It's a long shot, but look at Barbour Co., Alabama. My Miller ancestors migrated from Stewart Co., GA to Barbour Co.

I'm looking for Levi Miller b.1820, son of John Miller. Levi was born in Stewart Co., and married Elizabeth Pope there in 1842. By 1853 they were in Barbour Co., AL.

Good hunting!

Peter B. Alston

Searching for the ancestry of Peter B. Alston. Peter was born, per 1850 Federal Census in 1796 in SC. He moved to Halifax, NC, more than likely when he married Martha King - marriage bond dated July 14, 1819. Three sons were born in Halifax, Co.

Peter B. Alston, his wife, Martha King Alston, his sons, George W. Alston, another unknown son, and James Alston, all left Halifax, NC in about 1827 moving to Milledgeville, Baldwin Co. GA (per 1830 Federal Census - P. B. Alston). They lived there for about ten years, where daughters, Dalace, Sarah Emily and Missouri were born. In the late 1840's the family moved to Lumpkin, Stewart Co. GA (District 24, per 1840 Federal Census), living there for about 5-10 years. Their last son, Cicero Franklin Alston was born there. Before 1850 they are in Chambers Co. AL.

In the Union Recorder newspaper, Milledgeville, Baldwin Co., GA, Peter B. Alston's name was mentioned three times in the "List of Letters". This list mentioned any letter by name as they were addressed, remaining in the Post Office there for any particular individual.

For June 1833 there was a letter for "Peter B. Alston". For June 1836 there was a letter for "Peter Alston"; and October 1836, for "Peter Allston". Notice the two "L" spelling, as there were no Alston's in Baldwin Co. with this spelling, and Peter B. Alston was the only "Peter Alston" in the county with that name. This letter with the two "L" spelling, I conclude was addressed to my Peter B.

I am curious about the "Bacot" line of Allstons, and my Peter B. Alston's possible connection. In doing more research I have found in the "Prince Fredericks Parish of Winyaw", in SC, no mention of a Joseph Belin Allston, as a son of Peter Allston, Jr. and Mary Bacot. There are four children mentioned - Peter Allston, (b. 1770); Samuel Allston, (b. 1772); Sarah Jane Allston, (b. 1779); John Hayes Allston, (b. 1786).

Groves in his book "Allstons/Alstons,... etc." Has Joseph Allston, marrying a ? Belin, with sons, Samuel, (b. 1790)and Peter, (b. 1791). I believe Groves was incorrect here, as there is no record that I can find of ANY Joseph Allston, son of Peter, Jr. and Mary. In my opinion, the Samuel and Peter mentioned by Groves as sons of a Joseph Allston, is actually the two oldest sons of Peter, Jr. and Mary.

There is record of the decendants of the youngest child, John Hayes Allston, but so far I have not been able to find anything on Peter or Samuel, the two oldest sons.

Any information of the decendants of these two sons would be greatly appreciated. Quite possibly my Peter B. is somehow connected here, and is another Peter Bacot Allston, who changed the spelling when he moved to Halifax, NC back to the one "L" spelling, as this was prevalent there.

And also there are with Peter B. Alston's family very similar naming patterns with those in the "Bacot" Allston lineage. Please help if you can.

My great-greatgrandmother, Mary (unknown maiden name)born c. 1835, married Sam Parker and I found them in Florence, Stewart County, Georgia on the 1870. Mary and Sam had two children (Ann Eliza and Henry), but prior to that Mary had a child (Ambrose Brown) with Crawford Brown. My great-grandmother, Eliza(or Ann Eliza), married Jenkins Lee and later moved to Dawson, Terrell County, Georgia. I am hoping that someone can help me with locating the ancestors of Mary (her mother's name was Harriett) and Sam. Mary was of Native American and possibly African American descent. Sam was born in Alabama c. 1832 and is of mixed heritage--it was said that he had the appearance of a caucasian. I would also like to know where and when Sam Parker died. I would like any information anyone might have about their parents or possible siblings or ancestors. Jenkins father was named Arthur, I would like to know his mother's name.

His father would have been born in the 1830s or early 1840s and was John Dunaway.
James Monroe Dunaway had a John b. 1831. Timothy C. Dunaway had a John b. 1837. James W. Wilson had a John b. abt. 1837 living with him in the 1850 census. Would appreciate any additional information anyone might have.
Thanks.
David,
I don't know if I ever replied to your message of December 6, 2008 or not. I find no trace of a reply. So, I will do so now and see if it will take us anywhere.

We are of the same mind on much of what you write. The biggest difference is at the point of marriage.

We, a cousin of mine and I, that Levinia was married to a Lewis originally. We believe Lewis died sometime in the 1830's. We also think the Viney Lewis in the 1840 census and Levenia "William" in the 1850 census is/are the same person. And we believe the four boys are the same, but are now Williams. Viney has married Williams and the boys have taken the Williams name--or that was assumed by the census taker. The Jacob in the 1850 census matches up with the age of my great-great-grandfather, who was born 25 December 1831 in Stewart County, GA. Jacob was "Jacob Lewis" in the 1860 census in Randolph County. AL. and in Civil War records.

I am recalling much of this from memoery. I have been researching in Germany hard the last year and one-half. So haven't look at Jacob much.

I did find 13 new cousins there. Descendent of great-uncle who staye in Germany.

Let's keeping talking about Levinia Lewis/Williams or Williams/Lewis.

Sincerely,
Dan Louis, the spelling was changed in Texas about 1870.

I appreciate your message reguarding my search for information about Jacob Lewis & his wife, Sarah Sheppard.

Jacob Lewis is my great-great-grandfather. He was born 25 December 1831 and married Sarah Sheppard. I don't have a date for the marriage.

Jacob moved his family to Texas in 1866.

So, I think we are looking at two different individuals.

If you have additional questions I will try to answer them.

Dan Louis

Hope by now that you have been lucky with finding the needed information. I also am the grandaughter of Lewis Sheppard I don't know much about him but I can and will share with you. I would like to know what you have located and ask if you have any pictures. I never met my g-father he died in 1950 in a flood accident in West Virginia I have been told by others. I don't know when he was born around 1892 I believe. I believe he was married to Bessie Ratliff from Pike Co. Ky. Does any of this help, maybe we can help each other if you are still working on the project. I would love to find family!!!! Please get back in touch with me.

My relative is also Jeremiah Randolph and Sarah Dye through their daughter, Elizabeth "Betty or Betsy" Randolph b 05 Oct 1805 in SC and died 06 Jul 1886 in Clayton Co., GA. She was married to Henry Monroe Sanders abt 1821 in Henry Co., GA and they lived there until Henry became Clayton. I know that according to the Census in 1840 that there is a lot more children and I was trying to see if I could find out their names. Have you had any luck at getting any other info on Jeremiah? I have James, Nancy and Elizabeth as his children. Any help you can give me will be appreciated.

Currently, I am working to find a male descendant of my Jones family to get a DNA test done. If there is any way any of you could get DNA tests done by a male of the Jones name, maybe we can all see if we are kin at some point.
Does anyone have any info on the life, descendants ect of General Walter Stewart?

Many sources say he was born in Derry(then Londonderry) Ireland in 1756.. descended from Scottish Stewart(Stuart) settlers of Ulster and related to the also Scots-Irish Conyngham & Nesbitt families.
He came to Philadelphia around 1772 and worked in the merchant house of his kinsman,Conynghams. When the Rev War broke out he was an early, ardent patriot, serving with distinction and being wounded @ the Battle of Monmouth. Numerous contemporary sources have called him "The Handsomest man in the Continental Army" and he was also known as "The Irish Beauty" and "The Boy Colonel" for his good looks and his early age of command (age 21)

He married Deborah McClenachan @ Christ Church, Philly, on April 14th 1781 and had 8 children
1)William,1781-1808
2)Robert,1784-1806
3)Ann, 1786, who married Phillip Church of NY
4)Walter,1787-1807
5)Henry,1788-1823
6)Mary Ann,1791-1844
7)Caroline, died @ 7 months of age
8)Washingon,1796-1826

General Stewart died apparantly of some sort of fever on June 14th, 1796 at the very early age of 40.

I've found only one source, the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, saying he was interred @ St Paul's Burial ground in Philly(which I am assuming is Old St Paul's Church Cemetery). Otherwise not much is known of Gen Stewart or his descendents.

If anyone has any info,I'd love to hear from you

Happy Holidays and a good New Year to all

Sincerely
Maggie Pulgar-Thompson
I have found that Viney Lewis/Williams uses the family name differently at different times.

In 1840 Randolph Co., AL there is a Viney Lewis recorded with four sons.

In 1850 Randolph Co. AL there is a Levenia Williams listed with four Williams sons listed:
James age 26 bn GA
Benjamin age 22 bn GA
Jacob age 19 bn GA
Joseph age 15 bn GA

I haven't located her in 1860 but in 1870 she is recorded as Levinia Tuis(Luis) in the household on grandson James Williams next door her son Benjamin Williams and family. (Listed next to Levina Luis is a mysterious name of Jordan Williams, age 66, female, bn SC.)

The sons consistently use the Williams family name, therefore I assume that is the name of their father.

The Civil War records list a Jacob L. Williams as serving in the 13th Regular AL Infantry whose troops came from Randolph Co. AL and nearby counties.

I seem to think that Viney (Levina) was initially married to (unk) Williams and had their four sons somewhere in GA. The father of the Williams sons appears to have died between 1835 and 1840, either in GA or AL. Viney (Levina) either married a man named (Unk.) Lewis who died before the 1840 census or she may have reverted to her maiden name of Luis/Lewis.

I'd like to know your thoughts on the above scenario.

David Brady
Oklahoma City

Thank you so much!! The ancestors I am looking for would be William and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Ferguson and their daughter Malinda. I believe that William's mother's name may be Hannah. Elizabeth's mother is probably Mary Mitchell (maiden name unknown).

FERGUSON:
William b. ca. 1809 GA
Elizabeth b. ca. 1815 GA
Hannah b. ca. 1788 SC
Malinda b. 1833 GA

MITCHELL:
Mary b. ca. 1780 GA

Mary probably died between 1850-60. The Ferguson family was in southern Alabama by 60. The Wm. Ferguson family and Mary Mitchell are in Mockinson Gap on the 1850 census.
