in the Johnson Family Cemetery in Emanuel County, GA has his birth April 14, 1829 - March 31, 1899. On it, he is given the title "Rev.(D. Hayes)" and there is a Freemasonic symbol engraved thereon.

I am searching for evidence as to what denomination he was a minister for and who his and his first wife's parents were and why there is a gap between 1874 and 1899 regarding records.

Thanks,

J.
yes......trying to find out of my line of Shuler descended from one of Gen Phillip Schulyers chuldren as was told me by one of my fathers sisters 40 years ago however unable to get info past my great-grandfather Christian Shuler who was born in 1820 in Cumberland County, PA and raised by his grandfather also named Christian to his death in 1828. Young Christian went with his mother and stepfather to Ohio and married a couple times producing my grandfather Jacob before they all went west to Kansas around 1880s. Great question is where was young Christians father; I presume dead therefore, the supposition is that if my Aunt Alice Woodbridge knew what she was talking about, one of the Schulyer siblings were loyalists and changed the spelling of their family name from the colonialists spelling as was customary during and after the Revolution. Gen Phillip Schulyer was a co general to George Washington. Phillip was a great grandson to the original family who came from Holland in the 1640s and were the stewards of the Hudson river corridor trading with the indians and settling disputes in an orderly manner. Alexander Hamilton was married to a daughter of Phillip Schulyer. I did find the "Shuler" spelling of Schuyler family in the Saratoga Battlefield records very near the Schulyer home outside Albany, NY so it might be fiction or again it might be fact, I just don't know.

Not sure how Union county GA Shulers might be connected but found this site several years ago and thought worth a try. Seems like great grandfather Christian's children might have gone south to GA who would be the line or maybe from PA......

If you live in western North Carolina (Cherokee, Clay, Graham), Southeast Tennessee (Polk), or Northern Georgia (Towns, Union), and would like to improve your genealogy skills, you might want to consider taking one of our genealogy courses at Tri-County Community College in Peachtree, NC this Fall.

I will be offering one beginner class, an advanced class (you must have taken my beginner class to take an advanced course), or my new genealogy technology course on campus this Fall. The following are the classes that I will be teaching this Fall at Tri Community College in Peachtree, NC.

Researching an American Genealogy, Part 2 - Advanced Genealogy Course
For those who want to learn how to build pedigrees and reconstruct family groups, tying them from one generation to the next, this course is a must. This course also has value to other researchers. Historians, demographers, and sociologists studying people in the past will find that this course will provide important guidance in assessing which records will provide the facts needed. Part 2 of this popular advanced genealogy course will cover in-depth records and their uses. This course will look at vital records; census; probate and basic legal terminology; land records; court, church; and military records; and many more.

Prerequisite: Beginning/Intermediate Genealogy Course
6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Tuesday Nights (13 weeks)
August 21 - November 13, 2012

Planting Your Family Tree Online - Genealogy Technology Course
When you decided to work on your family history, you undoubtedly learned about places you should go (libraries, archives, courthouses, cemeteries, etc.) and tools you should use (libraries, catalogs, microfilm, etc.). As genealogists, we should seek out new resources and adopt new tools that may prove valuable in our research. This course will accomplish that by introducing you to new technology "places" and tools that you can use in your genealogy research. Social networking; blogs; wikis; photo and video sharing; genealogy software: free, paid and on the web; and online trees are just a few of the topics to be covered in this new technology related course.

Prerequisite: This course is open to all, but a basic understanding of genealogy principles and computer technology is strongly recommended.
6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Wednesday (10 weeks)
September 5 - November 7, 2012

Who Do You Think You Are? - Beginning/Intermediate Genealogy Course
NBC's TV program Who Do You Think You Are? sparked a lot of interest in genealogy research. If you would like to learn how to do your own family research then this course is for you. Some of the course material includes the usage of a variety of record sources in the pursuit of ancestor hunting. Sources such as vital records, census, church records, court, military, land property, and tax records will be discussed in detail. Genealogy basics as well as advanced topics such as DNA testing will be included as part of this course. This course is a requirement to take any of the advanced genealogy courses offered at TCCC.

6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Thursday (14 weeks)
August 16 - November 15, 2012

You can sign up for any of these genealogy courses by contacting Lisa Long, the director of community outreach at TCCC via phone 828-837-6810. Your instructor this Fall will be syndicated genealogy columnists Larry Van Horn. You can check out his bio on his genealogy blog at http://family-genealogy.blogspot.com/2012/05/fall-2012-genea....
I would be interested in ANY info on their family (Mahalia Jones and J L Wilson) as I have nothing on this line. I am descended from Susannah Reynolds Jones' sister, Mary Emaline.
Any information will be helpful. Is there anything I can help you with?

I have some information on Eliza Reynolds and her Cox children, daughters Susan and Mary and son William but have not been able to find the Gipson/Gibson although it's been awhile since I looked. John Cox was brother to my husbands GG Grandfather Giles Cox.

I am working on a family tree for a friend, who is a descendant of Mahalia Jones and JL Wilson. I have only recently started focusing on this section of her tree, so my data and sourcing aren't quite what I'd like them to be yet, but I'd be happy to share information once I've put a little more work into it. Looking forward to hearing from you.
