George Washington Smith and wife Mary Ann Tyner Smith were living in Paulding co Ga in the 1850 census. The area they were living in became Polk co Ga when Polk co Ga was formed about 1852 if I remember right. I am trying to find a deed where George bought the land before 1850 if someone has a deed book. I am trying to find where George was from before Paulding co Ga and a deed might say where he was from when he bought the land. He died in Polk co Ga in 1859. Thanks, Ross

The information I passed along to you was a quick - VERY quick - internet search.

I don't know of an online repository of those specific documents. You might check with the tax assessor's office of those counties, to see if they have records from that era.

Are you certain he purchased the land? If he was related, he might have received the land as a result of a will. Or, he might have purchased the land from the estate, if the original owner's property was sold at death.

Check the probate records and find the will or estate settlement records of the original owner.

HEllo,
Thanks so much for the information on how to find the 1860 Mortality table for Polk co Ga. Could I ask another favor since you are so good at this?
David Smith who was born in 1810 bought land in probably 1829 from Martha Rollins who lived in Jasper co Ga. She had won the land in the 1821
Ga land lottery. It was located in Henry co Ga when she won tghe land but when Newton co Ga was formed it was then in Newton co Ga. Since David Smith was born in 1810 I am sure he bought the land in 1829 or 1830. He and wife Sarah Austin Smith were listed in tghe 1830 Newton co Ga census. I am trying to find where David Smith was from before he was listed in the 1830 Newton co Ga census and since tghe deeds usually start with something like Martha Rollins from Jasper co Ga and David Smith of _____county. I can not find a site thatg has Newton co Ga deeds and I can not find anyone that has a book or film of Newtosn co Ga deeds and thought you might know of a site that I could possibly find the Newton co Ga deeds. Thanks, Ross

Thomas was originally from Bartow County, GA and they were married there on July 5, 1888. I'm not sure where Leila was born.

I am having trouble finding their gravesite, though they are both recorded as having passed away in Cedartown. I am also having trouble finding/determining who their parents were.

These were the parents of my grandmother, Francis Estelle Hill Webster. My grandmother and her siblings were all born and raised (reared) in Cedartown.

Except for a brief email contact many years ago with a Hill cousin, whose email address is no longer valid, I have never had contact or relations with this side of my family. Which now seems a pity, since I am into my family genealogy now. All help is greatfully appreciated!
Hi, I am researching Andrew H. NUNIS and I need two things. First, I would like more information about his MURDER, which took place on October 13 or 14, 1922. He was from Cedartown (worked at the Standard Cotton Mill and had a wife and 8 children) but was killed in Cleburne County, AL, across the border. I'm hoping his death date will help make it easier for someone to find an article about it in the newspapers of the day.
Second, I'm not sure who his parents are/were. I am hoping that a newspaper obituary might provide information. Or, does anyone know if Alabama death certificates back then provided parent information for the deceased?
Thanks for helping. This is the first time I have ever made such a request.

I checked both the Cedartown Standard and the Polk Co. Cemetery books but did not find her listed. Since she died in Polk Co., you might want to contact Probate to see if they have her death certificate on file. It should list the cemetery. The Rockmart Library has the papers on microfilm so will try to get by there next week.
Jane

Seeking information on Lizzie Gossett who married Hosea Richard Sewell 16 OCT 1887 in Polk County Georgia. Just found out from my only living uncle that she was from ESOM HILL, GA. Esom Hill is located between Cedartown, GA and the Alabama line.

Lizzie gave birth to Mary Ellen (Mamie) Sewell 14 APR 1889 and Samuel S. Sewell 6 FEB 1892.

I assume Lizzie died between 1892 and 1895 because Hosea married Lila Miller 1 AUG 1895 in Cherokee County, Alabama.

Any info will be greatly appreciated as I have hit a brick wall with Lizzie who was my great-grandmother!
Oh ok..Our property lines met with Rimbert's and he had the old buildings just on the other side of the railroad tracks on Old Rome Road and he also had all the cows. His shop was the building in the fork just on the other side of the railroad tracks at the end of Stewart road. (Stewarts are my family)..I knew Rimbert since I was little but he was retired all the time I knew him. Is Raymond and Sam the same person? I know Sam drove a bus years ago when my dad was in school. Sam moved the doublewide in at the end of Stewart Road after Rimbert passed away. I learned alot of history about that area hanging out with Rimbert.

By 1880 his older children are married and his younger children are living as servants in other people's homes. He re-appears on the GA Census in Polk County - listed as a sawmill hand with a new wife and three daughters - then he disappears altogether. Was wondering if anyone had any info to share. Have tried to find information on the sawmill itself but can find nothing. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!
Suzanne DeVier

Looking for information on a Lee family

Hello, I am currently researching the family of James William Jefferson Lee and his wife Katie Pearl McKinley. William as he went by was born on Dec 5, 1888 in Pike County Georgia, the son of Joseph Jefferson Lee and Sarah Melissie Harris.

He married Pearl on July 22, 1906 in Pike Co. Georgia.

In 1910, the couple are living with William's parents, listed in the census as Joe J. Lee and Sallie Lee. William is listed as Willie Lee

They only have one son. named Guy M. Lee aged aged 2

In the 1920 Pike County Georgia Census four children are named.

Jaynell Lee, male, born about 1908
Henry L. Lee, male, born about 1911
Paul Lee, male, born about 1913
Mary Irma Lee, female, born about 1919.

So obviously Guy N. Lee and Jaynell are the same person

Sometime in the 1920, the family moved to Polk County Georgia where they appear in the 1930 Polk County Census. William is listed as William J. Lee and his wife a K. Pearl Lee.

Only two of their children are still living with them. Paul Lee and Mary Irma Lee.

The problem I am having is that I have not been able to locate Guy/Jaynell in any form in the 1930 census anywhere nor have I been able to locate Henry L. Lee in 1930.

I also have been able to find nothing about Paul or Mary Irma Lee after this date, it is like they dropped off the face of the earth. I stumbled across findagrave.com and found memorials with tombstone pictures for both William J. Lee, listed as W. J. Lee on his tombstone and his wife Pearl. I was surprised to see that they are buried in Magnolia Cemetery in Atlanta. William died in June 1963 and Pearl died in 1963 also..their tombstones only gives the year.

So i would like to learn more about their children and what happened to them and the last place I have found this family is Polk County.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Randy,
Guess we are cousins, if I read this right, my 2ggrandparents
were Thomas W and Judy Gurley on my fathers side.
I was in Rockmart, Ga for several hours last year and took some photos of their grave sites. I wish I had know their home was still there. My father was also Thomas W Gurley.
Are you familiar with the Gurley web site put together by Wayne Gurley?
Jan Gurley Blackburn
