Ira Lord and Effie Mae Autry were my grandparents. They are buried in the Union Christian Church cemetery in Watkinsville. Sherman Thomas Lord and Mary Elizabeth Sisk Lord are also buried there. I have the ancestry of the Sisk family from Ancestry.com. I have no information about M.E. Sisk Lord's mother except that her name was Nancy Brown. I haven't been able to find Ms. Brown's ancestry. If anyone has any information, I'd love to know.

Note: I've been told by family that Ira's mother was one half Cherokee, making him one quarter. Since the Sisk ancestry goes back to Ireland, Nancy Brown would have to have been Cherokee.

If you are coming from Oconee High School on Union Church Rd. take a left onto New High Shoals Rd. going back toward Watkinsville.

You'll go about a quarter mile and see a pond on the left and a house just beyond set some ways back off the road. From the intersection, this would be the second driveway on the left. The cemetery is back behind the house by the lake.

Like I said, the cemetery is in really bad shape. My time there was limited, so I wasn't able to locate the grave of my 4X great grandfather Jesse Butler, but I'm guessing his grave is unmarked since it's not on the survey posted by Natalie Davis.

It's located on private property in a used cow pasture...and right in these people's backyard. You REALLY need to get permission before going. But they are nice people.

Barber's Creek area

I have seen Barber’s Creek listed in some of my research and I was wondering if someone could explain where this area actually is. I know that a Civil War battle happened in this area as well. I am trying to figure out 2 main things –

1) Is this area close to the Mars Hill Road and William Daniell house area?

2) Does anyone know why it is called Barber’s Creek? Did a Barber family live there at some point?

I’m trying to figure out if possibly a Barber family lived near the Daniell’s because I have a William Barber marrying William Daniell’s daughter, Rachel in Clarke County in January 1810 who are my 3GGparents. I have found Daniell information at times, but I have not been able to find William Barber’s family although it seems that they lived somewhere in the area.

Depending on when your mother was born, you may not be able to find a birth certificate. Georgia did not begin keeping vital records for birth until 1919.

African-American Pierce Family

I'm seeking information on African-American Pierces that lived in Watkinsville some time prior to the 1900 census. My gradmother was Mary Pierce. Her parents were Cornelius Pierce and Fannie Henry or Henyard. It appears that they migrated to Walton County after 1895 as they are listed in Walton County on the 1900 and 1910 censuses. My great uncles (grandmother's brothers) Claud, Roy, and Felton all list on their WWI draft registration cards that they were born in Watkinsville. Roy was the youngest of the brothers and was born abt. 1895. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Benjamin Harrison Booth, Jr. - Born 27 July 1818 in Watkinsville GA and died abt 1882 in GA.
Son of B.H. Booth, Sr. (born 1798 and died 27 Dec 1836 in Clarke County GA) and Lucy Eliza Harris (1800 - ? Clarke County GA) married 24 Sept 1817. Possible other Booth children: Martha C.H. (1821), Walton Harris (1823), Elizabeth (1825), Virginia Beverly (1827), Mary Ann (1828), Thomas Y. (1830), Harrison (1832), and Eliza H. (1834).

The parents of Benjamin Harrison, Sr. are possible Thomas (3 Ap 1777 - 12 Apr 1834) and Martha Hicks Harrison (1775-1816)

This is the extent of what I have on them. Anything else would be greatly appreciated.

“Rambling In Rabun---Every publisher of a newspaper knows how important it is to keep family records, community history and vital statistics. So often I have gone out and asked people about their parents, and especially about their grandparents and most of the time they know almost nothing about their grandparents. I have made a vow that my grandchildren shall know something of their family history if I live and have the time to trace it up. But it is a job---scarcely no records---but I am making some progress.
I am beginning with my great-grandfather, Silas Cross, but the family now living know very little but somehow I got an idea that he was buried at high Shoals, [Oconee Co. GA] and that thing kept bobbing up in my mind, and last Sunday after dinner I told my wife to get out her Easter bonnet, that we were going to High Shoals. I ran out and invited a couple of neighbors to go with us and they refused, doggone ‘em. Then I came over to town and invited J.R. & Susie and they had other engagements, doggone them too. Then I thought we would go down to Demorest and get Edwin & Winnie but they said the babies were asleep and they couldn’t go. I said just stay at home, you’ll never know anything no how. I had never been to High Shoals but knew about where it was located, in between the two main highways leading south, so we did not stop until we arrived at Watkinsville and got directions over to the Shoals, where one of the first and largest cotton factories in Georgia was located. A wonderful waterfall on the Oconee River called the High Shoals furnished the power for the factory. The old brick factory is crumbling down and the town has a dilapidated appearance. But noticing a crowd of folks sunning on a porch, stopped and told them I wanted to visit the cemetery and asked them about any family by the name of Cross being buried there. Some of them said that they did not know much about it but an elderly lady spoke up and said that if we would drive up the street a piece we would find the oldest lady in town and that she could tell us what we wanted to know. I think her name was Mindling and her hair was white as the driven snow and her body a little palsied, but her mind as bright as new money. I asked her if she knew anybody by my name and she said, “Yes, two of my best friends were Uncle Nimrod Cross and his good wife, Aunt Sarah.” I then asked about Uncle Nimrod’s father. She remembered him and said that they all called him Grandpa Cross, and that he attended the Baptist church just across the street, but that was a long time ago. She said he came there to visit his son and that he married the Widow Oats, and that the widow lived just across the way and she thought they were buried in the community where the widow’s people lived. She directed me to go across to the cemetery just across the street and find a trail at the back of the cemetery that led up the hill to the old burying ground and that the first thing we would find would be a rock enclosure covered with hug-me-tight vines and that Aunt Sarah’s folks were buried there and that Uncle Nimrod and Aunt Sarah were buried right next to the enclosure, but that she did not remember that the graves were marked.
Winding my way up the vine clad trail through the underbrush I found the rock enclosure and the graves of the uncle and aunt marked with splendid marbles, and to my surprise, the grave of the old grandfather with a marble slab informing me that he was born in 1809 and died in 1880, just 60 years ago.
I stood at the foot of that grave and said to myself, “Well, old fellow, I have been chasing you for years and what a beautiful place to end an active life---on top of this vine covered hill, among these stately pines, overlooking the most wonderful waterfall in Georgia, just waiting for the Resurrection. When I first got acquainted with you, you were coming down through Virginia with an emigrant train, winding your way to South Carolina, cutting out a road, fighting Indians, occasionally killing a wild turkey and, finally landing in Old Pickens, now Oconee County, South Carolina, and then marrying Sarah Wilson of near Walhalla. Then taking up land and moving down to Hall County, Georgia, settling and establishing a farm, helping to establish Old Mt. Salem Baptist Church, taking part in organizing the Lawrenceville Association, that then covered all that territory from Gainesville to Stone Mountain and all between the Chattahoochee River on the west and Oconee River on the east. Serving the association four years as its clerk and treasurer before the Civil War, rearing six sons and sending four of them off to fight for the Confederacy, one of whom was killed in battle, one contracted fever and died in Virginia. That was my grandfather. Another had an arm shot off and the other received severe wounds from which he was a cripple for life. I imagine you would have liked to have been buried beside your first wife at Old Mt. Salem, but at that time it would have taken two or three days to have made the trip in a wagon, and that was not a practical thing to do. Sleep on and take your rest and someday I’ll meet you over on the other side and then I want to sit down at your feet and hear you tell about the first settling of the country, and how your parents came to leave old England to cross the waters for a new country. Hi there!

Here's what I found for you at the Oconee Library. John Edward Rooks, Jr. is NOT in the Bethabara Baptist cemetery. This listing is in the Clarke Oconee Cemetery book.

However, I DID find a John E. Rooks in the Barrow County cemetery book. Barrow County is just ten miles up the road and borders Oconee.

Here's the info on that:
John E. Rooks
12 May 1866 - 9 Oct 1911
buried Nazareth United Methodist Church Cemetery, Dee Kennedy Rd in Barrow County

buried next to him is Eliza Jane Rooks
19 Jul 1891 - 11 June 1911 daughters of J. E. & S. A. Rooks

The cemetery is listed in the book Barrow County GA Cemeteries, published in 2000 by the East GA Genealogical Society. The information was on p. 338

There was no other reference to anyone with the name John in any surrounding counties.

My wife has folks in Oglethorpe County, and while we were tracking down some of her people out there, we passed by a small family plot in a field.

Specifically, it is located at the intersection of Sandy Cross Rd., Smithonia Rd., and Highway 22, between Colbert (Madison County, Georgia) and Lexington in Oglethorpe County, Georgia.

There are only three burials:

Fred Lewis Jarrell (b. 1 Jan 1871; d. 13 Oct 1897)
Louisa Rebecca Howard (Jarrell) (b. 26 Sep 1848; d. 14 Aug. 1906)
John W. Jarrell (b. 12 May 1842; d. 30 Oct 1924)

If you're interested, I've got pictures and a more complete survey that I'd gladly send to you.

I've also traced my family back to Valentine Michael from Bretagne, France.

It appears that Valentine Michael and his wife Marie Motier immigrated with their son Guillahume (William), and at some point after ended up in North Carolina. Guillahume had a son named Jacob.

Jacob Michael had a son named son William who moved to Oglethorpe County, Georgia in 1791. Sometime after, he moved to Walton County and purchased land near Good Hope (on what is now Moina Michael Road).

William's brother John (my great, great, great grandfather) either moved to the Walton-Oconee area with William or moved here sometime after.

I know where William is buried (along with his wife and 9 of his children) and am planning on publishing a survey of the cemetery sometime in the next few weeks.

I live with my family just across the road from my great grandfather Timothy Lumpkin Michael's home. Timothy Michael was the son of Antoine "Mack" Michael who was the son of William's brother John.

I would love to compare notes with you if you are interested.

I should also point out that Klutts cemetery is in deplorable condition. This is because the fence that once stood around this cemetery has been torn down by the owner of the land. This allows cows to walk through the cemetery trampling and despoiling the graves.

Almost every single headstone has either been toppled over or in many cases broken.

In my short visit, I saw Dickens, Biggs, Crowe, Cozard, Brown burials. I would estimate there are 40-50 graves marked with formal stones and a dozen more fieldstones.

Replying to my own post here, but I got a copy of the History of Oconee County for my birthday, and there is an article on Dr. Elder. I'll summarize it here:

Dr. Lidsey Herbert Elder was born near Goshen, Georgia on July 14, 1886. He graduated from the College of Eclictic Medicine and Surgery of Atlanta (now Emory University School of Medicine) in 1913. He paid his way through medical school by planting, working, and collecting a crop of cotton.

Dr. Elder treated black and white families in the Bogart area from 1913 to 1956, delivering an estimated 1700 babies.

He carted around the dirt roads of Oconee County through rain, sleet, and snow. His glove compartment served as his filing cabinet, and he carried his "yellow pills" in his front pocket.

Dr. Elder served as mayor, councilmen and member of the Board of Education of Bogart during his 43 years of service. He died July 4, 1956. In 1969, a memorial marker was placed near the center of town, funded by the Bogart High School Alumni.

I know this is an old post, but I thought I'd put in my two cents in case anyone else was interested.

Antoine "Mack" Michael and his wife Susan Butler Michael are indeed buried at what was formerly Mt. Carmel Church in Walton County.

The church has changed its name, but it can still be found on Mt. Carmel Church Rd.

I've attached pictures of the headstone they share.

I've read that John Michael, Antoine's father, might also be buried at Mt. Carmel, but there is no headstone with his name. There appear to be graves in the nearby woods, but they are unmarked apart from some field stones.

Another account has him requesting to be buried next to a daughter who drowned as a child in Oglethorpe County, presumably on the land the family once farmed there. Does anyone have any insight into this?

I'd love to get in touch with some others researching the Michaels.

It appears that our relatives were very important to the Revolutionary War of Independence. Therefor, we are related by marriage to all the kings of France and that line goes back to Mark Anthony.I was sent a full geneological mapping by the Oconnee County Library.

I see that no one else has answered your question about Reynolds Plantation so I will give a brief overview since the Reynolds are one of my families. There was NOT an old Reynolds "plantation" as such and certainly not in that location. It is a name that was adopted/assigned to this development. Mercer Reynolds is written up under "Linger-Longer" in the Greene County, Georgia, history book by Rice as is Woodville. This land was acquired by Mercer Reynolds probably during the Depression. This land was on the Oconee River and became lake front when the river was damned up to produce electric power. I have not traced those land titles. The Reynolds were orignally from the other side of Greene County at Woodville. This area was originally Wilkes,then Oglethorpe and then Greene County c. 1799. Mercer Reynolds is a single man living at Woodville in the 137-138th GMD in 1900. He married a Davidson/Davison. He moved to Chattnagoona (sp.?), Tennessee. His descendent bought out or into the George Bush's oil company in Texas and was partly in charge of W's inaguration(sp?). That Mercer Reynolds was appointed Ambassador (sp?) to Switzerland for a time. The Reynolds, Durham, Lindsey, Bowles/Booles cousins intermarried in the Woodville area, Temperance Bell Crossroads on over to Bethesda Baptist Church. Early Reynolds were either unchurched or attended maybe Baird's Town or some other church as I did not find them when I published the early Bethesda Church minutes. James Reynolds(Runnels, etc.) was married to Susannah/Sukey Malone, daughter of Daniel Malone, prior to the early 1770's in Lunenburg County, Virginia. This James Reynolds MIGHT have been from Scotland as he witnessed deeds for a company of Glascow in Lunenburg County, Virginia. Other stories are that he might have been a tailor or a cabinetmaker. Daniel Malone d. 1795 in Halifax County, Virginia, with a will. James Reynolds was in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, by 1798. There is a Reynolds Cemetery at Woodville. There is a big think red hard cover book about the Malones by Dr. Randy Malone of Georgia. It took me years to get these families straightened out because of mixed up family tradition. My ancestors were Patsy Reynolds/Runnels, dau. of James, who married 1801 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, to Samuel Durham, son of Abraham Durham. My Samuel and Patsy Reynolds Durham lived at Woodville. Abraham Durham d. in Clarke County, Georgia, 1826 with a will. My line of Durhams were "grapevine" kin to the Durham Doctors of Clarke/Oconee County, Georgia.

There were several men of the Elder family with the name Doctor or Dock for instance Doctor Williamson Elder and then the there was a physician Dr. John Griffin Elder. I am interested in the history of the Reynolds Plantation located in GA. It is currently a 7,000-acre lakeside residential & resort community which lies on Lake Oconee.

The Creek Indians settled in this region some 250 years ago. Treaties in the late 1770 have ceded Indian lands to Colonial Georgia. Discharged soldiers were honored with parcels of land. Mercer Reynolds was one beneficiary.

Generations of Reynolds’ have kept ownership of these parcels that now make up the Reynolds Plantation. When the resort opened in the 1980’s, it was chaired by a Mercer Reynolds from Cincinnati, OH.

I would be most interested in any information pertaining to the history of the plantation. In particular, information on the land ownership, descendants, ancestors, or biography of Mercer Reynolds. Thank you.

I checked the Cemetery Inscriptions of Oconee Co GA for you. It was published in 1994 by the Clarke/Oconee Genealogical Society.

In Oconee I found

Mrs. Eliza Jarrell page 154
Bethabara Baptist Church Cemetery ( US HIghway 78) still an active large church
1868- relict of Geo. A. Jackson aged 60 yrs

She was the only one in Oconee County
I checked the Jackson County Tombstone book but no Jarrells - do note that this is not a very comprehensive book for this county.

Try checking with Bethabara church - I think they have a website - and have them check their membership rolls for you... their rolls go back to 1842 when the church was founded.

There were no Jarrells in Clarke.

There are also several Rowden in the next county to the west ( this church sits almost on the county line) in BARROW county. They were all very recent burials (not Edwin): Docia, Doris, Edna, Filamar, Jack, Kay, Myrtice, STeve, and Talmadge. If you need them, let me know.

I also checked the Jackson book but didn't find Edwin. Do know the the Jackson county book is not very comprehensive so we could well be there. Also Houston is actually Hoschton, right on the Jackson/Barrow county border so be sure to check both counties for anyone livingin that area.

You might contact Bethabara Church as they have a pretty active historic group. Their membership roles go back to 1842 when the church was founded. You possibly could catch this family going into that church and find out if dad was with them at that time or perhaps where they came from.

POW/MIA Korean War, Oconee Co. HARDY

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Oconee County GA as his home of record.

Soldier:THOMAS RANDOLPH HARDY
Born: December 25, 1931
Date of loss:Sept. 19, 1951. Killed in Action in North Korea. His remains were never recovered.

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 70families in Georgia that have not been located. There is one family from Oconee County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

The courthouse in Oconee county is located in the old downtown section of Watkinsville. Coming from anywhere in Athens, you would get on the what is called the Perimeter Road, the loop that circles Athens proper (Highway 78/Loop 10). If you are coming from Atlanta, take Highway 316 east and exit at the loop going south and west (the signs are confusing there). At the point of the circle that is due south, take the exit marked Highway 441 S marked to Watkinsville and Madison GA. At about the fifth traffic light, about 2 miles south, you will see a Race Trak gas station on your right at the intersection of Hog Mountain Road. Go straight through this intersection to the next light, where you will take a LEFT onto Highway 15 and Business 441 ( you are actually turning off the 441 bypass here). This takes you about a mile into the old tiny business district (all 2 blocks of it) The courthouse is across from the historic Eagle Tavern. You can park in front of the courthouse for free. Everyone is pretty casual there but they also don't get many genealogical researchers and can't help you find things - you have to sort things out yourself. If you get that far, be sure to stop at the Watkinsville Library that has a great local genealogy section that is open all the hours the library is. Someone donated the money for the library to build a new add on room for genealogy and the holdings are great. To get to the library from the courthouse: turn left onto the road in front of the courthouse (highway 15, called Main street here) and in one short block there will be a traffic light (Chicken Express restaurant on right) This is marked Highway 53 (Experiment Station Road - can you tell we're in the country here??) Turn left onto Highway 53 and the library is not even 1/4 mile on right, between the county health department first, and just past it the post office and sheriff's department. Good luck - will help anyone you needs access to those spots.

Anderson is about an 1 hour 20 minute drive from this area. It's the nearest big (relatively, ha, ha) city across the border from here where you could get married. For a LONG time SC was a marriage destination. I think SC had different marriage rules - I don't think the age limit was different but I think you didn't have to have blood tests or such. Don't quote me on that! When I lived in FL in the 1960s people ran to GA to get married because the age limit in GA used to be 14. SC didn't start keeping any kind of vital records until 1913 so be forwarned about things before that. Do you think perhaps they had relatives in that area also? Good luck

I live in Madison County, but no luck on anything here. I had been tring to do some research on his Military service, however it hasn't been easy with him not being a very talkative man. I found on Ancestry.com my first lead. A WW2 enlistment record. I'd like to get a copy of this original record for one. It stated he lived in Oconee county and entered in at Atlanta. I'd like to check this out to see if it had any other information. I haven't ever been to Oconee county. Can you tell me how to get to the courthouse / library there from Madison county ?

My Dad was married a total of 3 times. 1st to Leila Morehead, I have a marriage date for them from Athens, but no divorce date. 2nd he married Monnie Ray Hooper, I have a divorce date for this marriage but no marriage date. 3. was to my mother. By his 1st marriage he had 5 daughters. Jackie, Brenda, Peggy, Jeanette, Wanga. I have only met Jackie. Sadly she died back in @ 1992. I didn't find out til my Dad's funeral. I wanted to list his daughters from his first marriage but didn't know where they lived. A cousin told me she had already died 2 years before. From the divorce record with Monnie, she retook her maiden name and apparently they had no children together. Since it had N/A listed on the papers.

Thank you so much for looking so hard for me. I really have no idea where to look for their Marriage or Divorce dates. The seemed to move alot all over Georgia. I have narrowed down the marriage date to between 1910 - 1915. and the divorce was at least by April of , at this monet i forget what year, but due to his 2nd marriage that I found in Clarke County, Georgia. The have lived so far that I know of was in Georgia counties has follows, but could be many more... She was from Pulaski County and he was from Madison county. They have lived in Coffee county, Madison county, Talbot county, Oconee County, and Dodge County that I know of so far. He later remarried to a Mrs.Louise Thomas in Clarke County, Georgia and sometime shortyl there after moved to Ohio. Where he later died. When he died he was listed has a widow and had lived in Ohio for 15 years. His body was brought back to his hometown of Madison County, Georgia and burial took place some 11 days after his death.

If you ever happen to be at the courthouse of libary, will you please keep your eyes out for any information on Burnard Jackson Jones. He is my Dad. He passed when I was 16 but he was a very quiet man. I recently found he inlisted in the Military there in Oconee and he surved in WW2. I've been tring to find out anything on his service record, has well has any other information on his side of the family, has he didn't seem to be close with his family. I never got to know his side of the family.

I went to the Oconee County courthouse today to help you out. There is no record of either a marriage or divorce for these people. The marriages are not indexed between 1910 and 1937 but I looked on each page beginning in January 1910 through Dec 1916. Several Jones boys but nobody with a similar first name and no bride of the name you indicated.

The divorces are not indexed either. They appear to be in the minutes of the Superior court, housed by the county clerk at the courthouse. I looked through the pages from 1942 - 1946 and could not find their names.

If you have other ideas of where to look, please post.

I am tring to find the marriage and divorce records of Wally Flemin Jones & Irene Isabel McAllister. Marriage date would be between 1910 - 1915. Narrowed down from obituaries and census records. Then the Divorce date would have been some time between 1945 ( est. birth year of last child ) - April 19,1948 ( marriage date to Wally's 2nd wife.in Clarke County, Georgia ). WW2 enlistment records for 3 of their sons all show them living in Oconee County between 1942 - 1945. None of whom where married at that time, so, I assume they were still living at home.

Also, looking for the birth date and place of another son Thomas Goss Jones abt. 1945 also, believed to be in Oconee County, Georgia.

I am trying to locate information concerning an old house (circa 1875) that may have been built or occupied by William J. and/or Wiliam Z. Hancock. I am trying to find out when it was built and by whom it was built. It is located on Astondale Road in the Bishop community in Oconee County. The two gentlemen noted are buried in the Bishop cemetery. Wm J. died in 1937 (born 1859), and Wm. Z. died in 1936 (born 1885). Possibly father and son? The property may have also belonged to the Mayne, Woodis, or Thomas families (nearby landowners), but was purchased by the family of the current residents from William Z. Hancock circa 1920. Thanks!

In my copy of Cemetery Inscriptions of Oconee County, Georgia, there are two graves listed for Cook. They are Cook, Elizabeth; b. 4 Dec., 1773; d. 10 July, 1840; wife of Zadoc Cook. and Cook, Hon. Zadoc; b.18 Feb., 1769; d. 3 Aug., 1863; Member of Georgia Assembly 1806 - 1824 and United States Congress 1816 - 1819.

Directions: Travel west on Highway 78 to intersection of Highway 78 and Mars Hill Road. Continue on Highway 78 about 2.2 miles to Ruth Jackson Road. Turn left onto paved Ruth Jackson Road and travel about .6 miles to dirt road on left. The cemetery is about .1 mile down dirt road on the right. Seeking information on John F Peed who enlisted in CSA Company I, 3rd Regiment, Georgia Infantry during April 1861.
The companies of the 3rd Regiment were recruited in the counties of Clarke, Burke, Dawson, Dade, Madison, Baldwin, and Oconee.
John F Peed died 2 July 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Trying to determine which of these counties was home to John F Peed. Believe he is my 2nd Great grandfather.
Have searched for more information on him for over 20 years. Help appreciated.

Fairly recent obituaries can be found in the "Online Athens" which is the online part of the Athens GA newspapers called the Athens Banner Herald. They link with legacy.com some sort of national obituary database. I went as far as I could without paying, but they want a small fee for the whole thing ($3). Here's what I was able to copy for you.

The next time I'm at the library I'll see what I can find for you. The deaths in Watkinsville are usually reported in the Athens GA newspaper called the Athens Banner Herald. Do you know if this lady actually died in Watkinsville (Oconee County). There is not a hospital here so if people were hospitalized they died in Clarke County. Of course, they could have been at home or in a nursing home. There is a local weekly paper called the Oconee Enterprise. I'll have to see if anyone has it on microfilm around here.

Try the Athens Banner Herald newspaper. It is on microfilm at the University of Georgia library here in Athens Oconee County did have its own little newspaper - I'm not sure whether back issues were microfilmed or not. I know the local Oconee library doesn't have them but the University might. Since Mr. Branch was a well known Oconee man, I'm sure he'll be in the Athens paper

Be sure to check out the book called "Bishop GA: The ancient roots, rich history and enduring spirit by Celestea Gentry Shartp pub 1996 Wolfe Publishing Company Mr. Branch is mentioned repeated in this book.

Weldon Branch is also listed in the Oconee County Abstract of Wills 1875-1966. He is listed as a son in the will of his father John J. Branch, written 23 April 1920 recorded 15 August 1921. The summary is on page 45 of the book

Woodis Cemetery is also called the Nunnally Cemetery. It is inventoried in the Oconee County Cemetery book. From Ashford Methodist Church (downtown Watkinsville) travel 1.0 m south on Hwy 441 Business to Old Bishop Rood. Turn left on the road and go 1.3 miles. The cemetery is next to a trailer in an open field but you can easily see it from the road if you know about where it is. It is in an open field surrounding by a rail fence. It is not well maintained even though there are still lots of Nunnally family around the area. It is listed on page 64 of the book "Cemetery Inscriptions of Oconee County, published in 1994.
The oldest burial is a Nunnally who was a Revolutionary Soldier. The Winder GA chapter of DAR (Sunbury Chapter) put a plaque on his tomb about 20 years ago. Many monuments still survive. I have pictures of the Nunnally tomb taken for our local DAR displays.
If anyone needs pictures, the fall/winter is the best time as the fire ant mounds are lower and the vegetation dies back!

I would guess that there are about 40 graves in there, many with markers.

Their daughter, Elsie Malissa Clementine Bailey, was my great-grandmother. I have lots of info on her line, but don't know about everyone else. Hello! I looked up the Name Fielding in the Oconee County Cemetery Book and found nine all of whom are buried at the Antioch Christian Church. None matched the names you listed.
there was a "Willy S. Fielding" listed but he was born in

From Connecticut Town Birth Records, pre-1870 (Barbour Collection) Samuel
Fielding b. 18 June 1794 in Hebron, CT to Samuel Fielding and Elizabeth. I
found in CT marriages that a Samuel Fielding married a Lydia Bowles 25
January 1820. Another record says that his parents were Samuel Fielding and
Elizabeth Alvord. If he died in Feb of 1880 in Georgia there is not a death
certificate to confirm the names of his parents. Georgia Death certificates
did not begin until 1919 and then was not complete. There may be a notice
in the Athens newspaper about his death. It appears that his first wife may
have died but in 1850 there are no children b. before 1828 so they must not have had any or they married before 1850. I found a Samuel Fielding and wife (no children) of about the
right age in the 1820 census of CT. Samuel Falding (Ancestry spelling)is in Clarke in 1830. There are 3 children.

Clarke County Georgia Marriage Records 1803-1909 has Samuel Fielding to Elizabeth Nott (Nutt?)(or Mott)(or Knott) May 22, 1828 Book B, p. 130. I did not find any Fielding names in the Clarke Co., cemetery book but it does not include Oconee Hill Cemetery.

Oconee Cemetery Book has Charlotte "Lottie" Fielding b.October 1845 d. 31 January 1943, Martha "Mattie" Graves and Susie Fielding Graves all buried in the Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Oconee Co., GA. Daughter Lydia married a Mooney. Possibly this is where Samuel and Elizabeth are buried. Hope this helps.

I am not just at a brick wall but I think there is even a mote dug around it. I am and have been trying to locate where my Great-Great Grandparents, Edwin and Nancy P. Toney Rowden are buried at.. My mother said she remembers them living in Houston which at that time it was Jackson County. I found: ROWDEN, ED D (1900 U.S. Census)
GEORGIA , JACKSON, 257-MILITIA DIST with wife Nancy and daughter Armindy, then in the 1910 census of Georgia, I find his wife, Nancy and daughter Minnie living in Oconee County, Georgia on Daniels Ferry Road, and Nancy is listed as a widow and Minnie as single. This of course indicates that Edwin has died. So I guess he died somewhere between Jackson County and Oconee County. If anyone could help me with this I sure would appreciate it. I see it's been a long time since you've posted, but I would like to respond. My husband's father's family is from Oconee. Husband's father is James Craft and his father was John Martin Craft which married Dessie Lou Magness(daugh of Enos & Mary Ann Gooch) James has talked abit about an Uncle Sim but he doesn't know much more. His memory is getting slow. John Martin's father was also John Martin married Elizabeth Crow, but that is as far as I can get and then a dead end. Hope this will help you or someone else out there. Anyone please reply if you have any other info on Crafts. I have more on Gooch and Magness(not much more on Magness).

Would you look in your book about the people and history of Mars Hill Baptist Church and seeif there were any Echols or Rays listed about 1800-1813. My ancestor was Solomon Ray who died in Clarke co Ga in 1813. He married Jane Echols in 1796 and they went to Jackson co Ga by 1799 and when Clarke co Ga was formed in 1801 their property was in Clarke co Ga and later the land they had owned was in Oconee Co Ga. Jane Echols Ray was related to Milner Echols somehow. Would you see if there is any mention of Solomon Ray or George Ray or Samuel Ray and any Echols aobut that time. The Fambroughs, Harris, Ray, Finley/Findley, Maxey families are all tied together through marriages. Fambrough and Maxey families both moved down to Oglethorpe, Greene and thereabouts in GA. They came from VA. The Ray and Finley/Findley families, also, came from VA and were related through marriages and moved at the same to Morgan, Clarke(Oconee), Greene co, GA about 1790. The, also lived in the Oglethorpe Co area for awhile. I am stuck on the parents names of Joseph Henry RAY and James Harris. I hope someone out there will know of these parents names, so I can hopefully figure out HOW they are tied into the rest of the RAY & HARRIS families.

“He Cursed His God---Athens, Georgia, August 28: William Haygood, while profaning on Monday at High Shoals declaring there was no God; no Heaven and no----had his tongue paralyzed.
The matter has caused a great sensation in that community.
There is a sequel to the story which came from High Shoals, of William Haygood, who lost his speech while cursing God and religion. After forty-eight hours of numbness his speech has come back.
All day Monday and Tuesday Haygood prayed, asking forgiveness. The crowds at the big revival prayed for him. At last night’s meeting he suddenly rose from his knees and began to talk. The congregation was amazed.
The first words he uttered were a profession of religion. Then he said he had been forgiven his great sin.
The entire community is greatly stirred up over the affair. Haygood says he will devote the rest of his life to preaching the Gospel.”

I am trying to find out what happened to a child named Jessie May Burgess. She is buried in the David Elder Cemetery on some private property off Elder Mill Road. She was born in 1900 and died in 1905. I believe the day of her death was March 13. If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear from you. Thanks.

I am searching for any information on my great, grandfather, Wiilliam Thomas Butler (born 1870) and his family. He was the son of William Butler (born ca 1847) and Mary Frances Burnett (born ca 1842-1846) and the grandson of Bedford Burnett (born ca 1808 and died ca 1867) and Mary Jeffries (born ca 1818). All of these were Clarke County, Georgia residents at one time. Tom also lived in Walton County, Elbert County, and Hall County, Georgia. He died in Hall County, Georgia and is buried in Walton County, Georgia. Mary Frances lived in Barrow County, Georgia with one of her sisters in the early 1900's.

I would like to be able to find the graves of Bedford Burnett and Mary Jeffries Burnett and William Butler and Mary Frances Burnett Butler. The sister that Mary Frances lived with is buried in Winder. But I've been unable to find Mary Frances' grave.

My mother is wanting to find out about the siblings of William Thomas Butler - her grandfather's sister's. The youngest one was name was Levy or Levie O. Butler. She was probably born about 1878. We don't know anything else about her. We are assuming that this is a female because of the cenus records.

The oldest sister, Sarah V. Butler or Aunt Sallie was born 1873. She was put in Milledgville Sanitaruim sometime after the mid 1920's. She died in 1947. She is buried in Walton County, Georgia.

If anyone knows anything about any of these people I would like to hear from you.

I'm searching for the parents and other ancestors for these Moore children, who were all born in the 1830s in SC. John Richard's son said they were from Walhalla, SC.

Here's what I know thus far. John Richard was born August 17, 1830 SC but married a Malinda Elizabeth Martin in Hall Co Ga on May 13, 1860.

His brother, Joseph married Sarah Jane Hamilton in Pickens District SC November 5, 1858 - They were both living in the Pickens District at the time or marriage. Subsequently they moved to Hall Co Ga.

Sarah Jane was the daughter of Ellison and Agnes Hamilton of York and Pickens District SC.

Sarah Jane's brother, James Alexander Hamilton married Malinda Ann Moore of Pickens District. Subsequently, they moved to Hall Co Ga also. - the Gainesville Ga area.

I know that Joseph and John Richard Moore are brothers - and I strongly suspect Malinda Ann Moore is their sister.

Both Sarah Jane and James A Hamilton married into the Moore family.

Can anyone help me in figuring out who John Richard, Joseph and Malinda Ann Moore's parents were?? Thanks,

Would you look in your book about the people and history of Mars Hill Baptist Church and see if there is a listing for Echols and Rays about 1800-1813. Solomon Ray married Jane Echols in 1796 in Wilkes co Ga and by 1799 they were in Jackson co Ga and when Clarke co Ga was formed in 1801 their land was in Clarke co Ga and later it was in Oconee co Ga when it was formed. Solomon Ray died in 1813 and I thought your book might say how he died. I know the Echols and the Rays attended Mars Hill Baptist Church about 1800-1813. You don't indicate what years you are looking for, but perhaps this little tidbit will help.
My mother and her family lived in a house they rented from the Branch's from 1937-1943, near Farmington, on a road that is today called Branch. My Aunt recalls that they called him Mr. Cal, and he lived in Atlanta and would come out to visit via train. I can probably give you a few more tidbits if that helps.

I'm not sure we have the same Victor, but the lines seem so close together, with pilgrims, and victors and edward. My Grandpa was Victor Edward Adams. He was born and lived in Bishop until maybe 1940 or so when he and my Grandma, Mary Alice Pike moved to Savannah, Ga., where I have lived all of my life. Grandpa's dad was Fred Adams, married to Fannie Lou(Lucy) Avrett(sp?)she died in savannah in 1956(?). Our family arrived in Morgan, as far as I can tell around 1910 or so. My GGGrandfather Bob, Francis(Franklin) Robert Cicero Adams is listed in an Oconee history book which is at the GHS(Georgia Historical Society) here in town as a painter, blacksmith and carpenter. There was a prominent business owner in Bishop by the name of Victor, and I often wonder if he was the person my Grandfather was named after. We've never had family in New Orleans, and my grandfather had polio so he wasn't a military man. Grandpa Adams was gentle and kind, and Grandma was a saint if there ever was one. I know of a Bobby Hanson here in Savannah, just for interest sake.

Is your Grandpa, Victor Adams retired from the coast guard or Navy? Lives in New ORleans or on the gulf coast?
I think he was my Dads cousing, first cousin. My uncle, Thomas Watson Hanson told me about him. I guess he would be about 82 or so. I think I have a picture of him when he was a little kid.
My Dad, Hugh, his brothers, Candler Dupree, Edward Eugene, and Thomas Watson were all Born in Bishop. My Grand dad married Mary Anna Adams in 1910(+ or - a couple of years). they were married at Andersons cross roads, a little south of Bishop. the Grave Yard has Edward, or Edgar Adams and Haden (Hate) Adams and most of their family buried there.

do not know any averetts, or adkersons. If Victor's Dad was Ed, he came to Morgan county about 1850. Served in the Civil War in Thompsons Artillery, as did his Brother and my Great gdad Haden. He was older , a school teacher and farmer.

My oldest uncle was married to Anne Pilgrim, from that area, and had three adopted children from that area. A lot of the Pilgrims came to Florida during the depression too. I do not have much information on them, but have one cousin that goes to their family reunions in central florida every year.

I believe that you're a cousin to my mother in law, through her father, Cleveland Willis Hanson. He was the twin brother of your grandfather, Candler Willie Hanson. They were both farmed out to a man named James Pierce, who was killed in a knife fight.

I am a Francis (Franklin) Robert Cicero Adams (born in White County 1859?-died 1936 in High Shoals)descendant. His father was James L. Adams, born 1819 in Brushy Creek, S.C, died in 1881? I think. I don't have records before me.My dates are probably far off. Fred was born in White Co., and My Grandpa Victor Edward Adams was born in Bishop Ga.
My Great Grand father was Fred Harmon Adams, Dillard, and Thomas Adkerson's brother. There were several other brothers,and a couple of sisters. Hey, we are connected. Hayden Dupree is Ed's brother, and the other Ed's son. His mother, Mary was a Dupree before getting married. I know I had a great aunt named Susie. She was my grandmothers sister. Grandmother was Mary Anna Adams, Also had uncle Cell (Marcellus) and others I cannot remember right now. Aunt Minnie Lee. I have not been able to find out much about Edward Adams Senior. He was in Watkinsville before coming to Rehobeth, a small cross roads just south of Bishop and east of the Cotton mill. Rosa is in 1910 Census Dist 12. Tarrytown GA. living with John Bragg and 3 children. John & Rosa are my Grandparents. I am searching for marriage dates on both marriages of Rosa.
Rosa d abt 1918. She is buried in a graved unmarked in the Ferguson Cem. right out side of Validia GA. The cem. has enlarged. I can not find any death recors are her grave.
In 1910 Census, she was living next door to her Father. Ben F. Paten. Rosa had a sister named Ida wood who was a widow by 1910. and m a Burton in 1900 in Montgomery Co GA. Ben F. Paten was b in Il. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know about Mary/Polly but I have a Mertis Ann Wood who I believe to be the sister of the William Wood who was married to Matilda Kines and living in the GA Factory District in 1850-1860. Mertis Ann Wood married David Royster in 1834 in Clarke Co. and both Mertis and David were deceased by 1860 as far as I can tell. I'm trying to find my family prior to 1870. They are, I believe, under the name of Dick and Evaline Goolsby in the 1870 census at Maxey's where it seems the majority of African Americans lived at the time. I know that Nancy Goolsby brought some slaves from nearby South Carolina. If I could just find them in the 1868 Voter Registration or somewhere it would help. The nearest white family was Abel Eberhardt. My great grandfather has personal value of $80.00 and they had five children ages 8-1. One of the children, Caroline, lived with the Childresses, Moses and Ann.

Joe Radd Cemetery

I am trying to find information on a virtually unknown, and mostly unmarked, cemetery near the Tappan Spur Rd and US Highway 441 intersection. There are three marked graves, Hager Griffith, Sallie (Wife of Jesse) Smith, and Mollie Holbrooks. The latest marked graves are from the 1940s, but there are about 100 unmarked grave. There was a small community at the Tappan (Turpin) Spur intersection from circa 1880 until the 1920s or 1930s. I am also interested in the history of this community and residents. I couldn't find evidence of a church, but such evidence may have been destroyed. Hager Griffith was noted to be a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The closest current Mt. Zion Baptist Church is in Farmington. It is possible that this is the same congregation and that the church moved at some point, perhaps the 1940s? I have tried to contact someone in this church without any luck, but would really like to speak with anyone that knows anything about this abandoned cemetery. I would appreciate any help with recording and preserving the history of this cemetery and who is buried there. Thank you.

Just came from library looking for the Stephens cemetery, there is none listed for Oconee County. I also did not find any of the names you were looking for in any of the cemeteries.

However, in the History of Oconee County Georgia there was an entry that stated that a David Stephens owned 72 acres in the Barber Creek area. No other info given.

I have an ancestor named Henry Britton McDonald who was living in Clarke/Jackson or Oconee County from about 1799 to about 1820. Other McDonalds in the family were here also. I just found through USGS that there is a place called Britton Estates Lake in Oconee county and a small inhabited area called McDonald in Clarke County, but they are only a couple of miles apart. Does anyone know anything about these places and how they got their names?

Or, any information about Brittons or McDonalds/McDaniels would be greatly appreciated.

His son James, Jr. was born in Georgia, married Martha Hale, and had 9 children. One child, Annie Beatrice married Isaac Lee Thrasher. She died at 29 after having 7 children. James Jr., Martha and Annie are all buried at Salem Church outside Farmington. I can't find any O'Dillons in the entire country other than those in Oconee County and I can't find any information on them aside from the initials of James Jr. other children and that Sr. married a woman named Delilah and adopted her children. Thanks for the information you sent on the Oconee O'Dillon's. I am still trying to track James O'Dillon Sr. The 1880 soundex cards show that he was born in Ireland about 1805. I assume Delilah was his second wife because of the large age difference. Also she had a daughter, Eliza, who is listed as a stepdaughter to James, Sr. She had a daughter herself, Mollie, who is listed as a step grandaughter to him. I have no information on whether Senior had other children. And I cannot find him on any passenger and emigration lists. Does anyone know whether the name was changed from Dillon when they came to this country?

His first son listed in a 1910 Talladega CO. AL census shows ? Dump ? TAYLOR is listed in Talladega Co. AL Silver Run with 3 children and wife, Beckey TAYLOR, son ROBERT TAYLOR as 13, daughter Synthia (CYNTHIA )TAYLOR as 10 , and son JOHN TAYLOR as 8 years old. We do not know this first child or his family, we know all the other children and all their families. My grandfather had some of his children here too! No one claims to be kin to our Taylor family. My grandfather was WILLIAM THOMAS TAYLOR SR. HE was born 1870 in Jefferson Co AL in 1870. He married GEORGIA ADA WILLIAMS. They had several children in AL and then moved to Fannin Co TX. William Thomas Taylor married 3 more times in TX and had a total of 12 children. If you have any information on this family I would love to hear from you. My great-great granduncle, James H. Dunnahoo, married Tabitha Ann Elder on 10/10/1852. They had at least 3 children and lived on a farm in the Watkinsville area. James was later a private in company K (Athens Guards) of the 3rd GA Infantry during the War Between the States. He was
wounded twice on July 2 at Gettysburg. He was in the same company as W. Joe Elder and they were neighbors after the war. Mr. Elder signed as a witness for James on his pension application in 1894. James moved to southwest GA around 1900 and was buried in Colquitt Co. after his death in 1907. Does anyone have any info on this family or their descendents? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Seeking descendents of Ed (Ed L./Edgar/Edward) Toole m. December 13, 1880, in Clarke County, Georgia, to Louisa/Laura Chancey. Ed Toole, son of Manning Toole and Mary D. Greene, was listed with his parents on the 1880 census of Oconee County, Georgia. They are suppose to have reared a family in and around Watkinsville and Athens. He may have been farming in the area, probably as a sharecropper, around 1915-1917. He may have died around 1925. Family stories relate that either he or one of his sons was shot and killed in a store robbery about 1911. That there was a trial and the murderers/robers only received a seven year sentence. The information does not match, but this is all the information I have on this branch of the family.

The GA Death Index includes a couple of records that might be related. By chance do you have Annie Eurel Hewell born around 1852 ? She was the daughter of John and Susan "Framan" (" " not sure of that spelling) Hewell. Annie married Andrew German in Gloucester County, Va. December 31st 1871. She was said to be 19 yrs old at that time.

According to Professor Merton. E. Coulter, who wrote a
History of Georgia, Watkinsville was named to honor the
Watkins family, and not a particular individual.

There was a Robert Watkins that was a Justice of the
Peace in Clarke County in 1803, I think it was, when
Watkinsville was the county seat. This Robert Watkins was
an ancestor of Frank B. Russell, who wrote a book on the
descendants of Reese Watkins back in 1975. There should
be a copy in the Georgia Archives and other libraries in Georgia.

Mrs Mary "Polly" Wood is listed in the 1850-1870 Clarke Co GA census and the 1880 Oconee Co GA census. In 1850, Benjamin McRee (age 83) of Clarke Co GA gave to Polly Wood "for natural love and affection"-six acres of land in the Wildcat District of Clarke (now Oconee) Co GA. Benjamin McRee's will and estate records do not mention Polly Wood so I do not know what her relationship was to him. Children:

1.Frances J Wood (b.ca.1820-liv 1889) md 1839 Clarke Co GA to Thomas Kines (d.pre.1850). Census: 1850-70 Clarke Co GA; 1880 Oconee Co GA.

2.Martha Ann Wood (b.ca.1822-liv 1897 Oconee Co GA) md 1841 Clarke Co GA to Jacob Burger (b.ca.1820-d.1864). Census: 1850-60 Clarke Co GA---I can't find her in the 1870 or 1880 census. Several of her children married in Greene Co GA in the 1870's.

3.William Wood (b.ca.1825-d.190_) md 1847 Clarke Co GA to Mary Loving (b.ca.1827-d.191_). Census: 1850,1900 Clarke Co GA; 1870 Oglethorpe Co GA. In 1889, Mary "Polly" Wood and Frances Kines mortgaged their 6 acres in Oconee Co to William Wood-he was to build them a house on their property for $50-to be paid at the death of Mary "Polly" Wood. In 1914, William's widow Mary Loving-Wood and her son William M Wood sold the six acres in the Wildcat District of Oconee Co GA known as the "Polly Wood tract" to C R Ward.

Hello, my name is Johnny Cook. I have been trying to find some information on my gggg-grandfather, Robert R. or A. Cook. He is believed to have been born around 1795 or 96 in Franklin County, Georgia. Everybody doing research on this line of Cooks can't get beyond Robert. He had 2 wives. The first we don't know anything about. The second was Anna Holder George. It has been suggested that his first wife was a Landers, or Gray, or a Rooks. Children by his first wife were: Elijah, George Washington (my ggg-grandfather), Martha, James H., Amanda, and Annie Elizabeth. About the only information we have on Robert, other than the above, is that he was in Jackson County, Georgia in 1829 when George Washington Cook was born. He later shows up in Carroll County, Georgia where he married his second wife, Anna Holder George, on March 4th, 1846. In 1850 he and Anna are listed in the Carroll County census along with his children of his first wife.

The area of Franklin County, where it is believed that Robert was born covered a larger area at the time of his birth than it does now, so it is possible that information about Robert may be in one of the surrounding counties, including Oconee. Any help on information, or how I might obtain information, about Robert Cook will highly be appreciated.

This is not my Wilbanks line but I collect info on any Wilbanks that I find because my Wilbanks kin seem to have been abducted by aliens sometime after 1880.

Yes, I have info on Tip. I have him on the 1880, 1900 and 1920 census soundexes. Tip was born in September 1872 to Simon and Eliza Wilbanks. Simon was probably born in Jackson County GA. On the 1860 census Simon and his brother and sisters are living with a Jasper WOODS in Jackson County. I do not know the circumstances of this. Perhaps they were orphaned....? I can give you more on brothers and sisters for both Tip and Simon. I would also like to get info from you following this family going forward so I can update my records. I'll check my records more thoroughly to see if I have had contact with others researching this family.

Oconee Co.GA. was formed from Clarke Co. GA. in 1875 so some of your info should be found in Clarke Co. now. On 1860 Clarke Co. GA. census, James O'DILLON age 48 born Ireland, wife Teresa 42 b GA., children Thomas 18, Margaret 16, Susan 12, James 11, John 10, Nancy 9, Josiah 6 all b GA.
On 11 Jan 1870, James O'DILLON md Delilah DAWSON and they are on 1870 Clarke Co. census with the children of Delilah (Eliza BOOTH 17, Robert BOOTH 15 and Beauregard BOOTH 6 all b GA.)
Delilah was md. to Thomas Y. BOOTH 19 Dec 1852 in Clarke Co. and they are listed on 1860 Clarke census with Eliza E. 6, Robert H.5, Levena E.3 and Frances 1/12.(Since Levena and Frances are not listed with Delilah and James we must assume they both died before the 1870 census.) Thomas Y. died in Richmond, VA. in May 1864 during Civil War.
Delilah is listed on 1850 Clarke Co GA. census with her parents John L. and Ruth WOOD and six siblings.
Robert H. BOOTH is my ggrandfather which of course make Delilah and Thomas Y. my gggrandparents.

I have nothing but stories to verify and the only concrete evidence I have at the moment is an 1880 census record for Martha CHERRY, aged 42, a white, widowed woman with several children in her household located in the '240th district' (ED #89, page 22) for Onocee Co., Georgia. I suspect that Martha's maiden name was BOOKER, but cannot be positive since I only have stories to go on. The children mentioned are Earnest, 21, Willie, 17, Emit, 14, Ada, 11, Charley, 5 (he is my ancestor from this line), and Sallie, 2 (who is her granddaughter). If anyone can help me get any further with any facts on this family at all, please write me ASAP. This is the family history of my grandfather who is 81 and wants to know about his family before he dies. Thanks.

I would appreciate any info about the "Klutts" cemetery, especially the location. I believe it is near Union Ch Rd, two miles S. of the church, but I haven't found it. Jacob Klutts was my gggggrandfather. He was taken by Union troops from Watkinsville Aug 2, 1864 and never heard from again. I suppose there are some of the family buried in the Klutts site.

I have been researching the above surnames in Oglethorpe County and, by chance, saw the county seat of Oconee County is Watkinsville. Naturally, I looked up the Watkins surname and found these queries. I have a query of my own. My g-g-g-g-g grandmother's name was Laurany Watkins. She married Sherwood Davis 15 Feb 1797 in Oglethorpe Co GA. However, it is thought that she was married previously, that her maiden name was Campbell and that Watkins was her married name. I have been trying to trace the Watkins and Campbell families from this area of GA. Laurany was born 1770 in NC. It is believed she had two brothers, Charles and Levi Campbell. A Levi Campbell b 1760 married Sarah Watkins, dau. of Reace Watkins. A Keziah Campbell of NC married Moses Watkins, a son of Reace Watkins. I have read and been told that Reace Watkins also had a son named Benjamin b 1760, who died ca 1797 in Oglethorpe Co Ga. I think it is very possible that Benjamin Watkins was Laurany's first husband. I have also been told that Benjamin had at least one son named Laban.

I read your response to a previous query and visited the Barber/Watkins website. There I also discovered that Reace Watkins at one time also lived in Johnston Co NC. Laurany's second husband, Sherwood, was probably born in Johnston Co NC in what was later to be Wake County, and I believe Laurany may have been from the same area.

I apologize for the length of this query; however, I had a lot of information and names to convey which might catch someone's attention that could help me with my research. I would appreciate hearing from anyone that has any information whatsoever about these individuals.

The William McGaughey listed as a son of James and Sarah Palmer McGaughey died July 19, 1830 in Walton Co. so he could not have been in Tenn. James and Sarah also did not die in Oconee Co., they died in and are buried in Walton Co. in the family cemetery. The list of their children is correct.

Benjamin Hampton Lord is buried at High Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery in Walton Co. The Walton Co. Cemetery Book was published in 1981 but this cemetery was cataloged in 1978. There is a Fanny C. Lord listed with only a birth date of 1893, but no Mary Elizabeth Lord. This Fannie Lord is listed in the Social Security Death Index as born 24 Aug. 1893 and died in High Shoals July 1978, probably just after the cemetery was cataloged. There are two other Lord's buried there: Carl F. 1887-1963 and Walter Harry Lord b-June 12, 1902 d-May 18, 1914. There are severial Shelnut's also buried there.

Robert R. McDougald b-25 April, 1845, died 25 Jan. 1905 is buried in the Bogart United Methodest Church Cemetery in Bogart, Oconee Co. Georgia. There is a B.A. McDougald b-1 July, 1883 d-25 Jan. 1905 These are the only two buried there that are marked. I have wondered if he served the CSA but have found no record.

Cyndi, I checked to see if he was a Confederate Soldier as he is the right age. I find no record that he served. He is not on the Broadfoot Roster of 1 1/2 million Confederate Soldiers. He did not make application for a Confederate pension in Georgia. It is possible he was not from here, meaning a Northerner that came here after the war.
You should check the 1900 and earlier census and see if he tells where he and his parents were born. Good luck!

Ola "Sam" Daniell Norris was born . He was the 8th of 10 children (7 male, 3 female) born to Willis Cornelius Norris (1/1/1851 - 4/28/1932) and Jo Anna Victoria "Big" Daniell (10/26/1852 - 10/12/1926) of Oconee County. They are both buried at Mars Hill Baptist Church.

My wife is the Great Grandniece of Ola and Leona Cobb Norris.

There is a dirt road (next to a block building) that you should turn down for .1 mile, then turn right onto another dirt road. The cemetery should be on the left about .4 miles later.
