From "Henry County Georgia: The Mother of Counties" by Vessie Thrasher Rainer
Published 1971
p. 73

“This small mill on Walnut Creek, just below the bridge on Highway 20, in McMullan’s District was one of the last to grind corn and wheat in this locality.

McMullan’s District was actually settled by a number of members of the Harper family; but took the name from Jeremiah McMullen who had married Sarah Harper and settled on the creek across the road from the mill.

Other members of the Harper family who settled here together were: Rhoderick and Thomas Harper and Judith Harper, the wife of John Jackson.

Daniel Fargason (1806-1884) married in 1827 Nancy Harper, (1811-1852), daughter of Rhoderick Harper. Fargason’s Mill was on his place near his house. No certified records are available of detailed facts on the mill, but its purpose seems to have been to serve these related families in this community.

One of the millers at this mill was Jim Lester who married Mary Jackson, a member of this family. He later went to Price and Heflin’s Mill.

Fargason’s Mill was a favorite place for picnics about 1910. The mill house is gone, but the property remains in the possession of a descendent of Daniel Fargason.”

Note: My father told a story of taking a family outing at Fargason's Mill. It would have been between 1910 and 1915.

Re: Robert Clarence Teal and Ophelia Augusta "Gussie" Turner

This is definately my Clarence. He was Robert Clarence Teal I have a copy of my Grandfather's Birth Certificate which (Robert Gray Teal). It shows his father as Clarence Teal and Mother as Gussie Turner. This is the same as Augusta Ophelia Turner, nicknamed "Gussie".

I have also seen the record you see where he was living and showing as widowed, but I have not been able to find a record of her death. He shows up later in the Macon Georgia area with a new wife, whose name escapes me now. That ties into the story that he and ASA were railroad men and Clarance rode the Railroad line from Macon to Atlanta.

I would be very interested in the Turner connection that we share.

I was adopted OUT of the family at birth. My mother Francis Virginia Teal (now deceased) was the daughter of Robert Gray Teal. I met her and was reunited with my birth family when I was about 31 and have been trying to connect the dots ever since. I have become very close to my birthfamily and we share this information. We were all wondering about "Gussie"...What happened to her??

Thank you for sharing what you know. If you have any additional information, I would love to know about my "Turner Family".

Thanks again!

After going through some of my TURNER notes that are NOT related to me I think I have found the right family.

If so, Clarence is the son of Asa Teal and Mary E. (maybe
Emma)Steed
I have in my notes that Clarence and Augusta are in Griffin, Ga in 1900 with no children.
In 1900 he is living with sister MaryEtta Gillespie in Africa, Spalding, Georgia.
I noted that since the youngest child in 1910 was 2 years old and Clarence was listed as a widower it was a possibility Augusta died in childbirth or from complications of childbirth.
Also noted Georgia did not start keeping death records until 1919.

Also have notation of a Richard Clarence Teal (1903-1940)who has a death record with the parents of
Robert Clarence Teal and Augusta Turner. This child was not noted on an online family tree.

Searching for information on Robert Clarence Teal. He went by Clarence. He Married Gussie Turner and then she just drops off the radar! He then shows up around the Macon County Georgia area. Family story is that he was a railroad man and drove the train from Macon to Atlanta for many years. His father was known as "Acee" teal and he worked for the railroad too, I think. He was married to someone else......WHAT HAPPENED TO GUSSIE? I can't find her death, but he lived with the children in Griffin Georgia with his sister before he went to the Macon Ga. Area. Anyone know what the story is? THanks!

The only William Thomas I’ve found in Griffin in the 1850 and 1860 censuses appears to be a brother or half-brother of B. G. Thomas, my g-g-grandfather. B. G. Thomas, a shoemaker, and his newly-wedded wife Eunice/Emma, a seamstress, were living in Griffin by 1850 (then Pike Co.). Some of the census information I’ve found is confusing, so I’ve included it here for you to see where my search for this Thomas family has led so far.

It looks to me like JAMES L. THOMAS (b. c1825, NC), B. G. THOMAS (b. c1828, GA), and SUSAN E. THOMAS DAVIS (b. c1831, GA) were children of GEORGE W. THOMAS (b. c1801, SC) by a first wife, then WILLIAM THOMAS (b. c1842, GA) was a later son by the same or a second wife. George married again abt. 1855, and again abt. 1863. The relationships of the older ones aren’t fully proved, but they were obviously related. Also, all three older males--George W., James L, and B. G.--were shoemakers, a skilled craft that often ran in families. BG’s and JL’s wives were dressmakers, and Susan Thomas Davis was a milliner.

In 1840, G. W. THOMAS in Butts Co, GA (adjacent to Pike and later to Spalding) was the only Thomas household in the area with children who could be all three--James L., BG, and Susan. George W. Thomas was likely a brother of Thomas Thomas, b. c1797 in SC, the only other Thomas family in Butts Co. that census. (Thomas Thomas was in Butts by 1830, but I can’t find George that census. Thomas Thomas was still in Butts Co. in 1850 and 1860, and he had a son William Thomas, but that William was b. 1844 and later named as William D. Thomas, married to Mary in 1870.)

1840 - Butts Co, GA - Dist. 614
G. W. THOMAS - Males: 1(10-14), 1(15-19), 1(40-49); Fem: 1(5-9), 1(30-39), 1(60-69)

In 1850, except for B. G. Thomas, the only other Thomas entries I found in Griffin are these (below) that are listed two pages apart. The information is confusing, but they could be for the same G. W. Thomas and son William. I can only find one G. W. Thomas and one William of the right ages in 1860. (I've seen duplicate entries several times in the census, apparently because one respondent is naming the household as it was on the official "census day" as they were supposed to be instructed, while the other respondent is naming the household as of the visitation day. In 1850, the official "census day" was June 1, but these two households weren’t visited until December 1850.)

1850: Pike Co, GA - Dist. 68 [Griffin] - listed 4 families from B. G. Thomas]

Elizabeth Thomas and family are living next to the family of John B. Thomas. The 1850 census shows him to be a son of Thomas Thomas (b. c1797, SC). “T. Thomas” was the only other Thomas family in Butts Co, GA in 1840 with George W. Thomas, and likely George and Thomas were brothers.

In the 1880 census, WILLIAM THOMAS, still in Henry Co, GA, lists both parents as born in NC. James L. Thomas, then a widower and “shoemaker” in Spalding Co, lists his birthplace as NC and his father born SC, mother born NC. In 1900, WILLIAM L. THOMAS is back in Africa Dist, Griffin, Spalding Co, and both parents are listed as born in GA (but that obviously seems to be an error).

Despite the confusions between NC and SC, combining the information above seems to show there were at least two brothers, George W. Thomas and Thomas Thomas, born probably in SC and living in Butts Co, GA by 1830-1840. (John W. Thomas in Pike Co, GA in 1840 could be another brother.) George likely had sons James L. Thomas, B. G. Thomas, and William Thomas, and a daughter Susan Elizabeth Thomas who married James M. Davis in Butts Co. in 1846. They were living in Griffin, Pike Co, GA by 1850. George married again abt. 1855 to Nancy C. Mitchell, a widow with two daughters from a previous marriage, and George and Nancy had three children. Then George married again abt. 1863 to Jane Elizabeth (or Elizabeth Jane), and had three children by her. Between 1860-1870 (the Civil War decade that severely affected Griffin and the local economy), George W. Thomas moved his family back to adjacent Butts Co, GA, where George W. Thomas died abt. 1869-1870.

At least that’s the best I’ve been able to make of all this so far. If you find out more about these folks or have corrections to make to any of the above, please let me know. Thanks!

Joan
I believe that Elizabeth's husband was Samuel, born bet. 1780-1790 and died in Jasper County, Georgia.

On the 1830 Jasper County census (with Samuel Boyd as head of family), there is a child listed as Deaf/Dumb under the age 14.

On the 1850 Pike County, Georgia, census (with Elizabeth LKU as head of family), her son Samuel is listed as "idiotic."

In the book "Abstracts of Deed Book A, Spalding County" there is the following record (with Elizabeth's son Jonas as Admin) :

Abstracts of Deed Book A
#412
State of Georgia
City of Spalding
June 16, 1853
pg 398
Jonas Boyd, said State and City, Admin of Samuel Boyd of Jasper Co., deceased, at public sale to Lucius Wagner, highest bidder, said State and City. $1135.00. Land in Spalding County, 3rd District, #113. Acres 202½.
Jonas Boyd, Admin. of Samuel Boyd, deceased
Witnesses: John T. Walker, J.B. Beall, JSC
Rec: January 19, 1854
Henry B. Holliday, Clerk.

There may be a will for Samuel Boyd in Jasper County.

Note: Spalding County didn't exist until 1851 and part of Pike was taken to form it. That's why this family was in Pike for the 1850 census year.

I do not know if he was born in Henry or Spalding County, but my great Aunt says a "farm in Griffin." There are indications he could have been a Methodist, but I really don' know for sure.
Hi,

I am looking for information on Elizabeth Boyd b. 1787 in VA. In 1850 she was living in Pike County with children William, Samuel and Jonas, all of whom were born in GA. It appears she may have been widowed by this time.

I am trying to ascertain the name of her husband. Was it Hugh by chance?

By 1860, Jonas was a slave owner in Spalding County.

Wondering if the wills are available for any of the above individuals. I am specifically looking for information regarding any slaves they would have owned.

But I'd love to know anything I can learn about the above family.

Thank you kindly,

Sara

Jim,
Hope you're still watching this list. This may be the family I am currently researching for one of my wife's cousins. Part of where I need assistance is from the 1880 US census, Africa District, Spalding Co, ED115, Pg23, Lines 34-37. A William is listed with son Robert and an older daughter-in-law named Lavonia (I think) and a grandson Henry P.

The grandson is Henry Parks Griffin, but I'm not sure who his father was. I'm pretty sure it's not Robert as he would have been 9yo at Henry's birth. So who is the father of Henry?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Keith

I am a BATES family researcher (John Bates Jr of York County, SC moved to Vaughn area of Spalding County, Ga) and have come across information that seems to link his daughter, Mary Lou (possibly Marilou) Brooks MCINTYRE, to as the wife of Luther Leon CHAMBERS with marriage after 1930 and probably before 1940. The family is originally from Hall County, Ga and show up on the 1930 Georgia, Spalding County, Union census.

Is anyone researching either the CHAMBERS or MCINTYRE families?

William G.
Hi Cousin Betty,

Any new news on the Humphreys? One mystery is the older brother James Alex. Humphreys b-1858. He was the brother of your Lula and my Robert. He is last found on the Moultrie 1900 Census w/ wife Nancy (Redfearn) and four sons. Nancy died in 1902. I have been in contact with the Grt Granddaughters of Alex. C., the oldest son of James. Hope you are well.

Wanda

I have a Bennett Richardson marriage in my family tree. James Reuben Bennett (b: 1796) to Sarah Eliza Richardson (b: 1805). My family were in Monroe (Forsyth) then Pike (Meansville then Williamson) and in the early 20th century in Spalding. Let me know if this is relevant to your query.
