Re: Bishop's in Terrell and SW Georgia

Not sure if this relates to your Bishop families, but I have found a couple Bishop men who have interacted with my Henry family. In the 1850 census of Stewart, GA I have an Alphaeus Bishop living with the family of George W. Henry. Then on 11 AUG 1860, George's daughter Mary Ann marries a James Bishop. James and Mary Ann are living next door to George Henry in the 1870 census of Terrell County, GA. Still working on the history of those relationships. If you might have some clues, I would appreciate any info you can pass along. Many thanks and good luck to you.

I am seeking information about Dozier Cobb Sr. who was born in the year 1899 and passed away 1953. He married Hazel Patterson and had two sons, Dozier Jr., and Ariel. Ariel passed away in childhood. Dozier Jr,. was my father. My father joined the USAF in the 50's and met my mother in Ohio where they remained and raised thier family. I never met the "Cobb" side of the family and I have a definite interest in meeting cousins and descendents of this family. Other family names are Wanner. Pollie, Kate and Parris Wanner are noted as being possible relatives, Lela Cobb as well. This family is mulatto/creole, african american and native american. Any information is greatly appreciated!
Wesley McGill and Dollie were my great-great grandparents. Their daughter Lula was my great-grandmother, through their daughter Dollie Pauline West (daughter of Lula and Joseph Benjamin West, one of their 13 children). Dollie Pauline married James Green Cato. They had six children. James Green, Stephen Earl, Walter George, Louise, Mary Frank and Ruth Elda. Their daughter Louise (originally named Lula Eliza) Pope is my mother. She was born in 1920. She has 3 children, Me (Lynda Stone), Karla Whitfield, and Rhonda Eldridge. I would be interested to know how Wesley McGill's people came to be in Terrell Co. and where they came from originally if you have searched farther back than Wesley.

I've been reseaching my family & have not been able to go past James W. Scott in the Scott family. I don't have much info, but I do know he was born in 1819 and died in 1900. The only censuses I have begin in 1860, which say he lived in Webster County, GA. (I've also found records that say he may have owned slaves here.) The 1870 & 1880 say Terrel County, GA.

He married Martha Jane Shinholser. I have 9 children listed, but I don't think all of them are accurate. I know for a fact his son was Benjamin Franklin Scott. The other (possible) children are Thomas J., Alonzo Sumter, James W., Luther, Wesley S., Mary Leila, Nettie Janetta Cora, & Dora.

If anyone has any info on a member of this family, especially James W. Scott, you're help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

The earliest record we have on him is that he and his first wife Mary Emerson were married in 1836 in Stewart Co., GA. He and his 2nd wife Ellen York were married in Randolph, Co. in 1852. There is also a mention of him as an "Indian fighter" in 1836 in the book Historic Sites of Terrell County.

Do you know if there might be any connection to the Michael Rhinehart Vinson family who also lived in Terrell County? He and his first wife, Mary Emerson, were married in 1836 in Stewart County, and he and his 2nd wife, Ellen York, were married in Randolph County. He and Mary had 3 boys--John Washington, Elisha Henry (a.k.a. Henry Elisha), and Robert Burton. He and Ellen had 5 boys and one girl--George Singleton, William Pennington, Alexander Lamar, Joseph Bonapart, Jefferson Davis and Belle B. Vinson The earliest records we've found on Michael date back to 1836. We have no information on his parents and only that he possibly had a sister named Lydia or Lidia.

In the 1860 Census for Terrell County, we find John B. Johnston, age 24, my GGgrandfather (I think). He is listed with the family of Lydia Johnston, family #317, on page 42 of the census. His profession is shown as "studying medicine".

My question is this: In 1860 in Terrell County, GA, if someone was studying medicine, where would they be doing it? If they were studying with a doctor, who would it be? If they were going to a medical school somewhere, where would it be?

Any help would be appreciated.

Addition to last msg. I was talking about the village of Herod below Dawson, GA in Terrell County. Near there had been a Creek Indian village called Herod Town by the whites. The Indian name may have been Tutalosi, meaning 'Fowl Town'.

Doing background research on the area around Herod, 5 miles below Dawson. I have the names of most of the 1827 Land Lottery winners, but not sure who the early settlers were. Also need info on the Indian village there.

I am almost certain that the Terrell County Library has these books. I think that I have seen them there. I KNOW that I have seen the set in the downtown Dougherty County Library in Albany.

Jane
